Trains from Naples to Venice
Trains from Naples to Venice can be divided into two travel time zones, as it were. There are those that take from around 5h, and those that take 10h or more. During off_peak times you’ll also find some trains that take between 6h and 9h. They run from the early hours of the morning, with the last trains leaving from Naples an hour or so before midnight.
Naples to Venice Train Time: Daily Departures
There are about 40 trains from Naples to Venice that you can choose from every day, at a rate of about one every 30min. This gives you around 150 trains per week, running from the early morning to the late evening at this rate, providing very good coverage of the route. The first trains leave at about 05:00 and the last one departs from Naples at roughly 22:45. The frequency and regularity of this schedule is such that you can either book in advance or arrive at the station and catch a train without ever waiting more than about 30min.
How long is the journey by train from Naples to Venice?
The quickest trains from Naples to Venice take between roughly 5h and 5h 40min. These are available at peak times, and leave more frequently then. After that, from about mid_morning till mid_afternoon, the faster trains take around 9h. The other trains, which run concurrently, take around 10h on average, with the longest taking roughly 11h 30min. Just after the evening rush hour you’ll also find a couple of trains that take around 6h to make the journey. Despite the travel time, these are all high_speed trains, as the cities are about 170 miles (275 km) apart.

Departure train station: All trains to Venice from Naples depart from Naples Centrale Station. It’s an extremely modern travel hub and a busy one too, so you’ll find many shops, restaurants and other facilities. The Sala Blu service is available to assist passengers with limited mobility, located right on the platform level. The station is in the city centre itself, or near enough – it will only take you about 3min to get there on the Azienda Napoletana Mobilita N5 or R5 buses. It’s a 1min drive or a 12min walk.
Arrival train station: Most trains from Naples arrive either at Venezia Santa Lucia Station or Venice Mestre Station. To get to the city centre from Santa Lucia you’ll need to go by canal ferry that will take about 20min. From Mestre you can catch an ACTV bus that will take about 11min. Some trains, particularly those later in the day, go to Venezia Carpenedo Station or Venice Porto Marghera Station. From Carpenedo you’re looking at about 20min on one of the RE 170 train lines, to the city centre, with the trip from Porto Marghera taking about 7min, also on RE train lines. Santa Lucia has the most shops, cafés and other amenities, while the others offer small convenience stores and places to get snacks and drinks.
Which train companies travel from Naples to Venice?
Trenitalia operates most of the trains from Naples to Venice, with Italo offering a few trains each day as well. A large number are Trenitalia’s highest_speed trains, the Frecciarosso type. These are the ones to book for the quickest journeys. It also operates the route using a few day_time Intercity and Regionale Veloce train services, and during the latter part of the day you can also catch Trenitalia’s Regionale and Intercity Notte trains. The last mentioned train types are the ones that take around 10h or so to make the trip. Italo trains are also high_speed models, not quite as fast as Frecciarosso, but within at least 30min of their Trenitalia competition. You’ll typically find about four of these trains a day, all of the same type and all taking the same amount of time.
Trenitalia trains from Naples to Venice
Trenitalia is one of Italy’s most prolific high_speed train operators, and offers by far the bulk of trains that travel to Venice from Naples. They mostly use their Frecciarosso trains on this route, which go directly to their destination without any changes in_between. These take around 5h to make the trip. Their Regionale Veloce trains that shoulder most of the remaining trips take longer, depending on the time of day, up to around 10_11h. The carrier also operates night_time trains that travel to some of the smaller stations in Venice. Throughout the day some of these make one change en route. This gives you a very good set of options in terms of exactly which part of Venice you want to be in when you arrive.
Italo trains from Naples to Venice
Italo accounts for most of the high_speed train trips not run by Trenitalia. You’ll find about four per day on the route from Naples to Venice, taking around 5h 25min on average. The carrier only operates one type of train on this route, and they all travel directly from Naples Centrale Station to Venice Santa Lucia or Venice Mestre stations – you won’t have to transfer trains on the way. The first Italo train leaves at around 08:30 and the last at 16:35. They’re spaced at roughly two_hourly intervals.
Train Naples to Venice: Services on Board
On the shorter Trenitalia Frecciarosso train routes you can get drinks and snacks from the bar carriage; longer trips have a catering coach serving meals. On all Trenitalia trains you can book First or Second class, and in both you can use the free on_board Wi_Fi to log on to the Trenitalia FRECCE entertainment portal, where you can watch series and movies, or get the latest news. You can also watch live updates on the progress of your train trip. There is no official luggage limit, but the convention is to take up to two hold luggage items, and one carry_on bag. You’re allowed to bring a small pet in an appropriate container, and either a foldable bicycle or one that you’ve disassembled and bagged. Italo limits luggage to two hold items and a lap bag, and you can only bring bicycles in bags of a set size. A single pet weighing up to about 11 lb (5kg) can accompany you in a travel container. There is one class, but you can choose to have a Smart, Comfort, Prima or Club Executive services.
Night trains Venice
Trenitalia Intercity Notte trains serve this route at night, with changes to other types of trains on the way. These are two_stop trips, via Rome and Verona, via Pisa and Florence, or via Salerno and Rome. The fastest of these takes just over 10h 45min, with the longest journey taking about 11h 40min.
Travelling by train: Sustainable journey
Trenitalia and Italo have sustainability policies throughout their operations. Italo focuses on using as many recycled materials as possible when building its trains, reaching 90% recycled material content. Its trains emit around 31 lb (14 kg) of carbon, which is about five times less than a car. Trenitalia trains use recycled materials to achieve around 30% in energy savings. They also have KERS systems on their engines, harvesting heat from its brakes and converting it into electrical energy to send back to the grid.
How to find cheap train tickets from Naples to Venice?
You’ll typically be able to find cheaper train tickets to Venice from Naples by booking the longer trips, or the ones that make the most changes in_between. The compensation for the longer travel time is that the prices are often cheaper. You can also book your tickets a long time in advance – months if possible. Use the Omio timetables to get alerts when new tickets become available so that you can get the benefit of early_bird prices. Conversely, if you stay really flexible about when you travel, you can often get last_minute deals on tickets due to previously booked passengers cancelling their tickets.
