• Mizuho & Nozomi: The Mizuho Osaka Hiroshima and Nozomi Osaka Hiroshima trains are the absolute fastest options available, making the fewest stops and completing the journey in roughly 1 hour and 25 minutes.
• Sakura: The Sakura Shinkansen Osaka Hiroshima service is the perfect middle ground. It takes only slightly longer than the Nozomi but is highly recommended for UK tourists, as it is fully covered by the JR Pass.
• Kodama: The Kodama is the slowest option, stopping at every single regional station along the route.

Boarding, Seats & Luggage

Unlike travelling out of Tokyo Station, the major bullet train departure point in Osaka is located slightly outside the city centre. When taking the Shin Osaka to Hiroshima train, remember that all Shinkansen services depart exclusively from Shin-Osaka Station.

If you are starting your journey in central Osaka, you cannot take an Osaka Station to Hiroshima bullet train directly. You must first take a quick 4-minute local JR train transfer from Osaka Station (Umeda) up to Shin-Osaka.

Seats and Luggage Rules

When booking, you can choose between ordinary non-reserved seats, ordinary reserved seats, and the spacious Green Car (first class).

You must also be aware of the Osaka Hiroshima Shinkansen luggage policies. If you are travelling with large suitcases, any bag with total dimensions (height + width + depth) between 161 cm and 250 cm requires a dedicated oversized luggage Shinkansen reservation. If you board without booking this specific baggage space, you will incur a penalty fee on board.

Arriving at Hiroshima Station & Day Trips

When arriving at the bustling terminal, onward travel is brilliant. Getting from Hiroshima Station to Peace Memorial Park is incredibly easy; you can hop on the historic local tram (streetcar) network or take the local sightseeing bus from just outside the exit. If you are planning to visit the famous floating torii gate, the journey from Hiroshima Station to Miyajima involves a quick local JR train to Miyajimaguchi Station, followed by a brief 10-minute passenger ferry.

Day Trip or Overnight?

For many UK tourists, the big question is whether to do an Osaka to Hiroshima day trip or stay overnight. Because the bullet train is so fast, a day trip is entirely possible if you leave early. However, catching the Osaka to Miyajima train, taking the ferry, exploring the island, and then returning to the city for the Peace Memorial Park makes for a very long and exhausting day. To truly appreciate the history and scenery without rushing, an overnight stay in Hiroshima is highly recommended!
