Bus Travel in Italy

Italy is dotted with cities renowned for architectural beauty, vast historical centres and fascinating monuments. The Italian coach network has developed into a simple and reliable way to travel between many of Italy’s main urban regions and centres. Within cities, suburban areas rely heavily on public transport, in some cases enhanced by private operators, and integrated with trams, trolley buses and electric vehicles. Greater development of long-distance and suburban transport has meant bus options now provide travellers in Italy great options and reasonable prices to allow it to better compete with the train network.

Popular Bus Journeys in Italy

There are numerous long-distance connections to Italy's main cities which can be combined with regional, express and overnight buses that also often connect to rail services. Regions and major cities are all interconnected efficiently. Major cities such as Rome, Milan, Turin, Florence and Naples offer frequent and reasonably priced bus services. There are also some beautiful bus journeys to be made through Italy's more mountainous areas.

The main bus providers in Italy include Ibus, which is an alliance of 9 operators (Baltour, Bus Consortium, Di Fonzo, Satam The Group Overview, Intersaj, Bus Marino, Rome Marche Lines, and Autoservizi Salemi Sulga) and Italybus which offers national, international and long-distance connections. The company Motorway is also a popular provider and connects the centre of Milan and Turin with Milan Malpensa, Linate, Orio al Serio and the mountain and beach resorts in the northeast. Interbus and Saj also operate frequent connections between Sicily and Calabria.

BusCenter's head office is located in Palermo and offers bus routes throughout Italy and abroad. Buscenter also offers a regional transport service in Sicily, with transport to and from the airports of Trapani and Palermo, making it possible to reach Puglia or Northern Italy from the island.

FlixBus: FlixBus is the primary bus company in Germany and is now rapidly expanding its coverage throughout Europe. FlixBus operates routes to dozens of cities in Italy including Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice, Pisa, Turin, Naples and Palermo.

Onboard Facilities and Services

Italy's bus transport is divided into city buses, intra-urban, suburban (covering the connections between regions) and long-distance coach services used mainly for links to tourist destinations. City buses are used mostly for transit and have limited facilities outside the standard ones such as wheelchair accessibility and the capacity to carry small to average amounts of luggage. When travelling with suburban or regional services, you can usually expect the buses to provide air conditioning, Wi-Fi, TV entertainment, toilets, discounts for children and seniors as per the provider, bicycles and large luggage transport, as well as the possibility of bringing pets.
