Kyoto to Hiroshima by Shinkansen

When heading west to explore the rich history of Japan, taking the Kyoto to Hiroshima Shinkansen is an incredibly popular and deeply scenic route. This journey operates along the seamless Tokaido-Sanyo line, directly connecting the ancient cultural capital with the vibrant coastal hub. Taking the Kyoto to Hiroshima bullet train is undoubtedly the fastest and most efficient way to travel between these two magnificent destinations.

Whether you want to ride the world-class Shinkansen or prefer to save money with overnight road travel, booking your trains in Japan is wonderfully straightforward with Omio.

Book your Kyoto ↔ Hiroshima journey:

Nozomi, Hikari or Transfer?

When booking your tickets, you will have several high-speed options. Here is what you need to know about navigating the timetables:

  • Nozomi: The Nozomi Kyoto Hiroshima service is the absolute fastest and most frequent option, completing the journey in roughly 1 hour and 40 minutes.
  • Hikari: The Hikari Kyoto Hiroshima service is a fantastic alternative that makes a few more stops. Crucially, it is fully covered by the JR Pass without requiring any extra supplement fees!

Direct Train or Change at Shin-Osaka?

Booking a Kyoto to Hiroshima direct train is always the easiest option. However, direct Hikari trains on this specific route can sometimes be infrequent. If you are travelling with a Japan Rail Pass, it is often much faster to travel from Kyoto to Hiroshima via Shin Osaka. You simply catch a quick train down to Shin-Osaka Station, then immediately transfer onto a frequent Sakura bullet train heading west. If you are looking for the absolute best Kyoto Hiroshima JR Pass train route, this quick transfer method is highly recommended!

Unsure if a rail pass is right for your holiday? Use our JR Pass Calculator to see how much you could save!

Seats and Luggage

When securing your tickets, you can choose between ordinary non-reserved seats, ordinary reserved seats, and the highly spacious Green Car (first class) for extra legroom.

You must also adhere to the strict Kyoto Hiroshima Shinkansen luggage policies. If you are travelling with large suitcases, any bag with total dimensions (height + width + depth) between 161 cm and 250 cm absolutely requires a dedicated oversized luggage Shinkansen reservation. If you board the bullet train without pre-booking this specific baggage space, you will face a penalty fee from the conductor.

Arriving in Hiroshima & Day Trips

Arriving at the main station places you perfectly in the city centre. Onward travel from Hiroshima Station to Peace Memorial Park is incredibly easy; simply jump on the historic local tram (streetcar) network right outside the exit.

For many UK tourists, the big question is whether to plan a Kyoto to Hiroshima day trip or stay overnight. Because the trains are so fast, a day trip is completely viable. However, if you are also catching a Kyoto to Miyajima train connection to see the famous floating shrine, attempting a combined Kyoto to Miyajima day trip and Peace Park tour in a single afternoon is exceptionally exhausting. Staying overnight is highly recommended to truly appreciate the region!

The Floating Torii Gate

A short journey from the city centre brings you to the enchanting island of Miyajima. Famous for the magnificent Itsukushima Shrine and its iconic red torii gate, which appears to float majestically on the water during high tide. It is an unmissable destination for British holidaymakers wanting to experience authentic Japanese heritage, offering breathtaking coastal scenery and incredibly friendly local deer that roam freely among the ancient temple grounds.

Sunset Over the Bay

If you are enjoying an extended stay rather than rushing back to Kyoto on the last bullet train, taking a late afternoon ferry across the bay is highly recommended. Watching the sunset cast a brilliant golden hue over the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding mountainous islands is a truly unforgettable coastal experience. The passenger ferries provide exceptional vantage points to capture the perfect holiday photographs as dusk settles over the water.

Top Tips for Travelling Kyoto to Hiroshima

Yes, absolutely. The route is serviced by the high-speed Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen, directly connecting Kyoto Station with Hiroshima Station.

The Nozomi is the absolute fastest and most frequent service. However, the Hikari is highly recommended for tourists using a Japan Rail Pass, as it is fully covered without any extra supplement fees.

While direct trains are easier, transferring at Shin-Osaka is often the best strategy for JR Pass holders, as it gives you immediate access to the frequent Sakura trains heading west.

You only need to reserve a dedicated baggage seat if your suitcase’s total dimensions (height + width + depth) measure between 161 cm and 250 cm. Standard cabin bags do not require a reservation.

While the Shinkansen makes a day trip to Hiroshima possible, attempting to visit both the Peace Park and Miyajima Island in one day from Kyoto is very exhausting. An overnight stay is highly recommended.
