What Makes Frecciarossa Trains Special?

Frecciarossa trains are high-speed trains that travel throughout Italy and connect the major cities including Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and Naples. These trains travel up to 186 mph (300 km/h) and are one of the fastest ways to get around. Frecciarossa trains offer 200 connections daily and are ultra modern with a wide range of on board facilities, including in-seat dining, a bistro carriage and premium business services. In 2021, Frecciarossa extended its network to France and now travels from Milan and Turin to Lyon and Paris. There are two types of Frecciarossa trains: the original Frecciarossa 500 and the next-generation Frecciarossa 1000.

Frecciarossa Trains: Daily Departures

Frecciarossa trains operate daily from morning to evening, transporting passengers from the north to the south of Italy. There are four major routes:

  • Approximately 115 trains depart every day along the route from Turin to Salerno. These trains stop in Milan, Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples.
  • The Venice to Salerno route stops in Padua, Florence, Rome and Naples. There are around 26 trains per day.
  • Around 48 trains per day travel from Trieste to Turin, stopping in Udine, Venice, Padua, Verona, Brescia and Milan.
  • Around 6 trains per day operate along the Turin/Milan to Lecce route, stopping in Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Rimini, Ancona, Pescara, Foggia and Bari.
  • Frecciarossa trains also travel from Rome Termini to Rome Fiumicino Airport, with around 4 trains per day.

Frecciarossa: Type of Tickets

When you are selecting you fare with Frecciarossa, you can choose from three types of tickets:

  • Super Economy fares: Super Economy tickets are usually the cheapest but cannot be refunded or exchanged.
  • Economy fares: Economy tickets are non-refundable but can be exchanged before your departure once for a different train time. Passengers may be charged the price difference if applicable.
  • Base fares: Base tickets can be refunded for a 20% fee before departure and are fully exchangeable.

Passengers can opt for the Omio Refund Guarantee. This allows you to to get a refund on 85% of the ticket price if you cancel your ticket up to 24 hours before departure.

Frecciarossa Trains: Types of Classes

Passengers travelling on Frecciarossa trains can choose from four different classes:

  • Frecciarossa Standard: Passengers are seated in comfortable armchairs and can take advantage of free Wi-Fi on board. Power plugs are available if you need to charge your device.
  • Frecciarossa Premium: Premium class passengers enjoy leather seats and are welcomed on board with a drink and snack on arrival, as well as a complimentary newspaper. In-seat catering is available.
  • Frecciarossa Business: Business class passengers are seated in wide leather seats that recline. Dividers offer extra privacy, and there is plenty of space for luggage. Business passengers who don’t wish to be interrupted can stay in the Silent Area.
  • Frecciarossa Executive: If you choose an Executive class ticket with Frecciarossa, you will travel in total comfort. Rotating champagne-coloured leather seats recline completely, with extra legroom and a footrest so you can stretch out. Passengers will also have access to the FRECCIAClub at the station before departing.

Frecciarossa trains offer comfortable long-distance transport and high-speed connections between cities in Italy. You can travel from Milan in the north of Italy to Reggio di Calabria in the country's south in less than 10 hours. Some of the most popular routes include Rome to Milan and Rome to Florence. Note that prices will vary depending on the departure time and when you book. Check Omio in advance to get better deals for your preferred travel time.

The Frecciarossa connection from Rome to Florence is one of the most popular routes.

Passengers travelling around Italy on Frecciarossa trains can choose Standard, Premium, Business or Executive class tickets.

  • You can choose your seat when you book, whether you prefer to sit by the aisle or window.
  • There is no luggage limit for passengers travelling on Frecciarossa trains.
  • All Frecciarossa trains have a bistro carriage so you can drink and dine on board.
  • Passengers with Premium, Business or Executive class tickets will receive a welcome drink and catering on board. Executive Class tickets include a selection of DOC/DOCG wines, craft beers, cocktails and dishes prepared with local ingredients; Business and First Class tickets include a box of fresh food, coffee, and bottled water; Premium Class tickets include snacks and bottled water.
  • For passengers with limited mobility, Frecciarossa trains have accessible toilets and offer wheelchair spaces in dedicated carriages.
  • Small pets in carriers are permitted on Frecciarossa trains. If you are travelling with a larger dog, you will need to purchase a ticket for it and make sure it is always on a leash.
  • You can bring one bicycle on board, but make sure it is disassembled and can fit in the luggage racks in each carriage.

Fast Frecciarossa trains usually travel during the day from early in the morning to late in the evening. If you wish to take a night train in Italy, Intercity Notte and Frecciargento trains offer this service, including services from Palermo to Rome and Milan to Reggio de Calabria.

All Frecciarossa train tickets purchased on Omio are mobile tickets, so you don’t need to print anything. Simply show your mobile ticket to the conductor on the train.

3. Can I cancel my train ticket?

If you have purchased a Base fare, you can refund your ticket for a 20% fee before your train departs. Super Economy and Economy tickets are non-refundable.

4. Can I exchange my train ticket?

Economy and Base fares can be exchanged before your departure time, but you can't exchange Super Economy tickets.

5. How many pieces/kilos of luggage can I take on the train?

There are no luggage limits on Frecciarossa trains. You can store your bags in the overhead luggage racks or under your seat, and there are usually luggage racks at the end of each carriage for larger suitcases.

6. What are the services available for people with reduced mobility?

Passengers with restricted mobility should reserve wheelchair spaces 24 hours in advance and arrive at the Sala Blu 30 minutes before your train is scheduled to depart. Travellers in wheelchairs can use a motorised lift to get from the platform to the train.

7. Are the trains adapted to persons with restricted mobility?

Frecciarossa trains feature accessible seats and toilets for people with restricted mobility. These carriages are marked clearly, and there are companion seats alongside the spaces for wheelchairs. People in wheelchairs can also access the bistro carriage on Frecciarossa trains.

8. Can children under 18 travel by themselves?

Children under 14 years old are not permitted to travel unaccompanied on Frecciarossa trains.

9. Can I buy food and drinks on board?

Frecciarossa trains usually have a bistro carriage where passengers can purchase a drink or snack. In-seat catering is also available for Premium, Business and Executive passengers.

10. Is there any entertainment on board?

Passengers on Frecciarossa trains can access the complimentary FRECCE Portal, which offers a selection of films, TV shows, music and news to keep you entertained on your train journey.

11. Are pets allowed on Frecciarossa trains?

Small dogs and cats in a pet carrier can travel with you free of charge. Larger dogs are also permitted, but you must purchase a ticket for them, and they must be kept on a leash and fitted with a muzzle.
Each passenger is allowed to bring one bicycle on board which is disassembled and contained in a bag that does not exceed 80 x 110 x 40 cm.
