I travelled to Copenhagen with my mother for a short holiday. We opted for the train as it was shorter than flying, with all the trimmings, and above all it was more environmentally friendly. The best thing was the friendly staff, but unfortunately the train was very full. We travelled in the morning so that we were in Copenhagen in the afternoon. We paid €107 for the return journey, which is definitely a reasonable price!

A weekend trip with my girlfriend took us to Copenhagen. I came from Hamburg, she from BaWü. For For me, travelling by train was very convenient, from central station to central station with just one means of transport and at no extra cost other than the train ticket.

I would highly recommend the train journey because, above all, the train left on time and arrived on time. In addition, there was a waitress on the train who offered food to the passengers. The train was very clean overall. The toilets also looked freshly cleaned. Unfortunately, the train had a lack of facilities, such as no wifi and no fold-out tables.

When I got in, I could first charge my mobile phone and throw away my rubbish. Then I could go to the toilet, and I was surprised how clean it all was. The service was friendly and offered me a drink. There was wifi on the train. I was also able to sleep in peace because of the reasonable volume. There was also no need to change trains and the price-quality ratio was perfect.

I travelled from Hamburg central station to Copenhagen. The train journey itself was very relaxed. The service was very, very good and the staff were very helpful! Unfortunately, the facilities were not very good, the wifi didn't really work most of the time and the toilets were also not usable due to renovations.

Some time ago I took the ICE from Hamburg main station to Copenhagen. I was pleasantly surprised by the staff, who were all very friendly and helpful... The price was also convincing. This was a very pleasant train journey, although the train was late, the journey was very enjoyable. The staff were very friendly. The seats were also very comfortable, which made the ride that much more enjoyable. I recommend this ride to others.

The train ride was good and I had wifi and a power socket. The seats were very comfortable and the volume was pleasant. I didn't have any food, but the service was very friendly. I could reserve a seat and was given information about the journey beforehand. The toilets were very dirty and it almost made me throw up. I didn't have to change trains and the train was on time. But the price-quality ratio is good.

The journey from Hamburg to Copenhagen was really very pleasant and can be recommended. The train left on time at 7.25am and arrived at around 12.30pm. During the journey I used the toilet, which was very clean and had plenty of toilet paper. The train also had a large compartment for my luggage, which was also very helpful. The only problem, which wasn't dramatic, is that the train staff only appeared twice, so I couldn't ask for help.

IconLong journey
IconNot getting as much sleep
I reserved my seat in advance. When the train finally arrived, I was escorted straight to my seat as I boarded. The seats were relaxed and clean, which I really enjoyed. The toilet was also quite clean, which was good because nobody wants to do their business in a dirty toilet. The service was really nice and also asked me questions. It was very quiet and yet I didn't get too much sleep. I didn't have to change trains, which was good. In the end, the journey was fine and only 5 minutes late, but I'm not going to make an issue of that.

Sylt Shuttle Plus

About
Sylt Shuttle Plus was a unique passenger train service operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB) that connected Niebüll and Westerland on the island of Sylt, Germany. Unlike the primary Sylt Shuttle, which transports vehicles, the \Plus\" service was designed for passengers without cars. It involved coupling a Class 628 diesel multiple unit to the rear of the car shuttle train. Introduced in 2015, the Sylt Shuttle Plus gained notoriety for its often-empty carriages and longer travel times compared to regional trains, leading to its nickname \"ghost train.\" The service was discontinued in December 2024."

Traveling from Hamburg to Copenhagen by Train

Introduction

On a trip from London to Finland without flying, taking the train from Hamburg to Copenhagen was an essential part of my route. It’s an easy way to cover a lot of kilometers, and both day and night trains are available, with stops at intermediate stations along the way.

Route Overview

When traveling from Hamburg to Copenhagen by train, you’ll begin at Hamburg Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) and finish at Copenhagen Central Station, taking around 4 hours and 35 minutes. Passing through northern Germany and the state of Schleswig-Holstein, it reaches the Danish border before crossing Jutland and entering the island of Zealand, where Copenhagen is located.

While buses and flights are available, I think the comfort, speed, and cost make the train the best way to get from Hamburg to Copenhagen.

Transportation Experience

It’s easy to book your Hamburg to Copenhagen train journey on Omio. Just compare schedules and fares, make a secure payment, and get your ticket by email or access it via the app.

Omio also lets you look at other forms of transport. The Hamburg to Copenhagen bus is cheaper, but it takes up to 7 hours and isn’t quite as comfy as the train!

Can I fly from Hamburg to Copenhagen?

Yes, there are a few flights from Hamburg to Copenhagen, taking just 55 minutes. However, they’re often expensive and aimed at business travelers. As the ground distance is small, most people opt for the train or bus.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

You’ll depart from Hamburg Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), which is about a kilometer from Hamburg’s historic town hall (Rathaus). This is a huge station with many entrances and exits, so make sure you arrive with plenty of time! There are dozens of eateries, although prices are higher than in the city. I didn’t have to show my ticket until I boarded the train.

Street view of Hamburg's historic town hall Rathaus

Upon arrival, Copenhagen Central Station is right in the heart of the city, across the road from Tivoli Park. There are plenty of amenities at the station and restaurants nearby.

Schedule & Frequency

There are around eight direct trains per day between Hamburg and Copenhagen. I took the second of the day, which departed at 8:50 am. The first train leaves around 7:00 am and the last around 7:00 pm.

There is also a Hamburg to Copenhagen night train, a section of the Berlin to Stockholm service, which leaves at 11:59 pm and arrives at 6:29 am. I once took this from Berlin to Malmo in Sweden and loved it!

Onboard Experience & Services

I traveled in Standard Class and was really impressed with the comfortable and spacious seats. I only had a small backpack, but Deutsche Bahn allows one large suitcase per passenger. Wi-Fi worked fairly well, although it was intermittent in rural areas. There was no restaurant car, but I had already stocked up at Hamburg Station in advance. The restrooms were slightly dated, but they were kept clean throughout the journey.

An interesting place to break up your journey is Schleswig, which I’ve visited before. This town spans a fjord called the Schlei and has Viking ruins and a striking cathedral.

As this is a long-distance train crossing two countries, it’s worth booking in advance. Here’s what I spent:

Budget breakdown:

  • Seat reservation: €6.30
  • Pastry at Hamburg Station: €3.50
  • Meal at Wagamama in Copenhagen: 179 DKK (approx. €24)

Top Tips & Personal Recommendations

  • Have your passport ready: Border checks are common when entering Denmark by train.
  • Bring food: Restaurant cars are often unavailable on this route.
  • Make a stop: Places like Schleswig make great cultural breaks.
  • Use your euros before boarding: Denmark (and Sweden) don’t use the euro, but cards are widely accepted.

Conclusion

The train is undoubtedly the easiest and most comfortable way to travel between Hamburg and Copenhagen. With spacious seating, scenic views, and a stress-free journey, it’s the perfect choice, and booking through the Omio app or website makes it even easier.
