Scotrail Routes
Scotrail provides services throughout Northern England to areas such as Newcastle and Carlisle, as well as London. The vast majority of services are between major Scottish cities, such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen. Glasgow Central Station and Edinburgh Waverley are the two main rail hubs on the Scottish rail network, with 50 million passengers passing through their ticket barriers collectively each year.
Scotrail Stations and Destinations
ScotRail operates trains along the Highland Main Line, which is renowned for the scenic views of the Scottish Highlands. A Caledonian sleeper train running overnight also takes passengers from Scotland to London’s Euston Station.
Established under the brand Scotrail by National Express in 1997, the company was transferred to First in 2004 at which point it was redubbed First Scotrail. In 2008, in attempts to rebrand, the company returned to the original name, Scotrail.
Scotrail Trains Ticket Types
Scotrail offers quite a large array of tickets such as Advance tickets, Group tickets known as Friend’s Fare, Anytime tickets which offer full flexibility regarding timing, Family tickets for your family travel needs, as well as off-peak tickets.
- Passengers may elect to travel in Standard or in First Class where they can enjoy extra legroom, access to power sockets for computers and other electronic devices as well as complimentary drinks and various refreshments on board. Standard Class offers a comfortable and relaxing ride to your destination.
- All types of National Rail Railcards are still applicable on rail services in Scotland, meaning that card holders are still entitled to one third off rail travel north of the border. Scotrail Accessibility
Scotrail offers assistance to disabled customers and those with reduced mobility; just ensure to book this at least 3 hours before your train departs. If you are travelling with different providers, then make sure you inform us 24 hours' in advance. Call +44 800 912 2901.
Scotrail Luggage
You can bring up to 2 pieces of luggage for free. Take a suitcase or backpack plus on item of hand luggage. You can bring prams and carrycots with you, so pick a carriage with the most space. There is space for wheelchairs on most trains.
Scotrail Wifi and Services
Scotrail trains currently have 90% of the fleet with free Wifi enabled. WiFi is available that over 50 stations, which will increase by 4 stations this season. WiFi strength can vary from route or station, but 4G is used wherever possible. It may mean that limited access is given when traveling on certain routes.
Scotrail Travelling with pets
Passengers are normally allowed to take pets with them on journeys, provided they are kept on a lead or in a cage. Small animals which are permitted on the train include cats, dogs, and other small animals (maximum 2 per person). They must not cause inconvenience or stress to other passengers, nor occupy any seats.
Scotrail Lost and Found
Should you lose any luggage or items of clothing or coats, report where and when you think you lost the item on the Scotrail website. Their customer service will contact you if they retrieve it, or if it in handed in. Similarly, if you find anything on a train or at the station then hand it in to train station staff. Remember to keep clear of unattended luggage and inform a member of staff right away. Contact the lost property team on +44 141 335 3276.
Scotrail Bicycles
Fortunately, you can take your bike on Scotrail trains free of charge; be sure to book in advance to make sure you get a space. If it's not possible to reserve a spot, then make sure to arrive promptly as they operate on a 'first come, first served' basis. Remember that commuter trains will have very limited space, so avoid traveling at peak times if you want to make sure you can take your bike. Scotrail Cancellations and Modifications
Scotrail has a £10 fee for amending or refunding Advance tickets. You cannot refund Advance tickets but they can be amended for a fee. Contact Omio on the cancellations page. to amend your ticket.
Scotrail Transport of minors
Although there is no minimum age a minor can travel, it's essential that children are aware of the risks of train travel. It is up to the parents to decide if the child is fit to travel. If a member of staff is worried about a child travelling on their own, they may inform the British Transport Police to ensure their safety.
Scotrail Refunds
If your train is delayed by 30 minutes or more, then you may be eligible for a refund. Make sure to claim within 28 days. Some tickets may allow you to apply for a refund, if you haven't used them yet, if the train is heavily delayed and cancelled. Under certain circumstances, some cheaper tickets may be non-refundable - such as if it is an Advanced ticket. For your claim to be considered, be sure to apply for a refund within 28 days of the ticket's expiry date. Make sure you check the terms and conditions of the ticket before you buy.
