Antwerp

Antwerp has a long and and glorious history. At one time, it was one of Europe's largest cities and its preeminent port. Nowadays, the port is less important, but the beautiful architecture of the city's golden age remains. Attractions include the home of seventeenth century painter Peter Paul Reubens, wonderful churches like the Pauluskerk, and the medieval architecture of the market square. Learn about Antwerp's history as the world's diamond-cutting centre and see the window displays of countless jewellers in the Diamond District. There is a superb Fine Arts Museum in the southern part of the city and De Singel - one of Europe's leading venues for music, dance and theatre. Belgium is also famous for its delicacies, from meat and cheese to gourmet chocolates. If food is your passion, don't miss the weekend markets at Theaterplein Square, which is also a great place to find holiday gifts.
