Traveling from Granada to Seville by Train

Introduction

As someone who’s been exploring Spain for a while, I’ve learned that the best way to get between cities, especially in the south, is by train. On my recent trip, I took the train from Granada to Seville, and it was not only efficient but also genuinely relaxing. I booked everything in advance through Omio, which made the whole process smoother than I expected. If you’re planning your own Andalusian getaway, I’d say this route is a must.

View of Seville Cathedral from up close

Route Overview

The Granada to Seville train connects two of southern Spain’s most iconic cities in just under 2.5 hours. Covering around 250 kilometers, the route is serviced by Renfe, Spain’s national rail operator. If you’re wondering about the best way to get from Granada to Seville, train travel stands out for its comfort and scenic views. I loved skipping the stress of airport transfers and simply showing up at the city center station.

Transportation Experience

I booked my train ticket through Omio a few days before departure. It was super easy to compare departure times and prices, and I liked having all my travel info in one place.

The station in Granada was quiet and easy to get around, and once I boarded, I found myself a comfy seat and settled in for the ride. If you're deciding between taking a train or the bus from Granada to Seville, I’d say the train wins its speed and overall experience.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

My journey began at Estación de Tren de Granada, located not far from the historic center. I arrived early enough to grab a café con leche before boarding.

Trains arrive at Seville Santa Justa Station, which is conveniently located close to the city center.

Both of the stations are well-signed and easy to move through, even if it’s your first time traveling in Spain.

Schedule & Frequency

There are several daily departures from Granada to Seville, including morning and afternoon options. I chose a mid-morning train around 10:30 AM, which ended up being a sweet spot, meaning not too early but early enough to enjoy lunch in Seville after arriving.

The journey time was just over two hours, and we arrived right on time. Trains on this route tend to be punctual and reliable, but I still recommend checking the schedule on Omio the night before.

Onboard Experience & Services

I rode second class with Renfe, and the experience was comfortable from start to finish. The carriage was clean, with plenty of legroom, large windows, and power outlets at each seat. While there wasn’t Wi-Fi, I had podcasts downloaded in advance. For entertainment, I enjoyed watching the views change from olive groves and open plains to small, white villages. There were also clean restrooms on board and plenty of space for luggage.

On Renfe trains from Granada to Seville, you can usually bring up to three pieces of luggage (total weight under 25kg). Prams and strollers can be carried for free if folded, but none of your bags should be over 85x55x35 cm.

Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown

I booked about a week in advance on Omio and paid €29 for my Second Class ticket. Prices can be lower if you book earlier, so it’s worth checking a few days ahead.

Tickets are available digitally, so you can just show the QR code on your phone at boarding.

Here’s a quick breakdown of my total spend:

Item Cost (EUR)
Renfe train ticket €29.00
Coffee and snack at Granada Station €4.50
Taxi from Seville Santa Justa to hotel €8.00
Total €41.50

Top Tips & Personal Recommendations

  • Get to the station 30 minutes early: This gives you just enough time to find your platform and settle in without feeling rushed.
  • Bring snacks: Since there’s no café car on this route, packing a small picnic is a good idea.
  • Download entertainment: There's no onboard Wi-Fi, so you'll have lots of time to catch up on reading or music.
  • Choose a window seat: Sitting on the left side provides some of the best countryside views along the journey.
  • Travel light: Although both stations are easy to navigate, having a smaller bag makes moving around even simpler.

Scenic Touches to Remember

One of the things I always enjoy about train travel in Spain is how much of the landscape you actually get to see. On this journey, I watched as we passed rolling hills, sunbaked fields, and clusters of olive trees that seemed to go on forever. There’s something so peaceful about moving through these little pockets of Andalusia. It felt more like a moving postcard than a train ride.

Conclusion

If you’re planning a trip through southern Spain, the train from Granada to Seville is a smart and enjoyable way to get there. The ride is straightforward, the landscapes shift beautifully along the way, and booking through Omio makes it all incredibly easy. For me, it felt less like a transfer and more like a meaningful part of the trip.
