With its beautiful and alluring medieval atmosphere, the city center of Bergamo is home to about 200,000 residents, and its wealth of rare picturesque sceneries makes it perfect for relaxing strolls. At the Piazza Duomo, you will see the city cathedral, the Duomo di Bergamo, and the famous Romanesque Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. At the Piazza Vecchia, you will see incredible medieval renaissance architecture and the attractive white marble Contarini fountain directly in the center. Enjoy your lunch while taking in panoramic views of the tall Civic Tower, commonly known as the "big bell," across the street. The famous landmark comes with a large bell that tolls 180 times to signify the old curfew. Walk towards the city center to check out the Town Hall, which has an outstanding marble facade and is home to the Civic Library. You can't miss The Baptistery, which was built in 1340. There, you will see incredible statues that date back to the 14th century and impressive marble bas-reliefs that showcase stories from the life of Jesus Christ.
