Trains from Sheffield to York are operated by Cross Country, Northern Rail and Virgin Trains East Coast. A regular service operates seven days a week, starting at around 6:30 a.m. There are up to ten trains an hour until about 10:00 p.m., then later departures have a longer journey time. Two departures an hour are direct taking approximately 1 hour. The rest involve a connection at Doncaster and take slightly longer.

Taking the Train from Sheffield

Trains from Sheffield to York depart from Sheffield Station, located just a short distance from the city centre. Regular transport links between the station and the town, as well as the airport, the Meadowhall Shopping Centre and the Dom Valley Arena, are operated by Stagecoach Supertrams. Local buses, run by First Group and Stagecoach, also depart from the city bus station, which is close to the train station. A taxi rank is located outside the station.

Getting into York by Train

York is an ancient city that dates back to pre-Roman times and still retains much evidence of its past for visitors to admire. A walk on the city's medieval walls, sitting on Roman foundations, provides some of the city's best views. The town centre is dominated by its Gothic Cathedral while lively reconstructions at the fascinating Jorvik Centre take visitors on a walk through Viking era streets. Trains from Sheffield to York arrive at York Station, adjacent to the National Railway Museum and within walking distance of York's pedestrianised centre and historic attractions. First Bus, Arriva and other providers operate frequent bus services around the town and out to surrounding areas. Taxis are available at the station.
