My journey from Prague to Budapest was very enjoyable. The price-performance ratio was very good and ideal. The price was fair for the long distance in my opinion. I found the reservation options to be simple and clear. The volume on the train was also optimal and appropriate. The seats on the train were very comfortable and cosy. However, not enough attention was paid to hygiene, as the toilets were not well-maintained, hygienic and clean. In addition, the train did not arrive in Budapest on time. The staff was not friendly to the guests and offered only a poor service to their guests. Overall a satisfactory journey, because hygiene and the service of the staff are important aspects for me.

My journey from Paris to Budapest turned out to be excellent. Firstly, I thought the price was reasonable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They always had a big smile on their faces and were ready to help and assist their guests. Maximum attention was paid to hygiene, as the toilets and seats were well maintained and clean. The seats were not only clean, but also very cosy. This made the journey much more relaxing. However, the noise on the train was annoying and the train did not arrive in Budapest on time. There were also several changes that made the journey more time-consuming. But all in all a great journey!

In addition, the reservation options were relatively straightforward, which made booking tickets much easier. However, I found the price a little high and the seats were unfortunately not well maintained and comfortable. In addition, the volume was not appropriate. What struck me immediately was definitely the super fast reception and the wifi. Following on from this, I would like to say that the cleaning staff did an excellent job. This ensured that the conditions were hygienic. It was warm and cosy on the train, which benefits the comfort of the train. I have nothing negative to say about the staff, but nothing positive either. To cut a long story short. Recommendation.

Our train, the EN 40457, departed at 00:40. Although the time was not ideal, I reached my destination at 8.30am after a journey of 7 hours and 50 minutes. It was a direct journey, without changing trains, and delays were rare. The comfort was excellent: The ergonomic seats and tables allowed me to watch films on my laptop. There were also power sockets and wifi on the train. The staff were helpful and assisted me in connecting to the wifi. The train was clean and well maintained, apart from the slightly dirty toilets. I would recommend this journey to anyone, especially those with little experience of travelling by train. The price was reasonable for the quality on offer.

I travelled to Budapest-Deli on the RJ 1031. As I'd never been there before and didn't know the route, I was really excited to see what it would be like. The journey took almost 7 hours, but every passenger got a snack that they didn't have to pay for, which I thought was really great. The service was also very friendly and spoke good English. The hygiene was great and the wifi also worked well.

It could have been a perfect journey as the train was on time, I didn't have to change trains and there was plenty of room for me and my luggage. Unfortunately, one of the passengers in my compartment was snoring very loudly, which was very annoying. As the train was otherwise quite quiet, I could have slept, but I made use of the wifi and continued watching my series. In general, I can say that it was a good journey that I can recommend without hesitation.

I travelled on 23/06/2024 with the EC279 at 11:44 from Prague to Budapest by train. We arrived there at 18:28. The staff was very friendly, but I'm still not satisfied with the journey. I had to pay a lot of money for the journey and yet an old train set was used. This meant that there was no wifi and it was very noisy on the train. The journey also took a long time. I quickly got bored. Next time I'd rather travel by car or fly by plane!!!

I travelled from Prague to Budapest on the RegioJet RJ 1033. It was a journey without any changes and the train left Prague on time at 9.15am and also arrived in Budapest on time at 3.58pm. The train was also equipped with power sockets so that you could charge your mobile phone at any time, and the wifi was also good as I didn't have any interruptions during the whole journey.

For my journey from Prague to Budapest, I opted for the Euro night train, which I booked online for around. I travelled on the Intercity 53 from Prague to Budapest and it was great. There was free wifi on the train with great speed, so it was also possible to work. My journey from Prague to Budapest was excellent. I reserved a seat for myself in class 2, carriage 5, row 19 on seat D. Firstly, the price should be emphasised, as it was quite reasonable and worthwhile for the long journey time. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. They were always at my side and clarified any concerns. The wifi was extremely efficient and stable. I was able to work on my laptop during the journey. The train also arrived in Budapest on time. We set off at 7.15 am and arrived on time at 2.30 pm. The journey time was kept to very well. However, hygiene was not necessarily taken into account, as the toilets and seats were not well maintained. We had to change trains several times, which made the journey more time-consuming. Unfortunately, the noise level was not ideal. But overall, it was an excellent journey, especially because of the price and the liveable service!

Traveling from Prague to Budapest by Train

Introduction

When my friend and I mapped out our route through Central Europe, we knew we wanted the journey to feel like part of the adventure, not just a means of transportation. That’s why we chose to travel from Prague to Budapest by train. With scenic countryside views and a smooth cross-border ride, it turned out to be one of the most relaxing legs of our trip. In this post, I’ll share what it was like to travel in Business Class and offer a few tips to help make your own ride even better.

Route Overview

Street in Prague

The Prague to Budapest train is a scenic and convenient route that connects two of Europe’s most iconic capitals. The direct journey typically takes between 6.5 and 7 hours, depending on the service, and it’s a surprisingly smooth ride across three countries: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.

If you're wondering about the best way to get from Prague to Budapest, I’d absolutely recommend taking the train over flying. You avoid the airport hassle and instead get a comfortable seat, panoramic views, and an easy city-to-city connection.

Transportation Experience

We booked our train tickets on Omio about a week in advance. The entire process was seamless, and it was reassuring to have mobile tickets right on our phones, which is especially helpful while on the go.

We chose Business Class for this trip since it’s a longer train ride and both of us were carrying heavy suitcases. That little upgrade made a significant difference in comfort, allowing us to truly relax, work, or nap without feeling cramped.

While flying might seem faster at first glance, when you factor in airport transport, check-in, and security lines, the train is much more convenient and stress-free.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

Tram in Prague

Our journey started at Prague Main Station (Praha hlavní nádraží), which is centrally located and easily accessible by metro. You can even get there on foot if you’re staying nearby. The station is clean, well-signed in English, and offers cafés and luggage lockers for those arriving early.

We arrived at Budapest Keleti Station, a large terminal just outside the city center. From there, it was a quick metro ride to our accommodation in District VII. There are taxis and rideshare services right outside, but the metro is affordable and easy to navigate.

Schedule & Frequency

There are several daily train departures from Prague to Budapest. We took a late morning EuroCity (EC) service that left around 10:30 AM and arrived in Budapest just before 6 PM. The train was punctual throughout, and we appreciated not having to make any transfers.

Onboard Experience & Services

As mentioned, we opted for Business Class, and it was absolutely worth it. The carriage was quiet and spacious, with extra-wide seats, ample legroom, and fold-out tables. It was perfect for journaling or working on laptops. There was plenty of luggage space, including racks right beside our seats, which made it easier to keep an eye on our belongings. On EuroCity trains from Prague to Budapest, you're allowed to carry luggage free of charge, with no weight limits, assuming you can handle your bags yourself.

The Wi-Fi worked well for messaging and light browsing, and each seat had its own power outlet. Although we brought snacks with us, we also stopped by the dining car mid-journey to stretch our legs and grab a coffee.

The restrooms in Business Class were clean and well-stocked throughout the ride. I also appreciated how attentive and kind the train staff were. They even helped a nearby passenger rearrange their seat so they could sit with their travel buddy.

The scenery became truly magical in the second half of the trip, with rolling hills, wide open fields, and a quaint village. It really felt like we were gliding through a European storybook.

Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown

Our Business Class tickets cost approximately €55 each, and we booked them just under a week in advance. If you're on a tighter budget, Second Class starts around €29, but for longer routes with luggage, the extra space can make a big difference.

Booking ahead definitely helps with pricing, and there are often discounts available for youth, seniors, or rail pass holders. You don’t need a printed ticket, either. You can just show your digital one when the conductor comes by.

Estimated budget:

Item Cost (EUR)
Business Class train ticket €55
Taxi to Prague station €8
Snack & coffee at Prague station €6
Lunch onboard €10
Metro from Budapest Keleti €1.50
Total €80.50

Top Tips & Personal Recommendations

  • Choose Business Class if you're carrying luggage or want a more peaceful ride (worth every euro).
  • Sit on the right-hand side when heading south for the best scenic views as you cross Slovakia and approach Budapest.
  • Arrive 20–30 minutes early at Prague’s station. The platforms are underground, and the screens update close to boarding time.
  • Pack snacks and water, especially if you have dietary preferences. The dining car offers basics, but they are limited.
  • Have your passport handy. We were briefly asked for ID after entering Slovakia, even though it’s Schengen.

Conclusion

Business class seats

Taking the train from Prague to Budapest was one of the highlights of our trip to Central Europe. Between the comfort of sitting in Business Class, the scenery, and the ease of travel, the train turned a long ride into a treat rather than a chore. If you're looking for a smooth, scenic way to cross countries, book your seat and enjoy the ride.
