My journey from Prague to Vienna on the ÖBB Railjet RJ 73 was really pleasant and relaxed. As soon as I boarded in Prague, I noticed the modern and clean train. The seats were comfortable, with plenty of legroom, and I was able to stow my luggage without any problems. During the journey, I had a great view of the varied landscape between the Czech Republic and Austria - from rolling hills to small villages and rivers. There was a calm, pleasant atmosphere on the train. Many passengers used the time to read or work, while others simply enjoyed the view out of the window. I found the free wifi and power sockets at every seat particularly practical. I was also impressed by the on-board restaurant: the selection was good, the staff were friendly and the coffee was delicious.

I travelled from Prague to Vienna on the RJ 257 - a pleasant connection, but with a few drawbacks. The train was quite full when I boarded in Prague - no wonder, coming from Berlin. Without a reservation I would probably have had to look for a seat for longer - so it's highly recommended to book a seat in advance. Otherwise: train was clean, quiet, wifi worked, seats comfortable. Journey time is ok, about 4-5 hours. It was a bit annoying that some people sat in other people's seats despite having a reservation. Nevertheless: Good connection, but without a reservation it can be stressful.

I went on holiday to Prague with my family and travelled there and back by train. It's the best option for us. Very comfortable. As we have a small child, we travelled in the children's carriage. The child had enough space to run and play and could also watch Czech films for children. Some of the films were played in Czech, some even in English or German.

My journey from Prague to Vienna turned out to be a good one. The staff were very friendly, polite, respectful and they always responded to my concerns and interests. The train also arrived in Vienna on time. Hygiene was taken into consideration, as the toilets were very clean and well maintained. However, there were several changes that made the journey more difficult. Personally, I found the price to be a little on the expensive side. Also, the seats were not comfortable and well maintained. Overall though, a good journey.

My journey from Prague to Vienna was pretty good. Firstly, the courteous staff should be emphasised, as they were very nice and friendly and treated their guests very well. The train also arrived in Vienna on time. Attention was always paid to hygiene, as the toilets were clean and well maintained. The seats were also very comfortable and cosy. However, the volume was not adequate and the wifi connection was not efficient and was rather slow. Also, the price was a bit expensive. But overall a pretty good trip.

It was very easy to book the tickets from Prague to Vienna online. I booked seat 18 in carriage 3. As always, the journey was very smooth and the staff were very nice and chatty. The train was relatively clean inside, but the toilets are not very hygienic. The train left Prague on time and I didn't have to change trains to Prague once. The journey took a little longer on average (as I travelled via the city of Brno) at around six hours. It was quiet inside the train. The free power sockets and free wifi worked very well. As always, the price-performance ratio is very good!

Most trains are jointly operated by České dráhy (CD) and ÖBB (Austrian Railways), though RegioJet also offers direct trains on this route. While flights and buses are available, the mix of comfort, speed, and amenities onboard the train makes it my preferred choice. On Omio, you can compare train, flight and bus options, making it a great way to get an overview of all the options.

Transportation Experience

Taking the train was incredibly easy: just show up at the station and board before the doors close (about a minute before departure). Settle into your seat, and you’re off! The ride was smooth, with minimal vibration. Thanks to free Wi-Fi and an onboard restaurant car, the time flew by. Before I knew it, we arrived at Wien Hauptbahnhof, just a short metro ride away from Vienna’s city center.

Overall, it was by far the most convenient and relaxing way to travel between the two cities.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

Praha Hlavní Nádraží (Prague Main Station) Located just 10–15 minutes by foot from the Old Town and well-connected by metro and tram, makes it very convenient. The old station building is a hidden gem, with beautiful Art Nouveau architecture and the station's best café. Don’t miss it!

Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Main Station) Opened in 2014, this modern station lies just south of the city center and is served by metro and trams. It’s spacious, easy to navigate and packed with shops, cafés, and onward connections. It's the ideal arrival spot for Vienna.

Schedule & Frequency

  • Railjet (CD/ÖBB): Up to 9 daily departures, roughly every 2 hours
  • RegioJet: 4 daily trains
  • Railjet and Regiojet trains both take the route via Brno to Wien Hauptbahnhof
  • Two daily slower alternatives via České Velenice to Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, which are less popular but great alternatives if the main services are sold out or too expensive.

Onboard Experience & Services

I traveled on Railjet RJ 79, departing Prague at 12:12 and arriving in Vienna after 4h 9m. The train was one of CD’s blue Railjets. The interior is nearly identical to the red ÖBB version, though the Austrian sets offer more seats in Business Class. All Railjet trains have:

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Power outlets
  • Comfortable seating in all classes
  • An onboard restaurant with food, snacks, and beer on tap

Classes of Travel

  • Economy Class From €14.99 - Comfortable seating in airline-style rows or around a table. Great for budget travelers.
Beautiful wooded countryside
  • First Class From €29.99 - Stylish leather seats, more space, and solo/2-person table seating, ideal for solo travelers or couples. Often only €10–20 more than economy, so it's definitely worth considering!
Inside the old station building
  • Business Class €15 upgrade on any First Class ticket gets you reclining leather armchairs, extra space, and complimentary drinks served at your seat. There are only 6 Business Class seats on CD (blue Railjets), so book early or pick a service with ÖBB (red Railjet) for better availability.

Scenery and Relaxed Ride

The route isn’t the most scenic overall, but the stretch before Brno, through the Moravian Karst National Park, offers some lovely hill views. Otherwise, the ride is smooth and peaceful, with plenty to keep you entertained, be it the dining car, browsing online, or napping in comfort.

The large and comfy business class seats

For a closer look at the train and journey, check out the short I made about showcasing the large business class seats, the beautiful station in Prague, and the beautiful autumn scenery as the train approaches Brno. Check out my video for more info:

The Luxurious Business Class Experience

The Business Class seats and service were the highlight of my journey, featuring lots of legroom, soft padding and a huge amount of recline. The onboard host will take great care of you, offering:

  • A welcome drink.
  • A 50 CZK voucher for the dining car or trolley.
  • Seat-side meal service delivered directly to your seat from the restaurant car. It felt like flying First Class for just €15 extra, an absolute treat if you're celebrating or just want to indulge.

Ticketing Advice & Budget

I booked 2 months in advance, paying:

  • €29.99 for First Class
  • €15 for the Business upgrade
  • Total: €44.99 Booking closer to the travel date can be much more expensive, especially for Railjet trains. Check on Omio to compare the different Prague to Vienna by train options.
  • RegioJet trains (often cheaper)
  • České Velenice route (slower but can be a bargain)

Fare Summary

Class Lowest Price (Advance)
Economy From €14.99
First Class From *€29.99
Business Class From €44.99 (incl. upgrade)

*Business = First Class fare + €15 supplement

Top Tips & Recommendations

  • Don’t miss the old Art Nouveau station in Prague, and grab a coffee at the cozy cafe there!
  • Check First Class prices - sometimes it's just €5–10 more than Economy.
  • Watch for views as the train passes through Moravian Karst.
  • Want luxury? - Try Business Class, with great service and comfy seats!
  • Railjet too pricey? - Compare prices with RegioJet or the slower alternative via České Velenice to save money.

Conclusion

Whether you’re traveling on a budget or splurging on luxury, the Railjet train from Prague to Vienna offers one of the best travel experiences in Central Europe. With great seats, reliable service, and stunning comfort in Business Class, this route is a fantastic alternative to flying or taking the bus. Purchase train tickets on Omio, then sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey!
