I really enjoyed my train journey from Budapest to Vienna on the ÖBB Railjet RJ 1036. I had a good feeling as soon as I boarded the train at the station in Budapest: the train was modern, clean and offered plenty of space. During the journey, I was able to lean back and relax, enjoy the comfortable seats and the smooth ride. The view of the passing Hungarian and Austrian countryside was particularly pleasant - perfect for simply switching off. There was free wifi and a pleasant atmosphere on the train, so the almost two and a half hours wifi-ed by. I was also impressed by the on-board restaurant: the selection was good and the coffee was delicious. The punctuality of the Railjet RJ 1036 was also excellent - we arrived in Vienna on time, without any stress or rush.

I found the journey from Budapest to Vienna excellent. I didn't find the price of the ticket cheap, but not expensive either. I thought it was quite fair. The staff on the train were very friendly, polite and took a great deal of interest in my concerns. The wifi connection on the train was very efficient, which made it easier for me to work on my computer. Great attention was paid to hygiene. The toilets were very clean and well maintained. Unfortunately, there were a few transfers which made the journey more difficult. The reservation options were also not ideal. And the catering for seats was not very good either. As a result, I could see coffee stains on some seats. Overall a good journey as the good features outweigh the bad.

My journey from Budapest to Vienna turned out to be excellent and a journey I will never forget. The price of the ticket was pretty good. The staff was very friendly and polite. They always had a big smile on their face. There were also no transfers to make the journey easier. Unfortunately, not enough attention was paid to hygiene. The toilets were not clean. Disappointingly, the noise level was not adequate and I didn't find the seats very comfortable. Nevertheless, a good and recommendable journey.

I travelled to Vienna on the ÖBB EC 40346. After a nice short trip in Budapest, I was very tired and wanted to relax on the journey to Vienna. I arrived at my destination in just under 2 hours and was very happy with the journey.

It was really easy to book tickets online! I booked seat 4 in carriage 2. The journey was very quiet and the staff were very nice as always! The seats were very comfortable. The train was clean inside, but the toilets were very unhygienic. As I didn't change trains once and travelled via Fischamend, Asfinag, Friedrichshof etc., I travelled for almost 3 hours in total. As always, the price-performance ratio is excellent!

Unfortunately, I thought it was a pity that I reached my destination late, as the train was slightly delayed. I also thought it was a shame that there was no wifi. The timetable was like this: I boarded the EC143 at 10:42 on 24 February. After about two and a half hours, I arrived in Vienna at 13:19 with a slight delay. The journey was very comfortable, I didn't have to change trains, the seats were comfortable, there was paid wifi and friendly staff. Unfortunately, the train was overcrowded and the toilets were locked. As a result, the noise level was not very adequate and the hygiene at the end of the journey was rather mediocre. The price-performance ratio was also not so good, it could be a little cheaper.

Train number EC 40347 travelled from Budapest to Vienna on 15 September at 19:42. The journey was without changing trains. Unfortunately, the seat reservation was cancelled due to the delay. The journey from Budapest to Vienna was a pleasant experience for me overall. The staff on board were extremely friendly, helpful and made sure everything ran smoothly throughout the journey. The wifi connection on the train worked reliably, which allowed me to work, communicate or relax during the journey. The hygiene conditions on the train were good, providing a clean and comfortable environment. Moreover, the punctuality of train departures and arrivals was also commendable, which made it easier to plan my itinerary. However, I must mention that the comfort of the seats on the Budapest to Vienna route could be improved. The noise level on the train was occasionally annoying. It was also necessary to change trains during the journey, which required additional time and effort. Overall, however, the journey was pleasant and recommendable despite the negative points mentioned, mainly due to the excellent staff, good hygiene conditions, reliable wifi connection and punctuality throughout the journey.

My journey from Budapest to Vienna was extremely enjoyable. The price was very reasonable. In my opinion, it was relatively inexpensive and good value, so I bought the ticket. The staff were very friendly and respectful of their guests. They always clarified my questions and concerns, so I felt like I was in good hands. The wifi was very efficient and stable. This enabled me to stay entertained or do important work on my laptop. Maximum attention was paid to hygiene. The toilets and seats were very well maintained and hygienic. However, the train did not arrive in Vienna on time. In addition, the noise level was not adequate and, disappointingly, the seats were not comfortable. But overall a good experience!

However, no attention was paid to hygiene, as the toilets were not clean and tidy. The seats were not comfortable and well maintained. I travelled from Vienna to Budapest by train on 8 May 2024. On 9 May 2024 I travelled back to Vienna. The journey started at 17:40 and we arrived in Vienna at 20:20. My review of the return journey from Budapest to Vienna: The return journey was excellent! Everything went much better than on the outward journey. The journey from Budapest to Vienna was mixed, to put it mildly. On the positive side, the train was very clean and comfortably equipped. I travelled on the EuroCity train, which has the train number EC 100. The train left Budapest Keleti pályaudvar at 08:02 and arrived at Vienna Central Station at 10:39 after a journey time of around 2 hours and 37 minutes. The train's interior was a little outdated, which detracted from the overall impression. The seats were comfortable, but not particularly modern or inviting. There was plenty of space for luggage during the journey, but there were no power sockets at the seats, which can be impractical for travellers who want to charge their devices. The service on board was okay, but not outstanding. The staff were friendly but sometimes seemed overwhelmed, especially during peak times. There were no significant food or drink options on the train, which made the journey a little monotonous. A small snack or drink offering would certainly have enhanced the experience. However, the views during the journey were a highlight. The route leads through picturesque landscapes and offers a beautiful view of the Hungarian and Austrian countryside. The rolling hills and wide fields are a welcome change from the hectic city life. Overall, the connection from Budapest to Vienna with the EuroCity train EC 100 is acceptable, but there is definitely room for improvement. The punctuality of the train was positive and the journey time is pleasantly short. For travellers looking for a simple connection between these two cities, the train is a practical choice, but those looking for comfort and service may be disappointed.

The train journey on Railjet 301 from Budapest to Vienna was simply fantastic! The train was super punctual and the whole journey was absolutely relaxed. The seats are very comfortable and offer enough space to feel at ease on the almost two-and-a-half-hour journey. I particularly liked the modern design of the train and the cleanliness. Everything was neat and tidy, from the seats to the toilets. The large windows offer a wonderful view and it was a pleasure to watch the scenery during the journey. The on-board restaurant was a real highlight! There was a good selection of snacks and drinks, and the service was fast and friendly. The free wifi also worked flawlessly, which is a big plus for me when I want to work or just do a bit of wifi while travelling.

This journey from Budapest to Vienna had been good. The train wasn't too crowded or noisy, so you could concentrate on your work. The train was clean and the toilets looked hygienic. I just didn't find the seats very comfortable. The tables were also far too small, so I found it difficult to put my computer up. Otherwise, the staff were friendly. There were also power sockets and internet. The train arrived on time and I didn't have to change trains in between.

A really practical connection from Budapest to Vienna. The train arrived very punctually and thanks to our seat reservation we didn't have to worry about anything. The train was very full, but the journey was still very pleasant and quiet. We travelled for about three hours. There were toilets, which were really clean, and there was also the opportunity to buy something to eat or drink. The train was very modern, so you could also charge your mobile phone on the way.

Budapest to Vienna Aboard The Railjet’s Luxurious Business Class

Introduction

Budapest and Vienna are two of Europe’s most amazing capital cities, both known for stunning architecture and fascinating culture. The two cities are also well connected by express trains, departing frequently on the route from Budapest to Vienna. In this article, I’ll be showing you the experience of traveling on these high-quality, great-value trains and sharing a few of my tips to get the most out of your trip!

Route Overview

Our journey from Budapest to Vienna travels west, closely following the mighty Danube River for much of its journey. We will pass through the major city of Győr before crossing the border into Austria. Our train trip covers 257 kilometers, with a travel time of just over 2.5 hours, making the train a very convenient option.

Roughly half of the trains use modern ÖBB Railjet carriages from Austrian State Railways, which is the train I’ll be showing you today. Many other departures consist of slightly older EuroCity carriages from Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), while private operator RegioJet also offers a few trains throughout the day.

You could also take the bus from Budapest to Vienna, but this is a slower way to travel with limited onboard facilities. In my opinion, buses are nowhere near as comfortable, so the train really is the best choice!

Transportation Experience

Taking the train from Budapest to Vienna really couldn't be any easier. There’s no formal check-in process: you simply turn up at the station and board the train. If you’ve reserved a seat, this will be clearly shown on your e-ticket—and if not, you can select any available seat in your class of travel onboard.

These modern ÖBB Railjet trains ride smoothly and come equipped with free Wi-Fi. My favorite feature is the onboard restaurant—I almost always visit this when traveling on this route.

The train offers a relaxing and civilized way to travel from Budapest to Vienna, and I highly recommend it to anyone!

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

Most trains depart from the Budapest Keleti Train Station, situated about one kilometer east of the city center. The station is connected to Lines 2 and 3 of the Budapest Metro, but it’s also easy enough to walk to the station. The station building is incredible and one of my favorites in Europe. It features a few shops and eateries, as well as a Premium Lounge for First Class and Business Class passengers.

The grand, ornate facade of Budapest Keleti railway station with a statue and domed roof.

The arrival station is Vienna Main Station (Vienna Hbf). This modern station opened in 2014 and is impressive in its own right. It's located around two kilometers from the center, with connections to commuter trains and U-Bahn (metro) services.

Schedule & Frequency

Trains from Budapest to Vienna are very frequent, with at least an hourly service from early morning to late evening.

  • Railjet - 8x daily departures
  • EuroCity - 8x daily departures
  • RegioJet - 4x daily departures

Onboard Experience & Services

I traveled on the Railjet for my journey—the RJX 64 in particular—departing at 11:40, with a journey time of 2 hours and 40 minutes. I selected Business Class for the journey, but First and Second Class are both great options for the trip, too.

All classes have access to:

  • Comfortable seating
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Power sockets
  • The dining car

Travel Classes

  • Second Class: Starting at €15, this offers comfortable and spacious seating, with tables for four or pairs of airline-style seating. A great budget option!

  • First Class: For as little as €10 extra, you can enjoy reclining leather seats and the option to have a solo seat or a table for two. Extra legroom is provided, and you can enjoy at-seat service from the dining car.

  • Business Class For an additional fixed fee of just €16, you can upgrade to Business Class, with massive leather armchairs and a generous recline. All seats are in compartments designed for solo travelers or groups of up to four. This is the most luxurious option—and my preferred choice!

The Dining Car

The dining car is one of my favorite aspects of the ÖBB Railjet. All passengers are able to take advantage of it, while First Class and Business Class passengers also have the option of in-seat dining.

The dining car menu is expansive, featuring various main courses, snacks, hot and cold drinks, plus a selection of seasonal specials. On this trip, I tried the spinach spaetzle in a smoked cream sauce and an apple strudel for dessert. The total cost was €20, with the option to pay by credit card or cash (euro or Hungarian forint).

Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown

Budapest to Vienna train ticket prices are based on demand, with fully flexible options available for spontaneous travel. Booking far ahead on Omio will likely offer you significant savings. I booked my ticket two months ahead and paid:

Expense Cost (EUR)
First Class ticket €29
Business Class seat reservation €16
Total Ticket Cost €45
Meals in the dining car (optional) €20

Consider RegioJet if you're seeking a cheaper journey, as the fare is often lower for the same route.

Top Tips & Personal Recommendations

  • Arrive early at Budapest-Keleti to admire the station building.
  • If you have a First Class or Business Class ticket, visit the Premium Lounge.
  • Business Class seating is very limited, so book ahead to avoid disappointment.
  • Business Class passengers can enjoy a free welcome drink on the train.
  • Pay by card in the dining car to enjoy a small discount.
  • Reserve a seat on the right-hand side for views of the Danube River.

Conclusion

Traveling by Railjet train from Budapest to Vienna is a terrific experience, especially in Business Class, which is my personal recommendation. It’s certainly more convenient and comfortable than taking the bus between the two cities! Book train tickets on Omio now to travel at the best price in your chosen travel class.
