Coaches to Lyon depart from London Victoria regularly every day. The service is provided by Eurolines coaches, a National Express company. In total the journey takes around 12 hours, there are five convenience stops and one change over in Paris. The coach arrives in at Gare SNCF De Lyon Perrache, a coachy terminus which is well served by public transport. Local and national services are provided by Ouicoach and there is also a high-speed rail link, known as a TGV, to other parts of France. Alternatively travellers can catch an intercity train or a regional route, all operated by SNCF, France’s national railway. The station is 10 minutes from the city centre by coach and 26 minutes on foot.
Lyon is the third largest of France’s cities and leaves visitors with numerous choices. The nightlife and shopping are legendary, but those who prefer quieter moments exploring a town’s cultural heritage won’t be disappointed. Dating back to Roman times, with a little help from 19th century silk weavers, the traboules at Vieux Lyon are a network of passageways and stairwells running through residential areas. Take a look around to find hidden courtyards, Italian archways and cobbled paths. Silk weaving is a major part of Lyon's heritage. You can learn about the workers lives at Maison des Canuts, or take a workshop tour at Atelier de Passementerie. Over at the Musée des Beaux-Arts visitors can grab a free audio guide before setting off to find timeless pieces by Monet, Matisse, Rubens and Picasso, then stop at its excellent cafe for refreshments. At night, head over to Péristyle, a free music venue where guests can still get drinks delivered to their table. Check it out in summer, where jazz, funk and blues is played under the building's dramatic arches.
