Why the Train from Vienna to Salzburg Is the Best Option
Introduction
After spending a few days in Vienna, I wanted to explore more of Austria, including the iconic Hohensalzburg Fortress. With multiple train departures every hour, taking the train from Vienna to Salzburg was the obvious choice.
In this article, I’ll share my experience and tips for choosing between the two train operators and how to get the best views of the Eastern Alps on the train from Vienna to Salzburg.
Route Overview
Both ÖBB (Austrian Railways) and Westbahn operate frequent trains between Vienna and Salzburg, with the fastest services taking around 2.5 hours.
You can also take the bus from Vienna to Salzburg, but they’re slower and run less frequently. Personally, I think it's better to stick with the train.
Transportation Experience
With lots of payment options available, booking train trips on Omio is easy, and the tickets are sent straight to your phone. Trains depart from two main stations in Vienna:
- ÖBB trains leave from Vienna Central Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof)
- Westbahn trains depart from Vienna Western Station (Wien Westbahnhof)
Both are central and well-connected by metro and tram. I chose Westbahn this time, as I was staying closer to Westbahnhof and fares were similar.
Route Details
Departure & Arrival Stations
Wien Westbahnhof is slightly smaller than Wien Hauptbahnhof but offers a shopping mall and food outlets. The station still has plenty of public transport connections to the rest of the city.
Both operators arrive at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, the city’s main rail hub, which is walkable to the old town and well-connected by buses to major attractions like Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Schedule & Frequency
Both Westbahn and ÖBB run trains up to twice per hour from Wien Westbahnhof and Wien Hauptbahnhof. I took the 12:38 WB914 from Westbahnhof, which took 2 hours and 30 minutes. Some of ÖBB’s Railjet trains take just 2 hours and 25 minutes from Hauptbahnhof.
Onboard Experience & Services
Westbahn uses modern double-decker Stadler KISS trains. I opted for First Class for an extra €39.90, which offers solo seats, free water and slightly more space. However, for such a short journey, I'd say Standard Class provides better value.
Westbahn also offers a Comfort Class — it’s the same as standard but with all seats arranged around tables.

Every seat comes with:
- Power outlets
- Fold-out tables
- Free Wi-Fi
There’s also a vending machine with snacks, drinks, and sandwiches. ÖBB’s Railjet trains offer similar amenities, plus a bistro carriage serving hot meals.

One perk of Westbahn is the upper deck, which is great for views, especially since many parts of the route are lined with noise barriers that block the lower level.
I recommend you sit on the left-hand side, where you can catch views of the Alps as you approach Salzburg. Overall, I found Westbahn to be a fast, comfortable, and convenient way to get to Salzburg.
Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown
Ticket prices vary depending on demand and how early you book. Here’s what I paid:
- Standard Class: €28.99 (booked 6 weeks ahead)
- First Class upgrade: €39.90
- Advance tickets can be as low as €13.99
Top Tips & Personal Recommendations
- Check which station (Westbahnhof or Hauptbahnhof) is more convenient for you.
- Compare different prices and options on Omio to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
- Sit on the left on the upper deck for the best scenery.
- Book early to snag the lowest fares (as low as €13.99!).
Conclusion
The train is the fastest, most frequent, and most scenic way to travel between Vienna and Salzburg, two iconic Austrian cities. Both ÖBB and Westbahn offer modern and comfortable trains, so you really can’t go wrong with either. And, of course, be sure to compare prices on Omio and book early to get the best fare.
