Had to travel from Vienna to Salzburg. The Westbahn offer was the cheapest and quickest, which is why I decided in favour of this offer. Buying tickets in the app is really straightforward. Another positive feature is that you can check in yourself in the app, as you don't even have to talk to the conductor.

I travelled for an excursion. The Westbahn is the cheapest way to get to Salzburg and therefore also the best. The ÖBB is more expensive and usually more crowded, so I preferred the Westbahn. What I liked best was how friendly the staff on the Westbahn are and that you can always get a seat here. The train was on time, clean and the charging stations and wifi worked well. Price/performance is good. But travelling by train is a bit expensive.

I had a great journey on the Railjet 641 from Vienna to Salzburg! The train was on time and the whole journey went absolutely smoothly - a real plus for anyone who values reliability. The modern carriages are very clean and offer a lot of comfort, whether in 1st or 2nd class. The seats are comfortable, there is plenty of space for luggage and the free wifi worked perfectly throughout the journey. I was particularly impressed by the friendly train staff, who were always helpful and created a pleasant atmosphere. The dining car is also a real highlight: the selection of food and drinks is varied and I was impressed by the quality. There are special seats for travellers with bicycles, and wheelchair users are also catered for - very inclusive and well thought out. The route itself is beautifully scenic and the journey flies by. I was able to make the most of the time to work and relax. If you value comfort, service and a relaxed journey, Railjet 641 is the perfect choice

IconBrightly lit in the night
I used the train to get back home after my holiday. Hence the late departure time, as I wanted to sleep on the train. Unfortunately, it didn't work out so well. The seats were rather uncomfortable and the train was brightly lit all night. Nevertheless, the rest of the journey was fine. The train left Vienna Central Station on time at 05:01 and reached Salzburg Central Station on time at 07:53. The toilets were clean and I was also able to charge my mobile phone. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the on-board bistro as I didn't use it.

From the capital of Hungary, it was back to Munich and thus I also crossed the intermediate station from Vienna to even Salzburg. All in all, the journey was relatively comfortable and the staff were accordingly very nice. The wifi was also stable again for once. Unfortunately, I am again annoyed by the typical problems such as train delays, which cause stress when changing trains, and toilets that need improvement.

I started the journey from Vienna Central Station to Salzburg Central Station in the Rail-Jet. Departure was planned early in the morning at 05:45 and was on time. By booking a Sparschiene ticket, the ticket was very cheap. Of course, you have to accept that you can't cancel and that you are tied to a certain train, but for me this is usually no obstacle. Due to the early time, the atmosphere on the train was pleasantly calm, so I can only recommend taking this opportunity.

My journey from Vienna to Salzburg was very relaxed, as the train was extremely comfortable. The comfortable and wide seats in particular made a good impression on me. The service was very good, you could have coffee brought to your seat. The train reached Salzburg without any delays. It was clean and tidy on board, which contributed to a positive overall impression. I can recommend this connection.

I travelled from Vienna to Salzburg by train and really enjoyed the journey. The train was extremely comfortable, especially because of the soft and ergonomic seats. The indoor climate was also pleasant. I was able to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the route. The train was not delayed for the entire journey. The service was good, there was even an on-board bistro.

I have nothing but positive things to say about my journey from Vienna to Salzburg. Firstly, I should mention the beautiful scenery along the route. I ordered a delicious currywurst in the bistro, which was reasonably priced. The train arrived on time and was clean and well equipped.

The train was overbooked, so we didn't get a seat. This is very impractical on a longer journey. Most of the time you have to stand in the aisle. As many people felt the same way, the atmosphere was very relaxed, at least after a while. The staff were also always friendly and keen to help.

The train journey from Vienna to Salzburg with Deutsche Bahn was pleasant, with great comfort and good service. However, the cleanliness left a lot to be desired. The journey time was short and the price-performance ratio was fair. Despite a slight delay, I was satisfied with the journey

Disadvantages
IconVienna Westbahnhof has fallen out of time
I travelled on the Railjet RJ 660 from Vienna Westbahnhof to Salzburg. I used an ÖBB Sparschiene, so I travelled very cheaply even without a Vorteilskarte. Unfortunately, Vienna Westbahnhof is not very inviting, but the train journey was quick (less than two and a half hours, we were on time) and comfortable (enough space for me and my luggage, wifi and a power socket so that I could work at my seat, clean washrooms and interior, friendly train attendants).
Advantages
IconBeautiful view
Disadvantages
IconPricewise okay
I travelled to Salzburg on the EC81 463. As it was once again an Austrian train, I was already convinced of the journey in advance. I have hardly had any bad experiences with these trains and my expectations were also met here. The service was nice and polite, the hygiene was acceptable and the journey time was also very manageable due to the beautiful view. Only the price was too high for the short journey
Advantages
IconVery great service
Disadvantages
IconUnfortunately late arrival
I travelled on the EC 463 and should have arrived at my destination within 4 hours according to plan. Even for the route, that would still have been a long way, but unfortunately the train was increasingly delayed from station to station. I'm not really used to that in Austria. However, the service was very nice and the hygiene of the train was also very acceptable. All in all, I am satisfied
Advantages
IconClean
Disadvantages
IconExpensive
Even though it was easy to book the ticket, it wasn't favourable in my opinion. The wifi was okay, but sometimes it didn't work. The people were also quite nice. The toilets were also very clean and didn't stink. The train was 15 minutes late, but I got to my destination very quickly. Nevertheless, it was worth it.
Advantages
IconFast journey
Disadvantages
IconExpensive
Despite the slightly overpriced train ticket, which I was able to buy very easily online, I really enjoyed this journey from Vienna to Salzburg because I didn't have to change trains on my journey, which is the best aspect. I was also very impressed that I completed my train journey in the shortest possible time and that the train was not delayed. I also really liked the very good wifi. The toilets were very clean.
Advantages
IconSimple booking
Disadvantages
IconSlight delay
I was extremely impressed with this train journey from Vienna to Salzburg, as I was able to reach my destination very quickly despite the slight delay to the train. I also really liked the fact that I was able to book my train ticket very easily and cheaply online. What I liked best was that I didn't have to change trains and could watch films during the journey using the good wifi. The toilets were very well maintained.
Advantages
IconSimple booking
Disadvantages
IconDelay
I wasn't particularly impressed by this train journey from Vienna to Salzburg, because unfortunately the train was delayed, which meant that I was delayed in reaching my destination. I also didn't like the fact that the ticket was quite expensive. What I liked best was that I could book my ticket very easily online. I also liked the fact that I didn't have to change trains and could watch films during the journey with the good wifi. The toilet was also very clean.
Advantages

In my opinion, this train journey gets a 4 out of 5 stars because I was able to book my ticket very easily online, but it wasn't cheap in my opinion. My favourite thing was that I didn't have to change trains. I also thought it was great that I could reach my destination in a very short time. The toilets were very clean, which I really liked. The wifi was also convincing.
Advantages

IconSmooth running
I travelled on the Railjet RJX 766 from Vienna via Linz directly to Salzburg. The journey took three hours and the train was on time. I used my 1st class Interrail ticket, for which I didn't have to buy a supplement in Austria. Accordingly, I chose a free seat in 1st class. The leather seat was very comfortable and I had a power socket for myself, which I used for my laptop. Thanks to the entertainment portal, I could watch a film during the journey. The only drawback of the journey was that it sometimes jerked a little and my laptop rattled on the folding table. Apart from that, I really enjoyed the journey, the toilet was clean and the train staff were friendly.
Advantages
IconShort journey duration
IconClean train
IconComfortable seats
Disadvantages
IconPoor wifi
My journey from Vienna to Salzburg was absolutely uncomplicated and I can't say anything negative about this connection, except that the wifi was a bit poor. The cleanliness in the carriages and also in the toilets was outstanding. The comfort was also very good, which was particularly noticeable in the comfortable seats. There were no delays and the journey time was also extremely short for this connection.

On our journey from Vienna to Salzburg by train we found clean and comfortable seats. We enjoyed our time on the journey and the Internet wifi worked perfectly and quickly the whole time. Unfortunately, the train attendant was a bit unfriendly.

Why the Train from Vienna to Salzburg Is the Best Option

Introduction

After spending a few days in Vienna, I wanted to explore more of Austria, including the iconic Hohensalzburg Fortress. With multiple train departures every hour, taking the train from Vienna to Salzburg was the obvious choice.

In this article, I’ll share my experience and tips for choosing between the two train operators and how to get the best views of the Eastern Alps on the train from Vienna to Salzburg.

Route Overview

Both ÖBB (Austrian Railways) and Westbahn operate frequent trains between Vienna and Salzburg, with the fastest services taking around 2.5 hours.

You can also take the bus from Vienna to Salzburg, but they’re slower and run less frequently. Personally, I think it's better to stick with the train.

Transportation Experience

With lots of payment options available, booking train trips on Omio is easy, and the tickets are sent straight to your phone. Trains depart from two main stations in Vienna:

  • ÖBB trains leave from Vienna Central Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof)
  • Westbahn trains depart from Vienna Western Station (Wien Westbahnhof)

Both are central and well-connected by metro and tram. I chose Westbahn this time, as I was staying closer to Westbahnhof and fares were similar.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

Wien Westbahnhof is slightly smaller than Wien Hauptbahnhof but offers a shopping mall and food outlets. The station still has plenty of public transport connections to the rest of the city.

Both operators arrive at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, the city’s main rail hub, which is walkable to the old town and well-connected by buses to major attractions like Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Wien Westbahnhof train station

Schedule & Frequency

Both Westbahn and ÖBB run trains up to twice per hour from Wien Westbahnhof and Wien Hauptbahnhof. I took the 12:38 WB914 from Westbahnhof, which took 2 hours and 30 minutes. Some of ÖBB’s Railjet trains take just 2 hours and 25 minutes from Hauptbahnhof.

Onboard Experience & Services

Westbahn uses modern double-decker Stadler KISS trains. I opted for First Class for an extra €39.90, which offers solo seats, free water and slightly more space. However, for such a short journey, I'd say Standard Class provides better value.

Westbahn also offers a Comfort Class — it’s the same as standard but with all seats arranged around tables.

A view of Westbahn's First Class
A view across a lake between Vienna and Salzburg

Every seat comes with:

  • Power outlets
  • Fold-out tables
  • Free Wi-Fi

There’s also a vending machine with snacks, drinks, and sandwiches. ÖBB’s Railjet trains offer similar amenities, plus a bistro carriage serving hot meals.

A view of the ÖBB Railjet Economy Class

One perk of Westbahn is the upper deck, which is great for views, especially since many parts of the route are lined with noise barriers that block the lower level.

I recommend you sit on the left-hand side, where you can catch views of the Alps as you approach Salzburg. Overall, I found Westbahn to be a fast, comfortable, and convenient way to get to Salzburg.

Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown

Ticket prices vary depending on demand and how early you book. Here’s what I paid:

  • Standard Class: €28.99 (booked 6 weeks ahead)
  • First Class upgrade: €39.90
  • Advance tickets can be as low as €13.99

Top Tips & Personal Recommendations

  • Check which station (Westbahnhof or Hauptbahnhof) is more convenient for you.
  • Compare different prices and options on Omio to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
  • Sit on the left on the upper deck for the best scenery.
  • Book early to snag the lowest fares (as low as €13.99!).

Conclusion

The train is the fastest, most frequent, and most scenic way to travel between Vienna and Salzburg, two iconic Austrian cities. Both ÖBB and Westbahn offer modern and comfortable trains, so you really can’t go wrong with either. And, of course, be sure to compare prices on Omio and book early to get the best fare.
