Blackpool South railway station is the point of departure for trains from Blackpool to Preston. Situated on Waterloo Road, it is just over ½ km from seafront attractions such as South Pier, Sandcastle Waterpark and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The town centre, with its colourful tourists sights, is 1 ½ km to the north or a 5-7 minute bus ride, and Bloomfield Road (home of Blackpool FC) is a 10 minute walk via Seasider's Way. Buses from the promenade, Blackpool Tower and Blackpool Zoo and Model Village call in at the stands on Waterloo Road, and the number 7 bus from Blackpool Airport also stops nearby.

Long associated with weaving and textiles, the Lancashire city of Preston is now a hub for the British aerospace industry.
