Renfe from Barcelona to Girona train information:
The route between Barcelona and Girona is serviced by the Spanish state-owned railway company Renfe, with 16 traditional and two high-speed trains each day. All journeys are direct, and take between about 40 and 80 minutes to complete.
There are 18 trains from Barcelona to Girona each weekday. The earliest leaves at about 7:00 am and the last at about 10:00 pm. The trains leave approximately hourly.
The train journey between Barcelona and Girona is relatively quick, taking between 40 minutes and just over an hour. (Most trips lrave from Barcelona Sants, the central railway station. All of these trips take 40 minutes to complete. Journeys departing from other stations take longer.)
Departure train station: Most of the trains (15 of the 18 daily trains) headed from Barcelona to Girona leave from the Barcelona Sants station - the main station in Barcelona. The station is situated in west Barcelona, and is easily accessed by metro trains, bus or taxi.
One midmorning train each day leaves from the Sant Adreu Comtal, set in a traditional area of Barcelona, and linked to the main station by metro lines. The final departure of each day is from the Barcelona El Clot Arago station, set in the Sant Marti district of Barcelona. This station is also linked to the main station by the commuter rail service.
Arrival train station: The arrival station, in all cases is the Girona main station. Girona is a deeply historical attraction; the station is about 0.6 miles from the historical city centre. The local bus station is right next door, and the centre is also well served by taxis. An underground passenger facility offers numerous shops and restaurants.
Only Renfe, the Spanish state-owned train operator, travels from Barcelona to Girona, using mostly traditional (not high-speed) trains. (Only the two later evening journeys from Barcelona Sants each day offers the high-speed service through Renfe AVE.) The distance covered is short - just over 50 miles. The journey, in most cases, takes about 40 minutes. All trains travel a direct route between Barcelona and Girona.
First and second class travel is available. First class travel offers more comfortable seating in leather seats, plus a newspaper. The two high speed trains each day offer second, second+ and first class travel. The major difference between the classes is the level of seating comfort.
Each passenger is allowed three pieces of luggage. The combined weight of the luggage should not exceed 25 kg. Bicycles are allowed as long as they are folded and placed inside a protective cover. Small pets are accommodated on board, as long as they are kept in a container.
Assistance for the disabled is available, and should be arranged prior to the date of departure.
Ticket prices vary considerably during each day. Booking online is advisable, to allow for comparison of prices at different times, and between traditional and high-speed trains. Booking in advance also allows the securing special deals, as does flexibility with respect to dates.
Passengers board the train most frequently from Barcelona Sants, which is located around 1.5 miles (2.4 km) away from the city centre, and they get off the train at Girona, located 0.7 miles (1.1 km) away from the city centre.
