Everything you should know about Öresundståg

Öresundståg operates various regional routes in the south of Sweden and connects Sweden and Denmark via the Øresund Bridge. Öresundståg operates in the six provinces of Blekinge, Halland, Kalmar, Kronoberg, Skane and Västra Götaland. The companies are therefore known as Blekingetrafiken, Hallandstrafiken, Kalmar länstrafik, Länstrafiken Kronoberg, Skånetrafiken and Västtrafik.

On 1 July 2000, the new railway and transport line over the Øresund Bridge was opened. At the same time, the Öresundståg started operating. Initially, the trains only commuted from Malmö to Copenhagen and then back from Denmark to Malmö. However, it was not long before the route network was expanded. In Sweden, additional connections to Helsingborg and Kristianstad were integrated. In Denmark, trains then also ran to Helsinger. In cooperation with SJ, further connections were gradually integrated into the network.

Currently, approximately half a million journeys per week are made by Öresundståg. A total of 111 multiple units are used. In Sweden these are electric trains of the type X31K; in Denmark type ET trains are used. These trains, which operate under the name Contessa, reach a maximum speed of up to 112 miles per hour.

Each individual multiple unit is made up of three carriages. These are connected to each other and numbered. In total, there are 229 seats available for passengers. In the event of increased demand, Öresundståg can connect up to three multiple units, increasing the capacity to 687 seats.

Train ticket types at Öresundståg – wide selection of tickets

Öresundståg offers you a wide range of discounts and tickets of all kinds. Whether you need a one-way ticket, regularly commute between two places or also want to use buses and other means of transport, there is a ticket to suit all your needs.

There is the DSB commuter ticket for adults, a pensioner’s card that allows you to travel by train, bus and underground, or even annual passes. With a DSB supplementary ticket, you always travel at a fixed price, no matter how far you travel. The zone ticket is valid for all connections on Sjælland, Lolland, Falster and Møn, or alternatively for Jutland and Funen. Of course, you can also travel through Nordjyllands Trafikselskab or in the Midttrafik or Sydtrafiks regions.

There are always corresponding discounts for children and pensioners. For children travelling alone at the weekend, there is also a special Children’s guide ticket. Travel groups of eight people or more benefit from a discount of up to 50 per cent. This also applies to school classes and kindergarten groups. If you are mainly travelling in the greater Copenhagen area, the City Pass with its numerous variants offers you many advantages.

Are you travelling with a pushchair? Then you should secure a free ticket for a pram space. The same applies if you are dependent on a wheelchair. Can’t go without a bike? Then you usually need a bicycle reservation. Your four-legged companion is also taken care of. Large dogs require a children’s ticket.

Other interesting options include the DSB Lounge Ticket, with free Wi-Fi access, the Louisiana Ticket, as a combined ticket for train travel and admission to the Louisiana Museum, the Commuter20 Card, a commuter ticket that is also valid abroad, and much more.

What is especially advantageous – your Öresundståg ticket is not only valid for your journey by train. It also includes connecting journeys by public transport in the city areas you are travelling to and from. You can use your ticket for one hour before and one hour after your departure or arrival.

Classes at Öresundståg

As with most other rail operators, Öresundståg offers a choice of two classes. Enjoy the comfort of first class or sit back in comfortable seats in second class. Here, you’ll find a special rest area and even a pet-friendly zone for passengers travelling with their pets. If you’re looking for a power socket for your tablet or smartphone, you won’t have to look far – you’ll find them in every seat area. Of course, there is also Wi-Fi on board the Öresundståg trains.

The first- and second-class seats are arranged in rows of four. It is possible to have four seats next to each other, but it is also possible to have two seats on each side facing each other. The seats are numbered. With the help of the relevant markings, you can quickly find out which seats are first class and which are second class.

First class is a little more secluded and therefore offers you more peace and quiet. In addition, the seats are softer, and there is more space for your luggage. First class is usually located in carriages 11, 21 or 31, with a total of twenty seats. However, only ten of these can be reserved in advance. From the outside, you will recognise the first-class area from additional markings. There is a yellow line above the windows. Sometimes, you will also find a “1” here.

In both first and second class, you can get delicious snacks and drinks in a small bistro.

The trains in the Öresundståg system

Öresundståg’s internationally operating regional trains are electrically powered multiple units, EMUs for short, of the classes X31K in Sweden and ET in Denmark. All trains operate on the entire route network, which also connects Denmark with Sweden, among other places. For example, they commute from Malmö to Copenhagen and back again. The journey takes them through the 2.5-mile Drogden Tunnel and the Øresund Bridge, which is twice as long.

The three-car trains run every twenty minutes on the route from Denmark to Malmö. On the routes to Gothenburg, Kalmar and Karlskrona, the trains run once an hour.

The modern multiple units reach top speeds of up to 112 miles per hour. For comfort, air conditioning, power sockets and a self-service bistro are available. Gradually, all trains are also being equipped with Wi-Fi. In the middle carriage of the three carriages, there are seats suitable for wheelchair users as well as a sanitary area that is suitable for those with disabilities. If necessary, up to nine carriages can be coupled together.

Timetable information: Timetables and timetable changes at Öresundståg

You can travel from Malmö to Copenhagen, for example, almost 24 hours a day. Trains usually run every twenty minutes. Only during the night is there just one connection per hour. In the event of delays, Öresundståg usually offers you a refund. Punctuality is a high priority here. Nevertheless, it is inevitable that there will be changes to the timetable at short notice from time to time. Unfortunately, unforeseeable events cannot be recorded in timetables. Therefore, you should always check with Omio in good time to see if there are any changes. Omio always tries to show you the most up-to-date connections.

Popular routes: From Denmark to Sweden and back with Öresundståg

The Öresundståg takes you quickly and reliably across the Øresund Bridge from Copenhagen in Denmark to Malmö in Sweden. Since a floating crane lifted the last bridge section, with an impressive length of 153 yards, into the air in September 1999, thus completing the link, numerous travellers have crossed the Øresund Bridge. A large proportion of people choose the Öresundståg trains to cross the border between Denmark and Sweden.

Want to travel from the south of Sweden to the north? You can travel from Malmö to Gothenburg in about five hours by train. Or maybe you want to travel from Hässleholm to Kalmar? Travelling from Copenhagen to Malmö by train will take you about four hours.

The sustainable way: Enjoy climate-friendly travel with Öresundståg

With their electrically powered railcars, the Öresundståg trains make an important contribution to environmentally conscious travel. In contrast to individual transport by car, here, the world’s valuable resources can be conserved. The per capita CO2 emissions of passengers are reduced to the minimum. Tips for travelling by train with Öresundståg

If you are travelling with your dog, cat or other beloved pet, Öresundståg offers you a very special service. The Swedish railway company offers its passengers a special zone, where they can sit with their pets. This is not only an advantage for the owners of these four-legged friends. Often, fellow passengers feel disturbed by animals. It is not uncommon for someone to be afraid of dogs or even allergic to cat hair.

If you want to travel by bike to explore the surroundings, this is also no problem with Öresundståg. As long as you are not travelling with a tandem, there are no problems. However, you may possibly have to take a later train. Öresundståg trains can carry a maximum of nine bicycles per train. Once this quota is exhausted, or if the train is significantly overcrowded, Öresundståg staff may ask you to wait for the next train.

The friendly railway company also stays true to its policy when it comes to luggage. You are allowed to take as much luggage as you can carry. Only bulky items are not allowed, for obvious reasons. So, always keep your fellow passengers in mind when putting your luggage together.
