Once a small fishing village Paignton is one of England's best loved holiday destinations. The town is served by excellent bus services from both local and national providers. The main bus stop is centrally located on Torbay Street, within walking distance of the beach and the town's many tourist attractions.
StageCoach and National Express are two of the large national operators servicing Paignton. They offer bus routes from many of England's large centres and have direct services from London, Newcastle and Penzance. There are also a number of Devon based operators such as Devon General, Chelston Leisure and Dart Pleasure Craft who provide services around the wider Devon region and between the many popular destinations on the Tor Bay Coast.
There are a number of significant architectural sites to be seen in Paington including the medieval Kirkham House which is sometimes open to the public, the 14th century Cloverdale Tower. Train enthusiasts will love the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway which operates between Paington and Kingswear. For kids, Paignton Zoo is the place to be. It houses 300 different species of animals and has featured on both the BBC's "Zoo Keepers" documentary series and ITV's "Zoo Story". In keeping with its long history of dedication to conservation the Zoo offers a discount to visitors who travel by bus. No trip to Paignton would be complete with out visiting the famous beaches. Paignton beach and Preston Sands are great for swimming and water sports. For nature lovers Broadsands beach, Hollicombe beach and Saltern Cove are noted for their distinctive geological and ecological features.
