Walking Around in Mont Saint Michel

The city of Mont Saint Michel is situated on a tidal island off the coast of Normady, France. This lesser-known gem of the region can easily be explored on foot, especially if you enjoy climbing narrow staircases and steep cobblestone pathways. Walking is the best way to see all that the island has to offer as you can walk along the perimeter of the city at low tide and get a different vantage point. Those wanting to walk the perimeter should go on a guided tour as the walk can be dangerous as the tide changes. A good place to start is along the ramparts of the abbey where you can enjoy views of the bay and mainland France. Follow the Grande Rue towards the abbey. Along the way, you can visit the church of Saint Pierre where some famous citizens of the island, such as La Mère Poulard and Anne Boutiaut, are buried. Further up the Grande Rue, you will find the Maritime Museum which houses displays showing the maritime history of the island and the ecology of the area. You can take a guided tour of the famous abbey at the top of the hill. Have lunch at La Mère Poulard before leaving the island.
