From Valencia to Barcelona by Euromed High-Speed Train: An Excellent Journey Along Spain’s Eastern Coastline
Introduction
On a recent trip to visit some of Spain’s biggest cities, I needed to travel from Valencia to Barcelona. Taking the train between Valencia and Barcelona is the most convenient option, with numerous departures throughout the day aboard the comfortable Euromed train.
In this article, I’ll show you what it’s like to take this journey and give you some tips and tricks to make the most of your experience.
Route Overview
The direct high-speed trains between Valencia and Barcelona are all operated by Renfe, the Spanish national operator. Most departures are classified as Euromed services, which refers to the fastest trains running along Spain’s eastern Mediterranean coastline, with the journey covering 366 kilometers and journey times ranging between 3 hours and 3.5 hours.
You can also find buses from Valencia to Barcelona on Omio. However, these are slower and offer fewer facilities, so the train is the best option for this journey.
Transportation Experience
I booked my Valencia to Barcelona train tickets on Omio, which offers a simple interface that makes purchasing tickets easy. Many payment options are available, and best of all, the eTicket for the journey was sent directly to my phone, which could then easily be presented at the time of travel.
Traveling with Renfe from Valencia North to Barcelona-Sants is very convenient, with the stations being centrally located. There’s no hassle over trying to find the right departure location or organizing transport to and from the city center.
Route Details
Departure & Arrival Stations
All trains depart from Valencia North (Valencia Estacio del Nord), located in the center of the city. The station can also be easily accessed by metro, using the nearby stops of Xàtiva, Bailén, or Alacant—each just a short walk away. Once in the station, I found a few shops dotted around the concourse.

Most stations in Spain require a security check for high-speed journeys, but Valencia North is a notable exception. Even so, I recommend arriving around 20-30 minutes before the departure of your train, if only to marvel at the station’s impressive architecture both inside and outside. Boarding the Euromed at Valencia North is as easy as finding your platform (displayed on the information screens) and presenting your eTicket at the platform entrance.
The arrival station of the Euromed train is Barcelona-Sants, a very modern station situated in the southwest of the city. The station also offers a connection to the city’s metro, allowing easy access to Barcelona’s hotels and tourist spots.
Schedule & Frequency
The train from Valencia to Barcelona has numerous daily departures, from early morning to evening. Typically, there are around eight trains per day, though you may find more choices during busy periods and weekends.
I took the EUROMED #01092, with a journey time of just 3 hours and 3 minutes. Thanks to major investments in high-speed railway infrastructure, high-speed trains in Spain are very punctual, and my train indeed ran on time.

Onboard Experiences & Services
I traveled in First Class (Confort) on the Renfe Euromed train from Valencia to Barcelona. The carriage features spacious reclining seats, with individual seats perfect for solo travelers. There are also tables for two or four, which are ideal for couples and groups.

Second Class (Estandar) has narrower seats with less legroom, though it is still a comfortable choice for train trips from Valencia to Barcelona.

The Valencia to Barcelona train is a modern Talgo 250 developed in Spain. These streamlined, high-speed trains have shorter carriages and a low floor for accessibility, as well as a unique wheel layout with just one pair of wheels between each carriage.
As I purchased a premium fare for an additional cost, I also got a complimentary hot meal with drinks. Departures in the morning receive breakfast, while midday and evening departures serve lunch or dinner. This was delivered to my seat by the friendly catering staff not long after departure.

All passengers have the option of purchasing food & drink from the cafeteria car, located in the center of the train. There, you can purchase sandwiches and snacks, as well as hot and cold beverages.

The Euromed spends much of its journey running alongside the Mediterranean coastline, with some great coastal views available for the first three-quarters of the journey.

Spain’s railways use two different track gauges, with the older railway lines using wider tracks than the newer high-speed lines. On the approach to Camp de Tarragona, the train passes through a gauge-changing shed, which seamlessly realigns the wheels of the train to use the narrower high-speed tracks for the rest of the journey.
Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown
The Valencia to Barcelona train route has demand-based pricing, which means it’s a good idea to book well ahead to secure the best price.
Here’s what I paid for this journey, booking one week in advance:
| Item | Cost (EUR) |
|---|---|
| Second Class | €61.00 |
| First Class Upgrade | +€13.00 |
| Premium Fare (Meal & Flexibility) | +€19.00 |
| Total | €93.00 |
The cheapest tickets on the Euromed from Valencia to Barcelona start at around €39.00, so it’s worth booking as far in advance as possible.
Top Tips & Personal Recommendations
- Sit on the right-hand side for views of the coast: Note that the train reverses on departure from Valencia North.
- All tickets include a seat reservation: This means trains at popular times can sell out, so book two to three weeks in advance to guarantee your spot on the train.
- Due to the wheel layout of these trains, the ride may be louder and bumpier than you might be used to on other trains. However, don’t worry, as this is normal for this type of train.
Conclusion
Taking the Renfe Euromed train from Valencia to Barcelona is the best way to travel between these two Spanish cities. With frequent departures, scenic coastal views, and comfortable seating, it’s a journey not to be missed. Book train tickets now on Omio to secure your seat at the best price.
