Okayama Station -> Okayama Castle / Korakuen Area, Okayama
The train from Fukuyama to Okayama is a fast and straightforward connection between two of western Japan's most historically rich cities. Fukuyama Station (30 Sannomarucho, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture 720-0066) sits directly on the Sanyo Shinkansen line, making this one of the most effortless intercity journeys in the Chugoku region. Okayama Station (1-1 Ekimotomachi, Kita-ku, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture 700-0024) is a major Shinkansen hub and gateway to destinations across western and central Japan.
Both cities carry serious historical and cultural weight. Fukuyama is home to one of Japan's most impressive surviving feudal castles, Fukuyama Castle, which sits dramatically visible from the station itself. Okayama is equally celebrated, best known for Korakuen Garden, one of Japan's three great landscape gardens, and Okayama Castle, known locally as "Crow Castle" for its striking black exterior. The bullet train from Fukuyama to Okayama connects these two destinations swiftly, making it easy to combine both on a broader Sanyo or Setouchi itinerary.
The Sakura and Kodama Shinkansen services both stop at Fukuyama, with the Sakura offering a faster option with fewer intermediate stops. Travelers holding a JR Pass can use both services freely, making it an excellent value connection on a multi-city itinerary through western Japan.
We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you plan to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.
The Sanyo Shinkansen is every bit as smooth, clean, and punctual as the more famous Tokaido Shinkansen connecting Tokyo and Kyoto, and on the Fukuyama to Okayama bullet train, the short hop means the on-board experience is brisk and efficient. That said, there is still plenty to appreciate.
