Information about the Fukuoka to Kitakyushu train route
The train from Fukuoka to Kitakyushu is one of the most convenient intercity rail connections in Kyushu, linking two of the island's most important urban centers with speed and ease. Trains depart from Hakata Station (1-1 Hakataeki Chuogai, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture 812-0012) and arrive at Kokura Station (1-1-1 Asano, Kokurakita-ku, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture 802-0001), which serves as the main gateway into Kitakyushu.
The Fukuoka to Kitakyushu bullet train runs along the San'yo Shinkansen line, making this one of the fastest and most efficient ways to travel between the two cities. The Kodama and Hikari Shinkansen services both stop at Kokura Station, making the fukuoka to kitakyushu by train journey a seamless experience for both first-time visitors and seasoned Japan travelers. For those not using the bullet train, local and limited express JR trains also operate along this corridor, offering a more budget-conscious alternative on the same route.
Kitakyushu itself is a city well worth exploring. Once a major industrial powerhouse, it has reinvented itself as a culturally rich destination with a thriving food scene, impressive museums, and scenic coastal areas. The Mojiko Retro District, with its beautifully preserved Meiji and Taisho-era architecture, is one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in all of Kyushu. The Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History and Human History, the Space World area, and the striking Kawachi Wisteria Garden (at its peak in late April to early May) are among the highlights that draw visitors making the trip from Fukuoka.
We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you plan to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.
Fukuoka to Kitakyushu by train: what to expect on board
Whether you choose the shinkansen from Fukuoka to Kitakyushu or a conventional JR express service, the on-board experience is reliably comfortable and punctual, as expected from Japan's rail network.
Shinkansen services
On the Kodama or Hikari Shinkansen, passengers can choose between Ordinary Car seating, which offers spacious, reclining seats with ample legroom, and the Green Car (first class), which provides wider seats and a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. Given the relatively short nature of this connection, most travelers find the Ordinary Car more than adequate.
Best seats for the view
The Fukuoka to Kitakyushu bullet train passes through an interesting stretch of northern Kyushu landscape, including urban areas, coastal glimpses, and mountainous terrain as you approach Kitakyushu. For the best views of the surrounding hills and industrial waterfront scenery:
- Seats on the left-hand side of the train (A window seats) when traveling from Hakata toward Kokura tend to offer the more scenic outlook.
- The approach into Kokura Station gives a clear view of the city's compact skyline and the Kanmon Strait beyond, a compelling preview of Kitakyushu's industrial heritage and coastal character.
On-board experience
The Shinkansen is, as always, immaculately clean, whisper-quiet, and precisely on schedule. For a route this short, the trolley service may not always pass through, so picking up drinks, snacks, or an ekiben (station bento box) at Hakata Station before boarding is a smart move. Hakata Station has an outstanding selection of food vendors and convenience stores on the concourse, making it easy to put together a great pre-departure meal.
Best time of year to travel
- Late April to early May: The Kawachi Wisteria Garden in Kitakyushu reaches full bloom, drawing visitors from across Japan. Trains and accommodation book out quickly during this window, so plan well ahead.
- Autumn (October to November): Mild temperatures, autumn foliage, and thinner crowds than the spring peak make this an excellent time to explore Kitakyushu at a comfortable pace.
- Winter (December to February): The cooler months bring fewer tourists and a quieter, more local atmosphere. Kitakyushu's food scene, particularly its famous yaki curry and fresh seafood, is especially comforting in cold weather.
- Summer (July to August): Hot and humid across Kyushu, but lively with local festivals. The Kokura Gion Daiko drum festival in late July is a highlight of the regional calendar.
Getting to Kitakyushu and beyond
Kokura Station is the central transport hub of Kitakyushu, and its position on both the San'yo Shinkansen line and several conventional JR lines makes it an excellent base for onward travel across northern Kyushu and beyond.
Within Kitakyushu
From Kokura Station, the JR Kagoshima Main Line and JR Nippo Main Line provide local connections across the city. The Kitakyushu Monorail (Kitakyushu Monorail Kitakyushu Line), known locally as the Kitakyushu Monorail, departs directly from Kokura Station and connects key parts of the city, including shopping districts and residential neighborhoods. Buses also fan out across Kitakyushu from stops adjacent to the station.
For the Mojiko Retro District, take the JR Kagoshima Main Line from Kokura to Moji Station, a short and scenic ride that brings you directly into the heart of this charming waterfront area.
Day trips and regional connections
Kitakyushu's location makes it a natural launching point for several compelling day trips:
- Shimonoseki (Yamaguchi Prefecture), just across the Kanmon Strait, accessible in minutes via the JR San'yo Line from Kokura or even on foot through the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel. An easy and fascinating cross-regional excursion.
- Beppu, approximately 1 hour by limited express on the JR Nippo Main Line, leading to one of Japan's most famous hot spring resort towns.
- Hiroshima, reachable in under an hour by Hikari or Kodama Shinkansen from Kokura, making it a viable day trip for those based in Kitakyushu.
- Nagasaki, around 2 hours by limited express via Hakata, offering a deeply historic and atmospheric destination.
Your JR Pass remains valid across all of these connections, making Kokura an excellent staging point on a wider Kyushu or Honshu itinerary.
What to expect when you arrive in Kitakyushu
Kokura Station is a well-organized and modern transport hub at the heart of Kitakyushu's Kokurakita Ward. The station building integrates seamlessly with the Amu Plaza Kokura shopping complex, meaning you emerge directly into a lively retail and dining environment, a useful bonus if you arrive hungry or need to pick up supplies.
Practical information at the station

- Luggage storage: Coin lockers of various sizes are available throughout Kokura Station. For heavier or bulkier bags, luggage forwarding services (takuhaibin) allow you to send luggage ahead to your next destination or accommodation, particularly convenient if you plan to explore the Mojiko waterfront or walk through the city before checking in.
- Currency and connectivity: ATMs accepting international cards can be found inside the station building. Japan Post and convenience store ATMs are the most reliable for international cards. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout Kokura Station.
Arriving in Kitakyushu for the first time
Kitakyushu is a city that often surprises first-time visitors. Despite its industrial origins, it has genuine warmth, a rich local culture, and some of Kyushu's most interesting food. The city is spread across several distinct districts, so it pays to plan your sightseeing by area.
The Mojiko Retro District is the standout attraction for most visitors, offering beautifully preserved early 20th-century buildings, waterfront dining, and views across to Shimonoseki. Kokura Castle and its surrounding gardens are a short walk or monorail ride from the station and provide an excellent introduction to the city's longer history. The Tanga Market, one of the oldest and most atmospheric covered markets in Kyushu, is ideal for sampling local street food and mingling with Kitakyushu residents.
Taxis are readily available outside both the Shinkansen and local exits of Kokura Station. The compact layout of central Kokura also makes it walkable for many of the city's key attractions, particularly if you are based near the station.
