The train from Fukuoka to Kagoshima is one of Kyushu's most rewarding rail journeys, linking two of the island's most distinctive and characterful cities. The route runs between Hakata Station (1-1 Hakataeki Chuogai, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture 812-0012) and Kagoshima-Chuo Station (1-1 Chuocho, Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture 890-0053), cutting through the heart of Kyushu along the Kyushu Shinkansen line.
Fukuoka is Japan's gateway to Kyushu, a vibrant, food-obsessed city famous for its street food stalls (yatai), compact and walkable center, and some of the best ramen in the country. Kagoshima, by contrast, sits at the southern tip of Kyushu with a completely different energy: a laid-back coastal city set against the dramatic backdrop of Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes. Watching ash-capped plumes drift across the bay from the city waterfront is an experience unlike anything else in Japan.
The Kyushu Shinkansen, the Mizuho and Sakura services, connects these two cities with speed and reliability, making it an excellent choice for travelers exploring southern Japan. Hakata Station itself is a major hub and easy to navigate, with clear English signage and direct access to Fukuoka's subway network and shopping facilities.
Beyond the cities themselves, the landscape visible from the train window offers a compelling preview of Kyushu's varied terrain: rolling hills, river valleys, and glimpses of volcanic topography as you move southward toward Kagoshima.
We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you plan to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.
Traveling the Fukuoka to Kagoshima bullet train is a smooth and comfortable experience from start to finish. Shinkansen services depart from Hakata Station's dedicated Shinkansen platforms, which are clearly marked in English and separated from the conventional rail concourse.

The scenery on this route becomes increasingly dramatic as the train moves south through Kyushu:
On-board experience
Like all Shinkansen services in Japan, trains on this route are clean, punctual, and very quiet. There is no loud announcement culture, and fellow passengers tend to keep noise to a minimum. A trolley service passes through carriages with drinks and snacks, but picking up something from one of Hakata Station's excellent food vendors or basement food hall before boarding is highly recommended, the station is particularly well-known for its regional bento options featuring Fukuoka specialties.
Best time of year to travel
Kagoshima-Chuo Station is the city's central transport hub and the southern terminus of the Kyushu Shinkansen, making it an excellent base for exploring the wider southern Kyushu region.

Day trips and regional connections
Kagoshima is a natural starting point for exploring the southernmost areas of Kyushu and beyond:
Your JR Pass covers the Kyushu Shinkansen and many of the regional JR lines radiating from Kagoshima, making this an efficient and cost-effective base for wider exploration of southern Japan.
Kagoshima-Chuo Station is modern, well-organized, and easy to navigate for first-time visitors. As the southern terminus of the Shinkansen network, it handles a significant amount of tourist traffic and is equipped with facilities to match.
Practical information at the station
Arriving in Kagoshima for the first time
Kagoshima is often described as Japan's Naples, and the comparison is apt. The city has a relaxed, sun-warmed atmosphere, an active volcano visible across the bay, and a strong local food culture centered around black pork (Kagoshima kurobuta), sweet potato shochu, and fresh seafood.
The most striking first impression for many visitors is stepping outside the station and catching a view of Sakurajima on a clear day, a near-perfect volcanic cone rising across the water. On days when the volcano is active, a fine layer of volcanic ash may dust parts of the city, a reminder of the raw natural forces that have shaped this corner of Japan.
The city rewards exploration on foot and by tram, and its relatively compact layout means key sights such as Sengan-en (a feudal-era garden with a famous Sakurajima backdrop), Tenmonkan (the lively central shopping and dining district), and the Kagoshima City Aquarium are all easily reachable from the station without the need for complex navigation. Allow at least a full day to do the city justice, and longer if you plan to venture out to the surrounding region.
