Tirrenia Ferries is an Italian ferry operator. Owned by the Italian Transportation Ministry, the company provides regular ferry connections from the Italian mainland to various popular island destinations, maki a useful option for backpackers.
Tirrenia has been around since the 1930s, but has changed dramatically in recent years. From the 1990s onwards, its ferries were updated and overhauled, cutting journey times and increasing capacities. The current fleet inc a range of larger Jupiter ferries, which can hold hundreds of cars as well as over 1,800 foot passengers. This means that Tirrenia o a handy service for holidaymakers who intend to drive around Italy's tourist attractions.
