From the Capital to the Mediterranean Sea in Just Three Hours – A Magical Ride with Ouigo
Introduction
France is a fairly large country. With Paris as the largest city and Marseille as the second-largest, trains have always connected the two. However, for decades, traveling between them took several hours. This was until 1981, which is when France made a bold move by inaugurating its first high-speed rail line. From then on, the French high-speed network expanded and eventually reached Marseille, the oldest city in France, located on the Mediterranean Sea. Just like the journey between Paris and Nice, the Paris to Marseille train trip can be considered a microcosm of France itself.

Route Overview
Going from Paris to Marseille by train is one of the easiest and most convenient travel experiences you can have. Three operators serve this route, including two from the French national railway, SNCF: 1) TGV Inoui, its premium brand, and 2) Ouigo, the low-cost alternative. In addition, Trenitalia, the Italian state railway, will run its Frecciarossa service between the two cities in June 2025.
For this trip to Marseille, I chose the cheapest option, which was Ouigo. I paid only €19. For a three-hour journey, that’s a bargain!
Transportation Experience
Since there are three operators running trains from Paris to Marseille, the best way to compare prices and book tickets is through Omio. It provides a seamless digital booking experience and is by far the easiest way to make a reservation.
Route Details
Departure & Arrival Stations
Gare de Lyon is one of the most iconic train stations in Paris. It was the main hub of the historic PLM (Paris Lyon Méditerranée). Be aware that Gare de Lyon has two halls: Hall 1 (Tracks A to N) and Hall 2 (Tracks 5 to 23).
Top tip: If you have some extra time, I recommend standing at the front of the station to admire its beautiful clock tower. If you’re visiting Paris during the National Heritage Days, you can even go inside the tower, which is simply stunning.

Marseille Saint-Charles is a welcoming station featuring typical southern French architecture. My favorite part of arriving in Marseille Saint-Charles is seeing the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, known locally as “La Bonne Mère.” It overlooks all the houses of Marseille and is truly beautiful. From Saint-Charles station, you're just 10 minutes away from the Old Port of Marseille.

Schedule & Frequency
Ouigo operates three round trips a day between Paris and Marseille. If you want more flexibility, you can opt for TGV Inoui or Frecciarossa. The train travel time is roughly the same, but the prices are generally higher.
Onboard Experience & Services
Ouigo is a low-cost service and offers only one class. However, you can pay extra to book a solo seat or one with a power outlet. Be aware that not all seats are equipped with outlets, and the onboard comfort is very basic. You get just a seat and not much else. Wi-Fi on Ouigo (called Ouifi) is available for €3 if you book the basic Ouigo Essentiel fare. It’s included if you book Ouigo Plus (an extra €9), which also comes with seat selection, access to Ouifi entertainment, and a more generous luggage allowance. On my trip, the Wi-Fi worked fairly well throughout the entire journey.
With Ouigo Essentiel, you’re allowed 1 small handbag and 1 cabin bag. Larger or extra luggage (max 30 kg) costs €5 in advance or €20 at the station. With Ouigo Plus, you get a large bag included, along with Wi-Fi and seat selection. Also, special items like bikes or skis require pre-booking, while other cargo like appliances or cardboard boxes are prohibited.
I should also let you know that there’s no bar carriage on Ouigo! Before heading out, be sure to pack some drinks and snacks for your journey.

I love traveling between Paris and Marseille because you experience a stunning transition—from the capital, through central France and the Rhône Valley, to the Provence region and, finally, the Mediterranean coast. In just three hours, the landscape constantly changes. One of my favorite moments is crossing the Avignon Bridge over the Rhône River. On the left-hand side, you’ll see the city of Avignon and the mighty Palace of the Popes. A bit later, still on the left, you’ll spot Mont Ventoux. If you’re traveling in winter, you might see snow on its summit—a beautiful contrast with the colorful Provençal countryside.
Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown
Ouigo tickets can be extremely affordable, especially if booked early. I’ve seen Paris to Marseille train tickets for as low as €10. For my journey, I booked one month in advance and paid €29, which is still a great deal.
Costs for one passenger:
| Item | Cost (€) |
|---|---|
| Train tickets | €29 |
| Total | €29 |
Top Tips & Personal Recommendations
