The train with the train number EC 193 travelled from Zurich to Munich without changing trains. The comfort on the train was very good, both the seats and the wifi, because of the good wifi I could easily do the rest of my work on the train. I really liked this journey because I didn't have to change trains and reached my destination quickly. I also thought it was great that I could book the ticket easily and that the price wasn't overpriced. I really liked the toilets and the general cleanliness of the train. However, I found it a shame that the wifi was weak, but it wasn't a problem as I was able to listen to my downloaded songs.

The EC 191 travelled directly from Zurich to Munich without changing trains. The train was slightly delayed by 15 minutes, which didn't bother me as I was able to work perfectly on the train thanks to the tables. What's more, the toilets were very hygienic, which I hadn't expected. The staff were extremely friendly and courteous as they helped me with my luggage. I can only recommend this connection to anyone.

The journey took about 3.5 hours. It was quiet in my compartment and I was able to charge my laptop using a power socket. I didn't have to change trains and could stay on the train. The train crew made a very friendly impression. The train was very well cleaned and smelled nice. Unfortunately, one toilet was broken or locked the whole time. We arrived on time at our destination station, Munich main station.
Advantages

In my opinion, this train journey was very expensive. Nevertheless, the train was not delayed and I arrived at my destination very quickly. I also really liked the good wifi and the clean toilets. Another very good point was that I was able to book the ticket very easily online. The last thing I liked was that I didn't have to change trains and was able to travel through without any stress.

Firstly, I would like to emphasise the extraordinary friendliness and patience of the staff. The train was also punctual to the minute. IconToilet vandalised
The train journey took about 3.5 hours. The conductor was nice to me and the journey went smoothly. Unfortunately, the toilet was very dirty and smelly. My seat was comfortable and I had a power socket at my seat. The train itself was very clean and well maintained, my compartment was relatively good, it wasn't overly noisy, but it wasn't quiet either. I was able to travel through relaxed and didn't have to change trains. We arrived at Zurich main station on time.

The journey was quite pleasant as it was fairly quiet and the train wasn't too crowded. Wifi was interrupted from time to time. Service on the train was quite friendly and kept us very well informed. The toilets were well cleaned. The train was a bit late, but we arrived almost on time. I was quite satisfied with the price-performance ratio
Advantages

IconGeschtank
When I travelled by train from Zurich to Munich, it wasn't so great. The seats were comfortable, but the train smelled of old cheese. The service was slow and the train ticket was more faithful. But the journey was short and the seats had power sockets. I also found the wifi very good, but sometimes I couldn't connect.
Advantages
IconFavourable
Disadvantages
IconVery many passengers
The journey from Zurich to Munich really impressed me, as I was able to book my ticket very easily online. I also liked the fact that I found an inexpensive ticket that meant I didn't have to change trains and could reach my destination more quickly. I also thought it was great that the wifi worked very well and the toilets were pretty clean. Nevertheless, I thought it was a shame that the train was overcrowded with passengers.
Advantages
IconClean train
IconNo delay
IconBeautiful landscapes
Disadvantages
IconExpensive bistro
I travelled from Zurich to Munich by ICE and was quite happy with the journey. I particularly liked the hilly and mountainous landscapes along the route. In addition, the train was extremely tidy and the toilets were also quite clean. The bistro was open, but I found the prices there quite high. Apart from that, I can say that there were no delays at all during the entire journey.

Don’t Fly! Take the Train from Zurich to Munich…

Introduction

Zurich, Switzerland, and Munich, Germany, are probably closer together than you might think. And if that wasn’t enough, they’re linked by a fast and convenient train service. I took this international route to see how comfortable it is and if it can really beat flying (spoiler: yes, it can).

Route Overview

This Zurich to Munich route crosses three countries, from Switzerland to Austria to Germany, without any issues thanks to the wonders of the Schengen border-free zone. It is operated by SBB, the Swiss national railway, using one of their New Pendolino electric multiple units. These trains can tilt in curves, allowing them to reach a higher average speed during their journey and, in this case, to travel the 326 kilometers (203 miles) between Zurich and Munich in 3 hours and 30 minutes. It’s not that fast, but it certainly is VERY scenic!

A red and white SBB New Pendolino train at Munich's main station, München Hbf, with a platform in the foreground.

Transportation Experience

Book your tickets on the Omio app. Trains rarely sell out, but I recommend you book in advance in order to benefit from reduced advance fares, as I was able to.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

In Zurich, trains leave from the city’s main station Zürich HB. This being Switzerland, it couldn’t be better connected to the rest of the city, thanks to many tram and suburban rail lines connecting here, offering seamless transfers to mainline trains. The station is also conveniently located very centrally within the city.

People walking outside the main entrance of Zürich Hauptbahnhof, with its impressive classical facade.

The same could be said in Munich: trains also terminate at the city’s principal station, München Hbf. Served by six metro lines, it is only a 15-minute walk away from the famous Marienplatz.

Schedule & Frequency

Trains run every two hours throughout the day, from 05:33 to 19:33. I opted for the 09:33 departure.

Onboard Experience & Services

The train features First and Second Class. I opted for First Class, which is laid out in a 2+1 configuration. The seats are wider than in Second Class and feature a nice recline, reading lights, plug sockets, and a large table, ideal for working on. The train has free Wi-Fi, although the connection can be quite patchy, especially when passing between countries.

A view inside the sit-down restaurant car on an SBB Pendolino train, showing tables with tablecloths and a clean, modern design.

There is also a fantastic sit-down SBB restaurant car onboard serving full meals, as well as smaller snacks, desserts, and drinks, including alcohol. It’s well worth a visit, even though the prices are on the expensive side. Everything is very good quality, though, and traditionally Swiss.

The interior of the second class cabin on the SBB Pendolino train, showing the 2+2 seating arrangement with comfortable blue seats and fold-down tables.

Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown

To get cheaper advance but non-flexible fares, I recommend booking as far in advance as you can. I paid around €51 for First Class, booking a week before departure. On the same day, fares are over double this, but they are fully flexible. Seat reservations cost €5 each, which isn’t usually required but advisable, especially at peak times, weekends, or holidays.

Item Cost (EUR)
Train ticket (Zurich to Munich First Class) €51.00
Total €51.00

Top Tips & Personal Recommendations

  • Plan and book ahead to get cheaper advanced fares.
  • It may be wise to reserve a seat, especially in Second Class at peak times.
  • Keep some space for an excellent SBB restaurant meal. It’s such a civilized way to enjoy a meal while winding past lakes or through mountain passes.
  • For some amazing views of Lake Zurich, look out the left-hand side around 10 minutes after departing.
A scenic view of Lake Zurich and surrounding mountains as seen from the window of a moving train, with a reflection on the glass.

Conclusion

This train is an excellent regular connection between Zurich and Munich. On top of that, it benefits from Swiss-German efficiency, with a train running every two hours in each direction.

And on top of that, you don’t even have to reserve a seat, as it isn’t compulsory; if you really need to turn up and go, you can! I recommend the First Class seating and onboard Restaurant experience to maximize your comfort as you seamlessly travel from Switzerland, through Austria, and onwards to Germany.
