Apart from the service to Trapani Birgi Airport which is some distance from the city, there are no regular buses from Palermo to Trapani. However, trains from Palermo to Trapani run frequently and offer passengers a quick and convenient way to make the journey. There is no direct service at present and passengers must change en route at Piraineto which is approximately half way. Trains are operated by Trenitalia and a journey should take between 3 and 5 hours depending on the service selected. Departures are early morning, mid-morning and early evening.

Trains from Palermo to Trapani depart from Palermo Centrale Station on Piazza Giulio Cesare. The railway station is one of the most important in Italy and is managed by the government-owned Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane S.p.A. of which rail operator Trenitalia is a subsidiary. It is easy to reach the station from anywhere in the city and its central location mean that it is well served by local buses including the 109 service from Pl Independenza.
