My journey from Oslo to Stockholm was satisfying. Firstly, some positive aspects. The staff was very friendly, polite and respectful. The volume was reasonable on the train and the seats were very comfortable. This of course made the journey very relaxed and pleasant. However, hygiene was not taken care of as the toilets were unkempt and I found the price a little too high. In addition, the train did not arrive in Stockholm on time. Unfortunately, the wifi connection was also not fast or efficient. So a satisfactory journey!

My journey from Oslo to Stockholm was amazingly good as the staff were extremely friendly. They always took my concerns, interests and problems seriously and always tried to deal with them in the best possible way. They always had a big smile on their faces. The train also arrived in Stockholm on time. They also paid very good attention to hygiene. The toilets were very clean, well-maintained and hygienic. There was no need to change trains, which made the journey much easier as I didn't have to constantly carry my suitcase back and forth. The seats were very comfortable and cosy. The wifi connection on the train was also very efficient. This allowed me to make calls and work on my laptop. However, the volume was not adequate. I found the price expensive and the reservation options complicated. But overall a good journey as the positives outweigh the negatives.

From Oslo to Stockholm by Train: A Couple’s Scandinavian Journey

Introduction

My partner and I, always chasing the next adventure, chose the Oslo to Stockholm train for a romantic escape through Scandinavia’s stunning landscapes. The idea of cozying up together while rolling past forests and lakes was too good to pass up. In this guide, I’ll share our firsthand experience, practical tips, and why this is the best way to get from Oslo to Stockholm for couples craving connection and scenery.

Route Overview

The Oslo to Stockholm train covers 450 kilometers in about 6 hours 30 minutes via SJ’s high-speed service. With 4–5 daily departures, it’s easy to find the best time to travel. The train beats buses or flights for comfort and views, making it the best way to get from Oslo to Stockholm. Still deciding? Compare flights from Oslo to Stockholm on Omio to see why the train wins.

Transportation Experience

Booking our tickets on Omio was effortless. We selected seats, paid, and received our mobile tickets in minutes. We picked the train over a bus for its speed and comfort, perfect for our couple’s getaway. At Oslo Central Station, check-in was a breeze with clear signs and friendly staff.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

We started at Oslo Central Station (Oslo S), a 10-minute walk from downtown Oslo, and stopped at a cozy café for a pre-trip coffee. We arrived at Stockholm Central Station, just 1.6 kilometers from Gamla Stan’s historic charm. Both stations offer Wi-Fi and easy taxi access.

Schedule & Frequency

SJ runs 4–5 trains daily, with the Oslo to Stockholm journey time ranging from 5 hours and 25 minutes to 6 hours and 45 minutes. Our 11:46 AM train was punctual, leaving us with plenty of evening time in Stockholm.

Onboard Experience & Services

Our seats in Second Class were comfy, with big windows showcasing pine forests and lakes. Free Wi-Fi was reliable for sharing trip selfies. The bistro car had coffee and sandwiches, which we savored while planning our evening in Stockholm. Restrooms were clean, and power outlets kept our phones charged. After Karlstad, the views of Lake Vänern stole the show, a must-see on the Oslo to Stockholm train. On this journey, while there isn't a strict weight or size limit, it's recommended that you stick to one bag (maximum dimensions 80x50x35 cm and weight 20 kg) and one small piece of hand luggage.

Romantic Highlights

This journey was a couple’s dream. We shared a blanket, gazed at the Swedish countryside, and stole quiet moments of connection. I recommend booking seats across from each other for easy chats and hand-holding. In Stockholm, wander Gamla Stan’s cobblestone streets or share a fika at a cozy café, pure romance. Check out this Stockholm guide for more couple-friendly ideas.

Trains from Oslo to Stockholm

Anyone who needs to travel between the capitals of Norway and Sweden can easily do so by rail. Every day, SJ schedules at least one direct train from Oslo to Stockholm, and usually offers a couple of direct options. The journey time averages around 5 hours 40 minutes, and trains run straight into the heart of Stockholm, avoiding the need for lengthy transfers.

Oslo to Stockholm train times: Daily departures

There are relatively few options to choose from when booking a train from Oslo to Stockholm, but trains depart every day, so finding a convenient service should be possible. Two direct services leave Oslo from Monday to Saturday, usually with an early morning departure and a service in mid-afternoon (arriving just before 11:00 p.m.). There's one train on Sunday, which generally leaves in the afternoon.

How long is the journey by train from Oslo to Stockholm?

Oslo and Stockholm are around 380 miles apart, so the train journey is relatively long by Scandinavian standards. Travellers can expect a direct train from Oslo to Stockholm to reach the Swedish capital in 5 hours 33 minutes to 5 hours 41 minutes. Indirect bus and train combinations are also available, and can reach Stockholm in just over 6 hours, so may be worth considering as well.

What are the departure and arrival stations for trains from Oslo to Stockholm?

Departure train station: The train from Oslo to Stockholm will always depart from Oslo S Station (also known as Oslo Central). It's a busy station, with shops, eateries, toilets, luggage lockers, and plenty of shopping options nearby. To reach it from the centre of town, travellers can catch tram, metro, or bus services. However, the station is centrally located, so walking shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes.

Arrival train station: Trains from Oslo will arrive at Stockholm's Central Station - a modern and spacious facility that offers essential services such as money exchange, left luggage, toilets, travellers' information, and high-speed WiFi. The old town is just to the south, about 10 minutes' walk away, while onward travel to other Stockholm neighbourhoods is simple thanks to bus and metro connections.

Which train companies travel from Oslo to Stockholm?

Only one train company provides direct rail connections between Oslo and Stockholm, and that's SJ (or 'Statens Järnvägar' in Swedish). However, it's also possible to take hybrid bus and train journeys with Nettbuss (usually with a change in Karlstad).

SJ Oslo to Stockholm

For a train from Oslo to Sweden, SJ is the only option. The Swedish company schedules 1-2 direct services every day, year round. Journey times average around 5 hours 40 minutes, and trains leave on most days in the early morning and mid-afternoon (there are no overnight services).

Oslo to Stockholm trains: Services on board

When booking with SJ, economy or business fares are both available. Business class comes with perks such as free fruit, tea, coffee, and newspapers, exclusive waiting lounges, and more space in general. Economy class is less roomy, but still has WiFi, power sockets, and access to the SJ dining car.

All travellers can take on board as much luggage as they can reasonably carry (or two bags with dimensions 80 cm × 50 cm × 35cm along with a small hand luggage item). Folding bikes can be taken with no extra cost, as can ordinary bikes, provided they are stored in a protective case. Pets are also allowed in certain parts of every train, and two animals can be transported free of charge. A special animal ticket needs to be added to bookings in any case.

Disabled travellers are very welcome with SJ as well. Assistance can be booked 24 hours in advance, and all SJ trains have special seats for wheelchair users. Guide dogs are also permitted anywhere in the train, unlike other pets.

How to find cheap train tickets from Oslo to Stockholm

Train travel between Oslo and Stockholm is comfortable and convenient, but finding ways to save will always be handy. Browsing departure times via Omio is a good idea, as prices can vary between morning and afternoon departures (and if travellers don't mind a change, Nettbus services can sometimes work out cheaper). SJ services can also be cheaper when booked well in advance. However, there are exceptions, such as SJ's Last Minute tickets, which can offer significant savings for short-term bookers. So don't assume that short notice means hefty ticket prices.
