Information about the Nagasaki to Fukuoka train route

The train from Nagasaki to Fukuoka is one of the most convenient and scenic rail connections in Kyushu, linking two of the island's most culturally distinct and historically rich cities. The route runs between Nagasaki Station (1-60 Onouemachi, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture 850-0058) and Hakata Station (1-1 Hakataeki Chuogai, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture 812-0012), the principal railway hub for Fukuoka.

The Nagasaki Shinkansen, officially known as the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, opened in 2022 and transformed this connection, bringing high-speed rail to a region that previously relied entirely on limited express services. The bullet train from Nagasaki to Fukuoka currently operates between Nagasaki and Takeo-Onsen, where passengers transfer to a conventional limited express service for the remainder of the journey into Hakata. This hybrid arrangement is a practical quirk of the route worth knowing before you travel, but it adds little inconvenience in practice and the transfer is well-signposted.

For travelers exploring Kyushu more broadly, this route pairs naturally with visits to Kumamoto, Beppu, or Kagoshima, all of which are accessible from Hakata by Shinkansen or limited express. The combination of Nagasaki's European-influenced harbor history and Fukuoka's modern, food-driven energy makes this one of Kyushu's most rewarding travel pairings.

We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you plan to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.

Nagasaki to Fukuoka by train: what to expect on board

Traveling on the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen is a genuinely impressive experience for a regional line. The かもめ (Kamome) service operates sleek, modern N700S rolling stock, the same advanced series used on the Tokaido Shinkansen, which means a smooth, quiet, and well-appointed ride despite the relatively short high-speed segment.

Seating options

  • Ordinary cars, clean, comfortable reserved and unreserved seating with ample legroom for the journey length. A solid choice for most travelers.
  • Green Car, available on Kamome services, offering wider seats and a quieter carriage. A worthwhile upgrade if you prefer a little extra space and calm.

Best seats for the view

The Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen passes through a largely rural and coastal landscape as it moves northeast through Nagasaki Prefecture. For the most scenic stretches:

  • Sit on the left-hand side of the train (A-side window seats) when traveling from Nagasaki toward Takeo-Onsen to catch glimpses of the Omura Bay coastline as the route curves inland.
  • The early section departing Nagasaki offers pleasant views of the city's hills and port before the line enters tunnel sections.

On-board experience

The Kamome is quiet, punctual, and comfortable. While the high-speed segment does not have a full trolley service, the station at Nagasaki has a solid selection of local bento boxes and snacks to pick up before boarding, look for Nagasaki champon-inspired options or the regional castella cake as a sweet travel companion. The transfer at Takeo-Onsen is smooth and timed to minimize waiting.

Best time of year to travel

  • Spring (late March to early May): Cherry blossoms along the route and in both cities are spectacular. Nagasaki's Glover Garden and Fukuoka's Maizuru Park are particularly popular during this period, book ahead.
  • Autumn (October to November): Mild temperatures and vivid foliage make this one of the most pleasant times to travel Kyushu. Crowds are smaller than in spring.
  • Winter (December to February): Nagasaki's famous Lantern Festival (held during Chinese New Year, typically late January to mid-February) draws large numbers of visitors. The city transforms with thousands of lanterns across the historic Chinatown and harbor area, one of Japan's most atmospheric winter events.
  • Summer (July to August): Warm and humid, but lively. Fukuoka's Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival in early July is one of Japan's great summer celebrations and worth timing a visit around.

Getting to Fukuoka and beyond

Hakata Station is the beating heart of Kyushu's rail network and one of the best-connected stations in western Japan, making onward travel in any direction straightforward from the moment you arrive.

Within Fukuoka

The Fukuoka City Subway connects directly to Hakata Station, with three lines covering the main districts of the city. The Kuko Line links Hakata to Tenjin, Fukuoka's central shopping and dining hub, in just two stops, and continues on to Fukuoka Airport, making this one of the most accessible airports in Japan from a city center. A one-day subway pass is available and worth considering if you plan to move around the city extensively.

Day trips and regional connections

Hakata's position at the western end of the Sanyo Shinkansen and the hub of the Kyushu Shinkansen network makes it an ideal base for wider exploration:

  • Kumamoto, approximately 35 minutes by Kyushu Shinkansen, with the iconic reconstructed Kumamoto Castle as the headline attraction.
  • Hiroshima, around 1 hour by Nozomi Shinkansen (JR Pass holders should use the Sakura or Hikari services).
  • Beppu and Oita, accessible via the Sonic limited express from Hakata, known for its hot spring resorts.
  • Kagoshima-Chuo, around 1 hour 20 minutes by Kyushu Shinkansen, the southern terminus of the high-speed line, near Sakurajima volcano.
  • Busan, South Korea, the Beetle or Kobee high-speed ferry operates from Hakata Port, making an international day trip genuinely feasible.

Your JR Pass covers the Kyushu Shinkansen and most limited express services on the island, meaning Hakata serves as an excellent springboard for an extended Kyushu itinerary after arriving from Nagasaki.

What to expect when you arrive in Fukuoka

Hakata Station (1-1 Hakataeki Chuogai, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City) is a vast, modern complex that functions as a shopping destination, dining hub, and transport interchange all at once. The station building, known commercially as JR Hakata City, houses department stores, a rooftop garden, and a wide range of restaurants, meaning there is every reason to linger before heading out into the city.

Practical information at the station

  • Tourist information: The Fukuoka Tourist Information Center is located on the first floor of Hakata Station, near the Hakata Exit, and provides English-language maps, transport guidance, and city event information.
  • Luggage storage: Coin lockers of various sizes are available throughout the station. For bulkier bags, luggage forwarding services at the station can send items directly to your hotel or onward destination, particularly useful if you plan to explore the city before checking in.
  • Currency and connectivity: Japan Post and convenience store ATMs inside the station reliably accept international cards. Free Wi-Fi is available across the station building.

Arriving in Fukuoka for the first time

Fukuoka has a well-earned reputation as one of Japan's most liveable and welcoming cities, with a compact layout that makes it easy to navigate on foot, by subway, or by the city's cheerful street-level tram. The Nakasu district, a narrow island between two rivers lined with restaurants, bars, and the famous open-air yatai food stalls, is just a short subway ride from Hakata and a natural first stop for any visitor arriving hungry.

The Tenjin district to the west is Fukuoka's commercial and cultural center, while the historic Hakata neighborhood surrounding the station is home to several significant temples including Tochoji and Kushida Shrine, both easily walkable from the station exit. Taxis are plentiful at the Hakata Exit for those who prefer a direct transfer, and the city's compact geography means most major sights are within a 20-minute journey from the station by any means of transport.
