I travelled from Madrid to Malaga by train with my girlfriend in June and was absolutely delighted with my journey. The staff were super friendly, the train was super clean and I still had enough legroom on the train despite being 1.90 metres tall. It was also very easy to find the platform at Madrid station, which made the journey very pleasant. I can only recommend this journey.
Advantages
IconPunctuality
Disadvantages
IconNone at all
The journey was really nice. The train was very punctual. In addition, the staff were always available to answer any questions. The wifi on the train was great and I think I recognised that everyone on the train felt very comfortable. The price-performance ratio was perfect. The sanitary facilities were very clean. Overall, I give it 5 stars and my personal recommendation.
Advantages
IconPredominantly clean
Disadvantages
IconSevere delay
Let me start by saying that the train was once again very late. The journey took a little less than three hours. Most places on the train were reasonably clean. In contrast to the return journey, I seem to remember very friendly staff. I travelled on the Renfe AVE 02152 train and this time the journey earned my recommendation and 4 stars. The internet was fine.
Advantages
IconPersonnel
Disadvantages
IconHygiene
I review the journey positively. The positives of the journey definitely include that the staff were very helpful, that the train was on time and that there was a fast network connection. Unfortunately, the negative points were that it was neither particularly clean nor comfortable. The price-performance ratio was nevertheless optimal, which is also the reason for my recommendation.

Train number 6148 departed from Madrid to Málaga at 15:07 on 17 July. The journey went smoothly. The journey took around two and a half hours. The train was clean and the toilets were hygienic. The staff on the train were very nice and helpful and were able to answer all my questions. There is also free wifi and power sockets, as well as food that you can buy.

IconFood prices on the train were too high
The train journey from Madrid to Málaga was a very interesting journey. Especially because the train was well equipped. The seats were very comfortable, the toilets were clean and there were working sockets. The journey went by quickly. There was a food trolley every hour. The staff in the food car were nice, but the prices of the food were very high. It was very quiet during the journey

The journey took about 2 hours and 50 minutes. During this time, I had enough time to admire the excellent cleanliness and hygiene, use the good network by working on a project and simply switch off on the comfortable benches. The station in Madrid was a bit dirty, but that's not unusual. Hence five out of five possible stars.
Advantages
IconHygienic
In fact, I only had positive impressions of the journey. These include the punctuality, helpfulness and friendliness of the staff, as well as the cleanliness and hygiene of the sanitary facilities. I travelled on train number 02123 and there was no need to change trains. The duration of my journey from Madrid to Malaga was almost 3 hours. I give it a recommendation.

I recently took the AVE 2713 train from Madrid to Málaga and the experience was excellent. The journey time of 3 hours was incredibly quick and made the journey very efficient. The direct connection was particularly pleasant, eliminating the need to change trains and providing extra comfort. The train was on time and left nothing to be desired: spacious, comfortable seats, a quiet atmosphere and friendly on-board staff. The passing scenery - from wide open fields to picturesque hills - was a real highlight. A perfect choice for a relaxed and carefree journey. Absolutely recommendable!

Man, what a journey! The AVE #2112 from Madrid to Malaga really blew me away. I was sceptical about the route at first, but it was awesome! Top! We started exactly as planned and even arrived early. The speed was amazing - you almost felt like you were on an aeroplane, only much more comfortable. The seats were a blast - so comfortable that I nodded off. And the internet? It was awesome! I was able to surf all the time without interruption. But the highlight was the view. Andalusia is simply breathtaking. Olive trees stretching to the horizon and then these mountains - I couldn't stop marvelling. The crew were great too. When my stomach growled, they recommended a snack that was really tasty. To summarise: this train journey was a real experience. Flying is dead for me - the AVE #2112 gets me to my destination relaxed and with a view. A clear recommendation from me!

Train from Madrid to Malaga

Introduction

I love exploring my home country, and one of the best ways to do it is by train. You can simply relax while taking in the scenery. My latest train journey was from Madrid to Malaga, and it was a great trip. In this guide, I will share my experience and give you insider tips to make the most of your journey. Read on to discover why the train is a fantastic way to get from Madrid to Malaga.

Route Overview

The Madrid to Malaga train on Omio is a fantastic option because it’s fast, comfortable, and so convenient. It leaves from Madrid-Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes and arrives at Málaga María Zambrano, which is a short walk from the Málaga City Center.

The bus from Madrid to Malaga, as well as car journeys from Madrid to Malaga, take over 5 hours and 30 minutes, whereas the train takes an average of just 2 hours and 58 minutes.

I also love that the train ride goes through some scenic parts, so you don’t miss out on that either. Therefore, I think it’s fair to say that the train is the best way to get from Madrid to Malaga.

Tropical garden inside Madrid Atocha station

Transportation Experience

I booked my trip with Omio, and it couldn’t have been easier. I simply entered my destination, and it came up with the best options. I could see the best prices and times at a glance. Once I bought my ticket, I instantly received it in my email, but I highly recommend using the app because you have the tickets on your phone (even offline).

I arrived at Madrid Atocha with plenty of time so that I could check the beautiful tropical garden, and wasn’t rushing, as the station is quite big. After this, I went through security, checked the souvenir shops, and made my way to the gate.

Route Details

Madrid Atocha is not far from the city center, so you can either take the underground or a taxi. You have everything you need before taking the train, from cafés to souvenir shops and spacious toilets (including some for disabled travelers). You can also find luggage storage and a water filling station.

Since it’s inside the Vialia shopping center, María Zambrano Station also has good amenities. You have supermarkets, cafés, restaurants and the metro, too. In case you aren’t staying in a town near Malaga, the station is next to Malaga bus station, which is very convenient.

Regarding train schedules and frequency, there are approximately 20 direct trains from Madrid to Malaga every day, and they are usually punctual. Mine was almost on time.

Onboard Experience & Services

I traveled second class, and the experience was fantastic. The trains have comfortable and spacious seats, tray tables, Wi-Fi and power sockets. I actually had to do some work, so I was relieved to have internet. There’s also enough space for your luggage. You can bring up to three pieces—just keep the size and weight allowance in mind.

Other amenities include toilets, which are regularly cleaned, and a café. Alternatively, get a snack from the comfort of your seat with the mobile bar service. Another highlight of the train from Madrid to Malaga is the views. I love the beautiful hilly scenery, especially when we approached Cordoba province.

Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown

I booked a regular fare train ticket and managed to get a good price, mostly because I got my tickets in advance and was able to compare the best options with Omio. I paid €49 for my train ticket, but it was slightly more expensive due to the time of the year (late summer).

Here is a budget breakdown:

Item Cost (EUR)
AVE/Renfe AVLO/Ouigo (regular ticket) from €35
Taxi to Madrid Atocha €10
Taxi from Maria Zambrano to Malaga City Center €8

Top Tips & Personal Recommendations

  • Book your train tickets in advance. It makes a difference, and the easiest way to get them is with the Omio app.
  • Arrive early at Atocha train station. It’s quite big and there are two stations: the old and the new. Make sure you follow the signs to get to the right gate.
  • If you are on a budget, consider packing your own food.
  • Take in the scenic views. The mountain landscapes are beautiful.
  • Once in Malaga, consider taking the metro rather than a taxi. It works out cheaper and is faster.
  • Last but not least, spend more than a day in Malaga. My hometown has plenty of beautiful things to do and see beyond going to the beach.
