Bordeaux to Paris: 320 km/h on France’s Fastest High-Speed Line

Introduction

This is the true high-speed experience: riding the French flagship train on France’s FASTEST route! In just over two hours, frequent, modern high-speed trains connect Bordeaux, famous for its wine and oysters, to the French capital in unmatchable style, especially when you opt for a first-class ticket, as I did! Let’s go for a ride.

Route Overview

The train is operated by TGV InOui, the flagship brand of French state railway company SNCF. The train runs on the LGV (ligne à grande vitesse or high-speed line) Sud Europe Atlantique and LGV Atlantique for its entire route, often nonstop. On direct services, SNCF only runs trains with their latest interior, named Océane, and the route will be the first to see the brand-new TGV M trains, set to be introduced in late 2025.

A red and white TGV train at the platform in Bordeaux St Jean Station.

Many trains from Bordeaux to Paris depart every day, all available on the Omio app. I booked TGV 8508, the 12:46 departure to Paris Montparnasse, which reaches the capital in 2 hours and 10 minutes. The total distance is 537 kilometers (334 miles).

Transportation Experience

In France, you must book your tickets well in advance. Long-distance trains require a reservation and can quickly sell out or become very expensive. Trains go on sale two to three months prior to departure, except if you intend to travel during a holiday period, in which case, all tickets for said period will go on sale on the same date (generally advertised by SNCF). Booking Bordeaux–Paris train tickets on Omio two months before your travel date is my recommendation to find the best fare for your journey, especially on this extremely popular route.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

Bordeaux’s main railway terminal Bordeaux Saint-Jean, accessible via the city’s tram network at the stop Gare Saint-Jean, is located not far from the city center. An impressive structure, it may seem hard to navigate at first, so make sure you arrive in good time!

A grand view of the outside of Bordeaux Saint-Jean Station with its historic facade.

In Paris, the train will drop you off at Paris Montparnasse. The station is well connected to the rest of Paris via four metro lines, as well as bus line 91, which can get you to most other Parisian rail terminals (Austerlitz, Lyon, Est, Nord directly, and a 10-minute walk from Bercy).

Schedule & Frequency

There are very frequent TGV services to Paris. Some trains take longer than others, as they call at more stations. The premium TGV InOui offering is also supplemented by Ouigo, a low-cost high-speed train service. The last train leaves at 20:49 on weekdays.

Onboard Experience & Services

All nonstop TGVs on this route are either new or refurbished, and all contain the “Océane” interior. This has reduced the quantity of bay seating in favor of more airline-style seating. In First Class, seats are in a 2+1 configuration and have a good recline. They feature plugs, including USB, at every seat, as well as reading lights and very large tables that can fit even the largest laptops. The winged headrest is a much-appreciated feature, perfect for sleeping, which is easy with the train’s excellent ride quality. Large racks for luggage are located at both ends and in the middle of every coach. But be aware that the overhead racks are very small, especially on the top deck. There is decent enough Wi-Fi, although the connection can be a bit patchy on this route.

The spacious First Class seating area on a TGV Duplex train, with a 2+1 seat configuration.

Trains on this route are double-deck. I recommend riding on the upper deck for better views but on the lower deck (only in First Class) for peace and quiet. The train features a “Bistro TGV InOui” where you can buy meals, snacks, and drinks. The menu varies seasonally, but the food is of good quality and very tasty, albeit quite pricey.

Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown

Fares are dynamic and increase with demand, so be sure to book in advance! I booked about three weeks before departure on the Omio app and paid €57. This isn’t the cheapest price, but very reasonable for First Class! Fares start from €39.

Item Cost (EUR)
Train ticket (First Class Bordeaux to Paris) €57.00
Total €57.00

Top Tips & Personal Recommendations

  • Book in advance because trains sell out very fast, especially in peak and holiday periods.
  • Arrive early at the station to find your way and also to admire the stunning building!
  • If you want to purchase food from the Bistro, order it online via the TGV portal (accessed via the train Wi-Fi) and then collect it at the Bistro without queuing.

Conclusion

This is one of the most used train routes in France, and it is clear that SNCF has made a lot of effort to make the journeys as enjoyable as possible. First Class is generally just €5-10 extra compared to Second Class, although no complimentary service is included. Maybe you could treat yourself?
