About Ouigo
Ouigo is a train service that focuses on low-cost, high-speed, no fuss travel, drawing comparisons to budget airlines. It’s headquartered in France and is owned by Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF), France’s national railway company. Ouigo works out of 18 stations throughout France, including several train stations in Paris, and it also operates in Spain under the Ouigo España brand.
Ouigo is a popular choice with travellers because it offers competitive pricing and a multitude of routes.

Daily Ouigo Train Departures
Ouigo trains call in at 18 stations and cover dozens of routes covering both conventional and high-speed trains. The company runs around 50 trains every day, so there’s always a Ouigo on the tracks somewhere.
It’s not just France, either. Ouigo España launched in May 2021 and within a year, it had carried more than 2 million passengers. It runs 5 daily journeys on the popular Madrid-Barcelona route, and in 2022, it announced new high-speed routes between Madrid and popular locations like Alicante, Valencia, and Albacete.
Ouigo: The Different Tickets
There is only one ticket type available on Ouigo trains. As a result, all passengers are offered the same level of service. However, there are a few optional extras that you can add to your ticket when making a Ouigo train reservation. Many of these are available for a small additional fee:
- Text Alert: : Receive a text notification containing the platform number and other details
- Electrical Outlet: : If checked, this option will give you access to an electrical outlet you can use to charge your devices.
- Extra Baggage: : Carry up to two additional items of luggage on the train.
- Pram/Buggy: : You are allowed to take a pram on board, but only if you indicate it while making your Ouigo train reservation. The pram must also be folded away before you board the train.
- Quiet Seating: : There is a quieter area of the train. For a small fee, you can choose to sit here if you need to work, rest, or nap.
- Pets: : If your pet is less than 6KG, you can carry them on as luggage. If not, you’ll need to purchase a special ticket for them.

Ouigo: Services on Board
Ouigo trains are very basic when compared to other train services. That’s why they are able to offer a fast and efficient service at such a competitive cost. For instance, you won’t find a buffet carriage on a Ouigo train and there is no First Class section, either.
Everyone is in the same “class”, and if you want food and drinks, you will need to stock up before getting on the train.
Here are a few other things you need to know about services on Ouigo trains:
- Toilets: You will find toilets on Ouigo trains and they all have easy access.
- No WiFi: There is also no WiFi service offered on Ouigo trains. However, most journeys are completed in just an hour or two, so you don’t need to go without service for very long.
- Baggage Options: Ouigo luggage rules are very generous and allow for two items. You can also take bikes and prams, providing they are folded and carried.
- Ouigo Plus: A premium service that includes benefits such as Choose your Seat and Fast Track, the latter of which lets you board the train just 5 minutes before it leaves, as opposed to the usual 30 minutes.

Travel Sustainably with Ouigo Trains
The simplicity, efficiency, and rapidity of Ouigo make for a very eco-friendly package when compared to many alternatives.
For instance, all of Ouigo’s tickets are sold online, negating the need for printed tickets and ticket booths. They also remove non-essential carriages (including buffets and bars) and cram more seats onto the trains. In addition, by offering some of the most competitive rates on the market, they provide a valid alternative to air travel and car journeys, both of which have a much larger carbon footprint.
Ouigo’s parent company, SNCF, has taken great strides toward improving the efficiency and sustainability of its services over the years. It is always looking at ways to reduce its carbon footprint, including greener driving practices and greener energy consumption.

Why are Ouigo Train Tickets so Cheap?
There are several reasons that Ouigo can afford to keep its prices so low.
The first is that it operates stripped-back trains, focusing on speed and simplicity as opposed to any luxuries like bars and buffets. You can still eat and drink on the train, but you must take your own food and beverages.
Secondly, there is no First Class and Second Class. It’s all one, and this allows them to keep the trains near capacity at all times. Combined with the fact that Ouigo is a huge company operating across dozens of stations, it means they can play the numbers game and keep profits high while margins stay low.
You’re still getting a brilliant service for your money and you’ll also be arriving at your destination quickly and without fuss. But if you want a drink, you’ll have to take it onboard; if you want extra baggage or a plug socket, you’ll need to pay extra.

Does the Ouigo Train Offer Special Services During the Journey?
Ouigo doesn’t have First Class. It doesn’t have beds, buffet carriages, or bars. It keeps everything very simple and focuses on speed, efficiency, and cost instead. The result is a train that’s comfortable, a ticket that doesn’t cost the earth, and a promise that you’ll arrive quickly.
In the end, that’s all that really matters.
