Ethiopian Airlines History

Ethiopian Airlines was set up way back in 1945 and begun operations in 1946 with a flight from Ethiopia to Cairo. In 1984, the airline began using its first Boeing 747, and even set a record for the longest distance travelled by a commercial passenger jet with a flight to New York in the same year. In the present day, Ethiopian Airlines transports over 6 million passengers every year. In addition to these passenger flights, this airline is also responsible for a large number of cargo flights. Ethiopian Airlines is the flag carrying airline of Ethiopia, and its official, international airline.

The main airport from which Ethiopian Airlines operates is Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. The route between Addis Ababa and Cairo remains popular, but in the present day Ethiopian Airlines also offers flights to a number of destinations throughout the world, including Beijing, London and Paris.

Ethiopian Airlines offers services to suit all kinds of travellers, from people flying economy to habitual business travellers. Food and drinks are offered free to passengers on board Ethiopian Airlines flights, no matter what class of ticket they have. There is also in flight entertainment on Ethiopian Airlines flights. Some, but not all, airports offer lounges or specialised waiting areas for passengers who are flying with Ethiopian Airlines. At Bole International Airport, there are two lounges to choose from: Cloud 9 and the more luxurious Sheba Miles Lounge.
