Before you travel to Eindhoven by plane - good to know!

Eindhoven is a city with many secrets, well known by locals and less so to outsiders. One is that there's a wide array of fascinating museums. Van Abbemuseum is an art gallery with a seriously good collection including works by Picasso, Chagall and Mondrian. Philips First Incandescent Lamp Factory of 1891 is the long name of a small museum celebrating the city's main claim to fame as the home of the first factory of the Dutch multinational Philips. The best way to travel around Eindhoven is as locals do: by bike, available to rent from the railway station. There's an extensive bus network, too. Save money by buying what the Dutch call an "OV-chipkaart", a plastic card on which credit can be loaded for numerous journeys. They're available from vending machines at the railway station and bus company offices.

How to Get to Eindhoven by Plane

Despite Eindhoven Airport currently ranking as the second-busiest in the Netherlands, direct flights to Eindhoven from the United Kingdom are limited to only a few routes. Ryanair run a regular direct service from London Stansted, Glasgow and Dublin. KLM flights to Eindhoven can be caught from London City Airport. An indirect route can also be taken by flying to Amsterdam in the first instance and then on to the city of Eindhoven. Located just five miles from the city centre, Eindhoven Airport has two bus services which operate in-between here and Eindhoven itself. In addition, a shuttle bus links the airport to the main train station. Taxis are available from the main terminal, with a journey to the city taking roughly twenty minutes.

Eindhoven

Located in the south of the country, the Dutch city of Eindhoven is a pleasant mixture of old and new, with futuristic structures such as the mushroom-shaped Evoluon standing near to centuries-old Gothic churches. Much of the city's economic history has been dominated by the presence of electronics giant Philips. Founded here as a light bulb manufacturer in 1891, Philips was the spur for Eindhoven's growth as a major industrial player in the Netherlands. When in Eindhoven today, be sure to visit Philips' very first light bulb factory, the Incandescent Lamp Factory of 1891, which is now a fascinating little museum. In a similar vein, the DAF museum holds a generous collection of trucks and cars made by the famous DAF motor company.

Despite its industrial heritage, Eindhoven still has a number of picturesque parks and open spaces. The City Walking Park is just minutes from the centre and is host to a variety of artistic sculptures.
