Buses from Vilnius to Riga run all day, and take around four hours to complete the journey - although this can vary slightly. Usually, there are two or three services per hour, giving passengers loads of choice.
The bus from Vilnius to Riga takes in the region of four hours. Some journeys can be completed in less than that, with some providers offering around three hours and 50 minutes. Others take longer, and a journey time of closer to four and a half hours could be expected. Most buses running between these two Baltic capital cities do not require changes in major intermediate cities such as Panevėys.
For most hours of the day, the bus from Vilnius to Riga operates several times per hour. It is not uncommon, for example, for a bus to depart on the hour and for another to go as little as 10 minutes or half an hour later. Buses from Vilnius to Riga start at about 2:30 a.m. in the middle of the night, with that service arriving in Riga at around 6:30 a.m. Daytime buses often begin around 6:45 a.m., and arrive in Riga just before 11:00 a.m or thereabouts. In terms of final buses of the day, this is often at approximately 10:45 p.m. - with an arrival time in Riga of around 2:30 a.m.
Departure bus station: Vilnius has many outward bus stops. Many buses from Vilnius to Riga, however, leave from the Autobusų Stotis in the centre of the city. This is near the railway station and is very close to a branch of McDonald's. Vilnius Old Town is just a 13-minute walk away.
Arrival bus station: There are several bus stations in Riga, but most buses conveniently go to a key central street called Prāgas Iela where the Starptautiskā Autoosta or central bus station is. This is located close to several backpacker hostels and is around the corner from the Centrāltirgus and Prāgas iela tram stops for onward connections.
There are lots of different provides on the route running buses from Vilnius to Riga. One such provider is Lux Express, which tends to operate the fastest services on the route at around 3 hours and 45 minutes in some cases. Ecolines also provides services, and while it does run a small number of very fast services, it tends to be slower. And some services are also offered by TOKS, which is associated with Eurolines. No providers require passengers to change buses.
Lux Express offers services which are express in nature, including one overnight service which can complete the route in approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes. Buses offered by this service are direct.
Ecolines offers some services which are under four hours, but most of its services take longer than that - in some cases almost four hours and 25 minutes. If a passenger is travelling with this provider, however, they will not have to change.
The TOKS service from Eurolines does not run many services on this route at all. On some occasions, it runs just one service a day, and this tends to be one of the longest of all the options at over four and a half hours. But once again this provider does not require passengers to change buses at any point.
When on the bus from Vilnius to Riga, LuxExpress has a number of disabled passenger policies, with dogs only permitted provided they are guide dogs for those with visual impairments - although no other animals are permitted on international routes with this provider. According to the LuxExpress website, there is some business class availability. There is a hand luggage weight limit in place, and that is currently set at 5 kg - and bikes are only allowed if space permits.
Buses from Vilnius to Riga which are run by Ecolines, meanwhile, share similar policies on luggage with an identical weight limit to LuxExpress in terms of hand luggage. There is no clear policy on business class travel. If a passenger is disabled, Ecolines requests that they let the firm know about this a week in advance - or, ideally, earlier. Neither animals nor birds are permitted, and the drinking of alcohol is also forbidden. Cyclists can bring bikes on board, but permission is required.
TOKS is associated with Eurolines, which permits luggage for the hold and also one piece of carry-on luggage size as long as it is under the maximum weight of 7 kg. Business class, which offers free WiFi, is available on this route. No pets are allowed, and disabled passengers are requested to bring a helper who can claim a half-price ticket. Only folding bikes are permitted.
