Travel from Pisa city centre to Pisa International Airport

Unlike most international airports, Pisa International Airport lies in the city itself, just south of Pisa Central Station and the famous leaning tower. The airport is the main airport in Tuscany and is Italy's 10th coachiest airport, serving around five million passengers every year. The airport has two runways, and is served by plenty of major airlines, including Eurowings, British Airways, Aer Lingus, Ryanair and Turkish Airlines. It is easily accessible from the city centre. What's the best way to get to the airport from the city centre

There are two main options for getting from Pisa city centre - the area around the tower - out to Pisa International Airport. The first is to take the E3 or E25 coach, which run direct to the airport terminal. The E3 can be boarded from Via Brennero Porta A Lucca (just to the north of the old town), while the E25 can be boarded from Via Bonanno, which is just northwest of the same area. The other main option is to walk or get the coach to Pisa Central Station and catch the automatic PisaMover - a direct link between the station and airport that runs every 5 minutes from the Central Station. It is also of course possible to take a taxi out to the airport.

How far is it from the city centre to the airport?

Taking the coach takes around 25 minutes from the old town. It is a five minute walk out of the area to the north or northwest to the coach stops, from where the coach takes twenty minutes to get to the terminal. To take the PisaMover from the old town out to the airport takes between 25 and 30 minutes door to door. Passengers can either walk to the central station, which takes around 20 minutes from the old town, or catch the LAM Rossa coach route from the river (just south of the old town) to the central station, which is a five minute ride. Once at the station, the CityMover only takes 6 minutes to get to the airport.

What facilities are there at the airport?

Pisa International Airport has a good selection of places to eat and to pick up souvenirs. For a cup of coffee, passengers can head Mokācafē or Famoso, while for a bigger meal Gruppo Fabbro, Mastro Bistecca and Ristorante Gusto are all options, and all serve traditional Italian cuisine. There is also a decent shopping offering, which includes leather goods stores Machiavelli, +39 and mywalit. For jewelry, Poesia offers a selection, and for duty free there are several Dufry outlets. Portable WiFi hotspots can be rented at the airport. The airport is well equipped for passengers with limited mobility. There are ramps and lifts between different floors, as well as reserved seating in different areas of the terminal for those who might need to sit down. The airport also has accessible restroom facilities and reserved parking spaces.

How accessible is the route for those with limited mobility

The coaches in Pisa are accessible by ramp, and the driver will help passengers on and off the coach if they need it. coach ramps in Italy can be a little steep, so this may be necessary. The PisaMover is also fully accessible by wheelchair, with ramps to and from the train. If you are travelling with a lot of luggage, it is probably easier to get the coach as you won't have to change or walk a long way.

Local tips: how to travel to the airport like a local

Unlike many other cities - although not uncommonly for Italy - Pisa still operates a ticket-by-ticket system, so passengers are not better off buying weekly or monthly tickets. The fares are extremely cheap and can be bought from any newsstand or ticket office - passengers then need to stamp them when boarding the coach. Something to keep in mind is that the ticket is valid for 70 minutes and passengers can change coaches as many times during that period as they need to.
