Major Train Stations in Spain
Operating on a four gauge rail network, trains provide fast and reliable connections throughout much of Spain. Whether by high speed AVE trains, which are some of the fastest in the world, between main cities or local regional trains to more rural destinations, trains are a very popular way to travel around the country. The major train stations in Spain include Madrid Atocha, Barcelona - Sants station, Valencia-North Station, Santa Justa Station, and Zaragoza-Delicias Station.
Madrid Atocha Station
Also named Madrid Puerta de Atocha, this station is the largest in the capital city of Madrid, and one of the busiest in the country serving around 88 million passengers each year. Commuter trains, regional trains from the south and intercity trains all run to and from this station, as well as the AVE high speed trains to Seville, Barcelona, Zaragoza and Valencia. The main train provider is Renfe, which is a major national rail company. Facilities you can expect to find at this station include information desks (with Spanish and English service), ticket pick-up points, restroom facilities, left luggage services, restaurants and shops as well as the Tropical Garden of Janus, a green area with over 500 different species of plants and animals.
Barcelona-Sants Station
Another major railway station in Spain, Barcelona-Sants provides the most important rail connections to France, especially since 2008, when the Sants Station was integrated within the framework of the AVE high speed trains. Currently, the station receives about 30 million passengers per year and is a major commuter hub. The station has a large ticket hall with information points, a luxury hotel, restaurants and shops, and has accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility.
Valencia North Station
Despite not being connected to the AVE, this station still offers a number of long-distance journeys with Talgo trains. Estació del Nord is the largest station in the city of Valencia and one of the busiest in the country with annual traffic of around 14 million passengers. The station is listed as a Heritage Site of Cultural Interest, and some of the facilities you can expect here include a ticket hall with information points, toilets, restaurants and shops, telephones and accessibility assistance.
Station Santa Justa
The Andalusian was the first station to receive high speed services from Madrid in 1992. This is currently one of the main stations in the country with about 8 million passengers annually, operating commuter trains, regional, long-distance and high-speed AVE journeys. The Santa Justa train station also offers direct access to Joaquin Sorolla Valencia and Barcelona-Sants.
Zaragoza-Delicias Station
With about 3 million passengers per year, mainly for regional and long-distance journeys, Delicias Station has become a major hub, especially as a connection point of the AVE from Madrid to Barcelona and France. Since opening in 2003 it has received several awards for its architecture and design.
