Major Airports in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is home to 5 major airports. The largest by far is the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which is among the biggest in Europe. Some of the smaller airports in the country still running scheduled passenger flights include Eindhoven Airport, Rotterdam The Hague Airport, Maastricht Aachen Airport and Groningen Airport.
Schiphol Airport
Schiphol Airport is extremely convenient to get to, located less than 20 km from the capital and served by the Dutch rail provider NS which connects to Amsterdam Central Station in just 15 minutes. Schiphol is the fourth largest airport in Europe in terms of passengers. Flights from Schiphol are operated by nearly 100 different airlines which serve destinations all over the world. The airport is a hub for low-cost airlines easyJet and Vueling, and operates as a European hub for Delta Air Lines. It also serves as the primary base for the flag-carrying airline KLM as well as ArkeFly Corendon, Transavia and KLM. Schiphol has just one terminal which is divided into three departure halls. The airport boasts over 200 different shops and eateries, along with two hotels, a wellness facility and a branch of Holland Casino. Since 2002 it's also housed a permanent collection and several temporary exhibitions from the National Museum. Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal.
Eindhoven Airport
Eindhoven Airport is a hub for a number of European low-cost airlines. The airport's located about 8 km west of Eindhoven, and is easily reached by NS train from Amsterdam via Utrecht in about 1.5 hours. Though it's the second largest airport in the Netherlands, it serves just a fraction of the passengers travelling through Schiphol - some 4 million compared to over 50 million. A number of major international airlines fly from the airport, including Transavia, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Corendon. In the summer, a number of other airlines also operate charter flights to popular holiday destinations such as Jetairfly, Onur Air, Thomas Cook and Arkefly. In total, Eindhoven Airport offers routes to more than 70 destinations. The airport has one runway and one terminal building which was expanded in 2013 to enable it to accommodate 5 million passengers each year, including the addition of more check-in counters and several new shops.
Rotterdam The Hague Airport
Rotterdam The Hague Airport handles around 1 million travellers each year, primarily those flying with the many low-cost airlines that operate from the airport. The main airlines serving the airport are Transavia and CityJet, though Lufthansa and British Airways also offer connections to London, and Turkish Airlines has been operating flights to Istanbul since 2004. Its location in the Randstad and proximity to Amsterdam make it fairly convenient to fly to/from. The airport is well connected by public transport, with the bus 33 journeying between the airport and Rotterdam Central Station. There is also a shuttle bus that runs to the metro station at Meijersplein, which is well connected to the rest of the city.
