Major Airports in Germany

Germany is home to almost 30 major commercial airports, in addition to a number of smaller airfields for businesses and aviation; providing air travel to almost 250 million passengers annually. The main airports in Germany include Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Berlin Tegel, Hamburg and Stuttgart, all of which serve domestic and international flights.

Frankfurt Airport

Frankfurt Airport is the busiest and biggest airport in Germany and 3rd in Europe after London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle. In 2013, it served over 58 million passengers, flying to 264 destinations in 113 countries with approximately 136 flights per day, meaning that Frankfurt Airport is connected to most international destinations in the world. However, expansions will be necessary if the airport continues to grow as it currently is, as the airport is serving 65 millions yearly, clost to capacity. As the largest airport in Germany, it is served by numerous international airlines, serving as a hub for AeroLogic, Condor, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City Line and Lufthansa Cargo. It is also an important airport for major German airlines such as SunExpress Deutschand and TUIfly. In order to service such a high volume of passengers, Frankfurt Airport has a large number of great facilities within its three terminals. These include a wide variety of eateries, shops, duty free items and travel agencies.

Munich Airport

Munich Airport recently overtook Düsseldorf as the 2nd busiest airport in Germany, with an annual flow of 38 million passengers. In 2014, Munich Airport was named 'Europe's best Airport' by Skytrax and is currently an important hub for such German airlines as Air Berlin, SunExpress Deutschand and TUIfly, as well as Air Dolomiti, Condor, Lufthansa and Lufthansa CityLine. This association with the Italian airline, Air Dolomiti, has granted the airport the nickname of 'Italy's Most Northerly Airport', with almost 400 flights per week flying there at peak season. Munich is also renowned for its dining options within the airport, with over 45 different eateries on site.
