Costa del Sol, or the Sun Coast, is the coastline of the Malaga province. Stretching 150km, it is one of Spain's most popular tourist destinations for both families and young adults. The coast is home to a number of popular destinations such as picturesque white walled villages and enchanting caves, although the area's sunny climate and beaches are what draws in visitors.

About Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol is a region located in the south of Spain. Its main city is Malaga and is also home to the popular towns of Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara, Estepona, Manilva, Casares, Rincon de la Victoria, Velez-Málaga, Nerja, Frigiliana and Torrox.

Climate

The average temperature in Costa del Sol is around 19 ºC and has more than 300 sunny days per year. Malaga enjoys the warmest winters in Europe, with average temperatures of 17.2C during the months of December to February.

Language

The offical language spoken in Costa del Sol is Spanish.

Getting to Costa del Sol

Malaga is well connected by train from many other main destinations in Spain. The popular beach resorts of Benalmadena, Fuengirola y Torremolinos can be accessed by local trains from Malaga. The main railway station is Maria Zambrano. Trains are usually direct from large cities to Malaga and depart several times a day.
The Avanza group operates services throughout Spain including the towns and villages of the Costa del Sol and Cadiz. Malaga's main bus station is situated on Paseo de los Tilos.

Train

Train is one of the best options to move around Costa del Sol. The trains that depart from Malaga Airport - Fuengirola runs along the south-east of Costa del Sol and has great views.

Places to Visit

Frigiliana

Medieval Frigiliana is a typical white village of Costa del Sol perched on a ridge in the hills east of Malaga. Guarded by the impressive remains of the ninth-century Moorish Lizar Castle, the village offers far-reaching panoramas towards the Mediterranean coast.

El Caminito del Rey (The King's path)

The King's Walkway is pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Ardales in the province of Malaga. The walkway was built to provide workers at the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gait Anejo Falls with means to cross between them.

Nerja Caves

The enormous prehistoric Caves of Nerja boast stunning views, archaeological remains and the world’s largest column, standing at 32 meters high. Entering the cave, you’ll see dramatically lit stalactites and stalagmites, and evidence of human habitation stretching back 25,000 years to the Paleolithic era. Galleries display artifacts, paintings, and skeletons that unearthed when the caves were discovered in 1959.

Horse Riding

One of the most popular activities in Costa del Sol is horse riding and there are many riding schools where you can learn or improve your skills with lessons or going out to explore the landscape. If you would rather watch instead of ride, Costa del Sol is home to the horse races of Pura Raza Espanola.

Surfing

In the last few years surfing in Costa del Sol has become increasingly popular. There are many surf schools and beaches where waves and wind is great for beginners. Two of the best beaches for surfing are El Chanquete and Artola Cabopino.

Hot Air Balloon Rides

Those who are not afraid of heights can enjoy an air balloon ride over the Serrania de Ronda or Antequera, giving stunning views, perfect for watching the sunset.

Malaga Film Festival is an annual film festival held in Malaga, Spain. The festival was established to promote Spanish cinema and help disseminate information about Spanish films.

August Fair

The annual Malaga city fair in August is an exuberant week-long street party with plenty of flamenco and 'fino', a type of sherry.The fair commemorates the re-conquest of the city by Isabella and Ferdinand in 1487 and traditionally runs for seven days on the third week in August.

Santo Domingo de Guzmán Fair

This fair is extremely popular with tourists, and is important to the locals. The festival is deeply rooted in popular tradition and the whole village takes to the street dressed as moors and Christians, in a street theatre which resembles the days of the Mudejar uprising of 1501 in Sierra Bermeja and which has two extremely important moments: “The Captivity" and "The Rescue".
