Wroclaw

Wroclaw is the capital of the Lower Silesia region in south west Poland, on the banks of the river Oder. As a city on the crossroads of the important historic Via Regia and Amber Road trading routes, it was under the sphere of influence of many Central European powers throughout history, including the Kingdom of Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, Prussia and the Austrian Empire. In the twentieth century it was a German city, called Breslau, till the end of World War II, when its German population was almost completely replaced by Poles transferred from the East. The city's architecture reflects this mixed heritage with old buildings influenced by many different architectural styles. The most notable buildings include the Main Market Square (Rynek Glowny), which dates from the 13th century, and St. Elizabeth Church with a 75m observational deck from which the panorama of the city can be enjoyed. Wroclaw has been selected as a 2016 European Capital of Culture.

Which is the main airport in Wroclaw?

Flights to Wroclaw will touch down at the city's Copernicus Airport. Named after the famous astronomer who called Wroclaw home, the airport is only six miles southwest of the city centre. Known under the Austro-Hungarian Empire as Breslau, Wroclaw is a Polish city with a long, glorious and fascinating history. Nowadays, it's a modern destination, with an exceptional bus and tram network. And it's a city that's full of appealing attractions. On the history side of things, visitors can take in the massive Panoramic Painting of the Battle of Radawice, while Market Square hosts various medieval buildings (and Europe's oldest eatery). The Old Town, Ostrów Tumski, is even older, dating back to the 10th century, and contains must-sees like the gothic cathedral. At the end of the day, visitors can head to Szczytnicki Park to see the nightly Multimedia Fountain: an incredible light and sound performance.
