Almeria

Almeria, located on the south-west coast of Spain, shares its name with the province it governs. Originally built as a defensive settlement, the name translates as 'the Watchtower' - the fortress here is the second largest in Andalusia. The fortress, known as the Alcazaba, is a must-visit attraction with large gardens and triple line of defence walls. For history buffs, Almeria's air raid shelters serve as Europe's longest underground galleries. Almeria Museum houses a range of exhibitions displaying Prehistoric, Roman and Greek artifacts. The port of Almeria offers tourist cruises in the Mediterranean Sea and connections to Algeria, Melilla and Morocco.
