Flying in Europe is changing: here’s what travellers need to know.

The day before departure can feel unexpectedly stressful. Getting to the airport, navigating security, unclear rules around liquids or electronics. Should your laptop come out, or stay in your bag? Crowded terminals, announcements and long queues often shape the travel experience long before boarding begins.

Across Europe, many airports are currently rethinking how these moments work. New security technology, changing screening rules and improved access to airports are gradually making travel easier — though not everywhere, and not all at once. This study looks at European airports where these changes are already visible, showing what smoother airport processes can look like today and how travellers can plan more confidently for their next journey.

What’s Changing at Airports Right Now?

At many airports, security screening is beginning to feel noticeably different. New scanner technology allows liquids and electronics to stay inside hand luggage: no unpacking required. However, this isn’t universal yet: while some airports have already introduced these new procedures, others still apply the familiar 100 ml liquids rule.

For travellers, this means one thing: security checks can work very differently depending on the airport. Knowing what to expect — and planning ahead — can make the process far smoother and less stressful.

Small adjustments in how you get to the airport can make a big difference. Omio highlights what travellers should keep in mind before their next flight:

Rail beats road travel in big cities. In cities like London, Paris or Berlin, rush hour can last most of the day. Local trains and metro services are often faster, more predictable and cheaper than traveling by rental car or taxi.

Terminal 1 or Terminal 2? Check ahead! Knowing your departure terminal in advance can save long walks and last-minute stress — especially at large airports like in London, Istanbul, Rome or Madrid.
Express trains and airport shuttles are the most reliable option. With fixed schedules and frequent departures, dedicated airport services are usually the most predictable way to reach the terminal on time. Examples include the City Airport Train (CAT) in Vienna, the Flytoget Airport Express in Oslo and the Airport Express FEX to Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

At many airports, new security scanners are already changing how screening works. In some cases, liquids larger than 100 ml – such as reusable water bottles or standard-size sunscreen and shampoo – can remain in hand luggage, along with electronics. This technology hasn’t been rolled out everywhere yet, but at some airports the new procedures are already in place.

At the time of the study, 18 out of 50 airports analysed had introduced more relaxed liquid rules. These include popular gateway airports like London Heathrow, Edinburgh Airport, Belfast International Airport (BFS), Frankfurt Airport and Milan Malpensa Airport and – where security screening often already feels noticeably more relaxed.
At other airports, the standard 100 ml rule still applies. This includes Manchester Airport (MAN), Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), Venice Airport as well as many popular vacation destinations like Palermo Airport in Sicily, Nice Côte d’Azur Airport and Ibiza Airport.
As new scanner technology is introduced gradually, procedures can even differ by terminal. It’s worth checking the rules before you travel. The most reliable source is always the official website of the airport you’re flying through.

Travellers looking to avoid long security lines can book a Fast Track time slot in advance at many airports. This can make a noticeable difference especially during peak hours or when connections are tight. Some airports offer Fast Track access free of charge, while others charge a fee. In most cases, access needs to be booked online in advance.

More than two thirds of the airports analysed offer bookable Fast Track slots. At some locations the service is even available at no extra cost, for example in airports in Germany and in Amsterdam.
However, in most cases Fast Track comes with a fee. Prices typically range from £4 to £36, depending on the airport, with Zurich Airport currently among the most expensive options.
In the UK, Fast Track security services start at £5 at Belfast International Airport and rise to £17 at Manchester Airport. At Edinburgh Airport, the service is available from £7, while Heathrow Airport charges around £13.
Some airlines also include Fast Track access for Priority or Business Class passengers, so it’s worth checking the conditions of your ticket before booking separately.

Staying at the airport lounge makes waiting more comfortable, and they can be especially worthwhile during long delays, early departures or extended layovers. What many travellers don’t realise is that lounges are no longer reserved for frequent flyers or Business and First Class passengers only. At many airports, regular travellers can also purchase day passes for a fee.

In situations like long waits between flights or major delays, lounge access can make a noticeable difference. In addition to quieter seating areas, lounges usually offer Wi-Fi, hot and cold beverages, snacks and workspaces. That’s a clear advantage when departures are delayed or connections take longer than expected.

One-time lounge access can often be booked online in advance or directly at the airport, although availability depends on the location and how busy the lounge is at the time.
Lounge access starts at around £16 at airports such as Singapore Changi Airport or Tokyo Narita Airport. In Europe, Rome Fiumicino Airport is among the more affordable options, with entry starting at £21.

Flight cancellations are relatively uncommon, but they can derail an entire travel plan. With tight connections or short trips, a single cancelled flight can quickly turn a relaxed journey into a stressful one. A closer look at cancellation rates shows that not all airports are affected equally.

In Keflavík International Airport in Iceland, cancellations occur more frequently than elsewhere. Geography and weather play a major role: snow, ice, strong winds and occasional volcanic activity can disrupt flight schedules. Around two out of every 100 flights are cancelled – still a low number overall, but higher compared to others.
UK airports are among the European airports with higher cancellation rates. At Manchester Airport, around 1.80% of all flights are cancelled, compared with 1.65% at Edinburgh Airport and 1.45% at Belfast International Airport.
By contrast, cancellations are particularly rare at airports serving popular holiday destinations. At airports such as Athens International Airport (ATH), Istanbul Airport, Ibiza Airport and Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD), cancellation rates remain below one percent of annual flights.

For passengers with lots of luggage, traveling with children or after a long flight, taking a taxi is often the most comfortable way to get from the airport into the city. However, transfer costs can vary significantly. They depend not only on distance, but also on traffic conditions, time of day, local fare structures and possible surcharges.

The most affordable taxi rides can be found in Bulgaria’s capital of Sofia, where a trip from the airport to the city center costs around £9, a fare that remains reasonable even for solo travellers.
Taxi fares also stay surprisingly low in many other cities, where airport transfers cost £19 or less, including Lisbon and Ibiza. On average, travellers can expect to pay around £36 for a taxi ride from the airport into the city.
Costs rise sharply in larger metropolitan areas such as Milan or Munich, where fares can reach up to £85 per trip. More affordable alternatives include airport rail links like the Malpensa Express in Milan or the S-Bahn from Munich Airport, both costing around £13.

Build in extra time! At large international hubs, immigration, security checks and terminal transfers often take longer than expected. Even when connecting, adding an extra 30–60 minutes can make a real difference.
Multiple security checks are normal! At airports like Dubai International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport or John F. Kennedy International Airport, security screening may happen both before departure and again at the gate. It’s standard practice, but it takes time.
Terminal distances can be long! Many major airports function like small cities. Walking times of 15–30 minutes or additional shuttle trains between terminals are common, for example at Singapore Changi Airport or Tokyo Narita Airport, where transfers often take longer than travellers expect.
Immigration takes time! When entering foreign countries, delays are often caused by passport and visa checks rather than security screening. In the United States in particular, immigration queues are currently often longer, so extra patience is essential.
Night and early-morning flights are common! Many global hubs operate 24/7 and handle high traffic volumes. At airports such as Hong Kong International Airport or São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport, departures and arrivals throughout the night are routine.
Information is mostly digital! Apps, flight monitors and announcements are often the primary sources of information. While signage and staff can help, they don’t always replace good preparation in advance.

Most Common Airport Questions

A taxi is usually the better choice when comfort and flexibility matter more than price. Especially if you’re traveling with a lot of luggage, arriving late at night or when there’s no direct rail connection. For groups, taxis can also make sense as the cost can be shared.

Local transport and express services, on the other hand, are often cheaper and more predictable. Particularly in large cities with good airport links and during peak hours, when road traffic becomes less reliable.
For shorter delays, quieter seating areas, cafés and airport restaurants are usually sufficient. If the wait stretches longer, airport lounges are often the most comfortable option. With Wi-Fi, snacks, drinks and a calmer atmosphere, they make delays much easier to manage.

Access can usually be purchased via a day pass, even at short notice.
If your connecting flights are booked as part of the same ticket, the airline will usually rebook you on the next available flight. Depending on the waiting time, meals or even hotel accommodation may be provided. It’s best to head to the airline’s service desk or check the airline app right away.

If flights are booked separately, they are treated as independent journeys. In that case, the airline operating the second flight is generally not obliged to rebook you free of charge if you miss the connection. Travellers often need to purchase a new ticket. To reduce this risk, it’s wise to allow generous transfer times or, when possible, book connecting flights as a single reservation.
If a flight is cancelled, the first step is to contact your airline – either at the service desk or the check-in counter. In many cases, passengers are automatically rebooked or offered an alternative.

The most important thing is to stay calm, gather information and check which options are available. Depending on the situation, this can be done directly at the airport, via the airline app or through the airline’s customer service line.

This study examines the passenger-friendliness of selected European airports in the context of current operational changes, particularly in areas such as security screening and other processes that have traditionally been perceived as cumbersome or stressful by travellers.

A total of 50 international airports across Europe were analysed using passenger-focused criteria designed to reflect the entire airport journey: from city access and security screening to the quality of time spent inside the terminal, including food, retail and service offerings. The aim was not to assess luxury or brand perception, but rather the practical, everyday usability of airports from a traveler’s point of view.

Data collection was based on reliable primary sources, supplemented by standardised transport and routing data. Only factors that are accessible to all passengers were considered. Airline-specific privileges or exclusive services were excluded to ensure fair and comparable results.

The findings highlight where European airports have already simplified processes, where differences remain, and which factors currently have the greatest impact on creating a less stressful airport experience.

Factors That Form The Ranking

New Liquid Rules at Security Screening

This factor assesses whether airports have introduced new security procedures that allow a departure from the traditional 100 ml liquids rule for carry-on luggage. At airports equipped with modern scanner technology, passengers may be allowed to keep larger quantities of liquids in their bags, simplifying procedures and reducing stress at security checkpoints. More liberal liquids rules had a positive impact on an airport’s ranking. This research is based on official information provided by airport operators regarding security and carry-on regulations.

Electronics in Hand Luggage

This factor evaluates whether electronic devices such as laptops, tablets or cameras must be removed from hand luggage during security screening. Where modern scanner technology allows electronics to remain in bags, the process becomes significantly smoother and faster. Airports where this rule is already in place received higher scores. The evaluation is based on official information from airport operators on current security procedures.

Fast Track at Security

This factor analysed whether passengers can access Fast Track security via pre-bookable time slots, regardless of airline or booking class. The ability to reserve a fixed slot reduces uncertainty and waiting times, particularly during peak periods or tight connections. Airports offering publicly accessible Fast Track options scored more positively, with free services or lower fees further improving results. Only Fast Track services available to all passengers were considered. Sources include official airport information and service providers linked directly from airport websites.

Access to Airport Lounges

This factor measures whether passengers can access airport lounges regardless of airline or travel class, for example via a day pass. Lounge access can significantly improve comfort during long waits, layovers or delays and contributes to a less stressful airport stay. Airports offering bookable lounges service, particularly at lower entry prices, were rated higher. Exclusive airline or credit-card lounges were excluded. The research is based on official airport information and linked lounge providers.

Public Transport to City Center: Travel Time

This factor considers the average travel time by public transport between the airport and the city center. Short and predictable transfer times reduce pre-departure stress and increase usable time at the destination, especially on short trips. Airports with faster connections to the city center received higher scores. Calculations are based on standardised public transport route queries using Google Maps.

Public Transport to City Center: Service Frequency

In addition to travel time, the frequency of public transport connections between the airport and city center was analysed. High-frequency services increase flexibility, reduce waiting times and make transfers more resilient to delays. Airports with frequent rail, metro or bus services performed better in this category. The evaluation is based on standardised public transport schedule data.

Taxi Fare

This factor shows the average cost of a taxi ride from the airport to the city center. For travellers with luggage, families or early departures, taxis remain an important and convenient option. Lower taxi fares reduce financial barriers and increase flexibility. Airports with more affordable taxi fares scored higher. The assessment is based on average standard-fare prices from the Airmundo Airport Taxi Report 2024.

Flight Cancellation Rate

The cancellation rate measures how often flights are cancelled at a given airport. Cancellations can significantly disrupt travel plans, particularly for short stays or tight connections. Airports with lower cancellation rates offer greater planning reliability and were therefore rated more positively. The research is based on average cancellation rates, regardless of specific causes such as weather or strikes.

Annual Passenger Volume

This factor serves as an indicator of congestion and potential crowding. Very high passenger volumes can result in longer walking distances, crowded terminals and increased waiting times. Airports with moderate passenger volumes were rated more positively, as they tend to be easier to navigate and less stressful. The evaluation is based on officially published annual passenger statistics.

Retail Offerings

This factor analyses the range of shopping options available in the terminals as part of overall passenger comfort. To ensure fair comparison between airports of different sizes, the number of shops was set in relation to annual passenger volume. A higher number of shops per million passengers indicates greater choice and scored more positively. The assessment is based on official information provided by airport operators.

Quality of Food and Beverage Options

The quality of restaurants, cafés and food outlets was analysed using visitor ratings. Rather than measuring quantity, this factor focuses on perceived quality. Ratings were grouped into qualitative categories and incorporated into the overall evaluation. The analysis is based on aggregated user reviews from publicly accessible review platforms.

Parking Costs: 24 Hours

This factor considers the cost of parking a private vehicle at the airport for a 24-hour period. Only airport-operated parking facilities were included; external providers and park-and-ride options were excluded. Lower parking fees were rated more positively, as parking remains a relevant access option for many travellers. The lowest available on-site rate was used for scoring.

Scoring and Ranking

To enable comparison across all airports, results for each factor were standardised on a 0–100 point scale. The airport performing best or offering the lowest cost in a given factor received a score of 100, while the weakest or most expensive result received a score of 0. All other airports were scored proportionally between these values.

The overall ranking was calculated by aggregating all standardised factor scores and normalising the total result on a 0–100 scale. A commonly used normalisation method was applied.
