Lighthouses are among the oldest means of communication and although their origins are unclear, they\u2019ve inspired poets, writers, painters and filmmakers and stand witness to history, war and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lighthouse of Alexandria, on a small island off the coast of Egypt, is considered the oldest lighthouse in the world. The monument, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, was built between 299 and 279BC and was the tallest lighthouse for many aeons. Unfortunately, several earthquakes affected the stability of the structure and destroyed it completely in 1323. Despite its fate, the lighthouse of Alexandria inspired other architects, mainly in the Mediterranean who erected replicas. Today, lighthouses are everywhere, from the Atlantic Coast to the Indian Ocean to the Tasman Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though most ships today navigate via GPS, lighthouses are still strategically necessary even if some have become tourist sites rather than beacons luring sailors home to their sweethearts. Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hilmar Sigvaldason, the cheerful, engaging lighthouse keeper at Akranesviti, about an hour north of the capital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/flights\/reykjavik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reykjavik<\/a>, loves his two lighthouses\u2014yes, there are two of them. Nearby, you can watch eider ducks breed, and in good weather you might be able to spot the Reykjanes Peninsula to the south, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula to the west, and the snow-capped mountains to the east. The Cyclades are the most well-known island group, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/issue\/sustainability-en-gb\/the-ferry-best-route-a-guide-to-the-saronic-gulf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mykonos<\/a> and Santorini. But it&#8217;s Andros, which you can get to via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/ferries\/athens\/andros-vylho\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ferry from Athens<\/a>, that inspired artists and architects. A small set of stone steps cut into the rock, forming a staircase to the light, which was destroyed during WWII but rebuilt by a local couple in 1994 in memory of their deceased daughter. For the best views, head to the small fortress in the harbor for a IG-worthy snapshot.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lighthouse in Lindau, Germany<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-7 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"36566\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/shutterstock_1778800964-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36566\"\/><figcaption>The Lindau lighthouse and the Bavarian Lion are best explored on a boat trip across Lake Constance in Germany. At 428 metres above sea level, it\u2019s the highest beacon in Germany, and boasts a charming, integrated clock.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Lindau      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Lindau   <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Completed in 1856, the Lindau Light replaced the 12th century Mang tower, which is why it\u2019s also known as a new lighthouse. Initially operated by oil, fire and kerosene, it was converted to electric light in 1936.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the surrounding viewing platform, which you reach after climbing 139 steps, you have an excellent panoramic view over Lake Constance and the imposing Bavarian Lion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Portland Head Light in Maine, USA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-9 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"36580\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/shutterstock_1692696580-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36580\"\/><figcaption>A view of Portland Head Light on the rocky coast of Maine makes it clear why lighthouses have inspired so many artists and poets. According to lore, George Washington asked for the 24-metre lighthouse to be built from locally sourced materials such as quarry stone. The United States Department of the Treasury operated the lighthouse for nearly 100 years but today, it\u2019s run by the United States Coast Guard and the town of Cape Elizabeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Portland Head Light was converted to automatic operation in 1989 and has managed without a keeper since then. The former residential buildings now house a museum that provides insights into the tower\u2019s history.
