For more exercise, take a short hike up Arthur\u2019s Seat, located in Holyrood Park, to catch perhaps the best view in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 2: Edinburgh to Glasgow<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the morning, take an hour-long ScotRail or Avanti West Coast train over to Scotland\u2019s second city, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/trains\/glasgow\">Glasgow<\/a>. Spend your day exploring all the things to see and do in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/window-seat\/city-guides\/glasgow\/\">Glasgow<\/a>. Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 3: Glasgow to Fort William<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s all about the journey, as you head from the Lowlands to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/trains\/glasgow\/fort-william?gclid=CjwKCAjwuYWSBhByEiwAKd_n_giwvIy13fE9_JHdLnrDS92vo4I4n4y9m6MCo7kNVs3tPTqyL-2sdhoCddIQAvD_BwE\">Highlands<\/a> on what some call the most scenic train journey in the world: the West Highland Line. The nearly four-hour ScotRail train passes by stupendous scenery as it travels north along Scotland\u2019s west coast. You\u2019ll first head through Loch Lomond, Great Britain\u2019s largest lake, containing more than 30 islands and surrounded by hills. Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue on the train to Crianlarich, where the line splits into two sections\u2014one to Oban and one to Fort William. Stay on the Fort William line to pass through Corrour, the highest railway station in the U.K., before traveling into Rannoch Moor, an otherworldly land of bogs and rivers that\u2019s one of Europe\u2019s last existing wilderness areas. You\u2019ll cross this moorland by train for 23 miles before heading west to the banks of Loch Leven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There you\u2019ll veer north to Fort William, home to some of the loveliest scenery of the trip: the peak of Ben Nevis, the U.K.\u2019s highest mountain (called a \u201cMunro\u201d in Scotland, for any mountain more than 3,000 ft tall). The Ben Nevis Distillery, to the north of Fort William, makes a fine stop for a tipple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 4: Fort William to Mallaig<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in Scotland between April and October, you\u2019ll be lucky enough to experience the romantic steam-powered Jacobite Steam Train, better known as the Harry Potter Train, since Hogwarts Express traveled parts of this route in the <em>Harry Potter<\/em> movies. (ScotRail\u2019s West Highland Line train also plies the same route). The Jacobite Steam Train follows the Road to the Isles, with stupendous views of mountains, lochs and beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-6 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"38282\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/shutterstock_388785562-1-1-1024x632.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38282\"\/><figcaption>You may have seen the Jacobite Steam Train in the <em>Harry Potter<\/em> films. Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Your train first crosses Glenfinnan Viaduct, with its 21 arches, offering wonderful outlooks on Loch Shiel and the mossy green hills. From there, continue west to Arisaig, a coastal village with charming white sand beaches known as the Silver Sands of Morar set alongside Loch Morar, the deepest freshwater lake in the British Isles. Be sure to gaze upon the islands in the distance with evocative names\u2014Eigg, Muck and R\u00f9m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-7 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"38288\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/shutterstock_50622070-1-1024x632.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38288\"\/><figcaption>The Silver Sands of Morar sit along Loch Morar, a freshwater lake. After disembarking in this bustling fishing port, treat yourself to a tasty fish and chips dinner.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 5: Mallaig to Armadale (Isle of Skye)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catch the 45-minute ferry from Mallaig to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/travel\/isle-of-skye\">Armadale<\/a> on the Isle of Skye, a picturesque island known for its castles, waterfalls and dramatic coastline. Once you arrive, take a bus to Portree, the island\u2019s largest town. Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 6: Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness\/Inverness to Thurso and Wick&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hop on the Kyle Line, a ScotRail train that travels about two hours and 40 minutes east to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/trains\/inverness\">Inverness<\/a>. Soon after you start your journey, you\u2019ll get a glimpse of the dramatic Torridon Peaks. All along the route, you\u2019ll spy lovely lochs and moors. Once you reach Inverness, wander its old town, stopping in 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century Inverness Cathedral and Inverness Castle.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Scotland      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Scotland  <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re feeling adventurous, catch The Far North Line to the very northern tip of Scotland\u2014from Inverness to the towns of Thurso and Wick. The ScotRail train covers 160 miles over about four hours to Thurso and four-and-a-half hours to Wick; you\u2019ll meander past vast stretches of remote land and rivers along the way.
