Due to colonisation, war and migration, languages that could trace their roots to a proto-Eurasian tongue spoken more than 15,000 years ago evolved, expanded and overtook other tongues. For every English or Farsi speaker, there is one less Hawaiian or Esuma speaker in the world. While most Indo-European languages\u2014of which there are 445\u2014thrive today, some languages are facing extinction.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNESCO has established five statuses for languages on the brink of extinction: \u201cvulnerable,\u201d \u201cdefinitely endangered,\u201d \u201cseverely endangered,\u201d \u201ccritically endangered\u201d and \u201cextinct.\u201d According to UNESCO, there are now 2,418 languages with one of the first four statuses, and 228 that are already extinct.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While covering all of them would be ideal, we\u2019ll only focus on six in the Indo-European family that are in some level of danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Definitely endangered European languages<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><em>The term &#8220;definitely endangered&#8221; is used for languages that children no longer learn as their mother tongue at home.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scottish Gaelic<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Scottish Gaelic is spoken by the people of the Highlands and despite its glorious origins, experienced much turmoil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/EditorialOnly_Quilts_shutterstock_204003907-683x1024.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"25429\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/EditorialOnly_Quilts_shutterstock_204003907.png\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/?attachment_id=25429\" class=\"wp-image-25429\"\/><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-item__caption\">Once forbidden, kilts and bagpipes are common cultural symbols of the Scots. In came King James I who, fearing a thirst for independence, squashed the clans and forced them to adopt English as their mother tongue. Further repressions by the English kings lead to the Highland Clearances in the 18th century and the infamous Jacobite revolution, which culminated in the brutal slaughter of thousands of Scots at the Battle of Culloden in the late 18th century. Scots were banned from wearing kilts, playing the bagpipes and teaching Gaelic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Scotland      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Scotland   <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Yet despite these edicts, Scottish Gaelic lived on, although it\u2019s only spoken by about&nbsp; 50,000 people in Scotland today. With a fierce pride in Scottish arts and customs, thanks to Scottish descents and steadfast locals, Scottish customs have returned, including Scottish Gaelic, which was recognised as one of the country\u2019s national languages in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>M\u00f2cheno<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u00f2cheno is an Austro-Bavarian Germanic language spoken in the province of Trento, in the northeast of Italy. Originally from southern Germany, the M\u00f2cheno people migrated to the Fersina Valley for mining work during the Middle Ages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the foot of the Fiemme Alps lie the municipalities of Fierozzo, Frassilongo and Pal\u00f9 del Fersina where M\u00f2cheno is still spoken, albeit by only 2,270 people. Credit: Darwin Vegher\/Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite a desire to stick to old ways, M\u00f2cheno couldn\u2019t combat mixed marriages and the Italianisation of their culture, especially after the fall of the Reich, when families, who had migrated to Germany to get citizenship and land, were forced to return to Trentino as traitors. These M\u00f2chene stopped teaching their children the language to avoid prejudice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vitality of the M\u00f2cheno language has been revived thanks to the development of tourism and the creation of the M\u00f2cheno-Cimbrian Cultural Institute to preserve and promote the language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Severely endangered European languages<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><em>The status \u201cseverely endangered\u201d refers to languages that are spoken by grandparents, and that parents can understand but do not speak with each other or with their children.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Norman<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Spoken in Normandy, Norman is an O\u00efl language, which stems from Old French used in the Middle Ages. Originally derived from Latin, Norman is a mixture of Viking and Anglo-Saxon words, because of Scandinavian influences and the Norman conquest of England by William of Orange. William established Norman as the official language of England. This lasted until the 14th century when Middle English took over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The influence of English changed the language into an Anglo-Norman hybrid and the French revolution further diminished its influence as French became the language of choice. Fauve Othon\/Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, the Conseil Scientifique et Culturel des Parlers Normands (Scientific and Cultural Council for Norman Languages) was created in 2019 to preserve and promote Norman. Some of the new initiatives include a university diploma in Norman studies, the opening of \u201cNorman cafes,\u201d and a library dedicated to the language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Kashubian<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Kashubian is a Slavic language from Poland that is mainly spoken in Pomerania in the northeast. While 100,000 people know the language, only 53,000 of them use it regularly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years and through both world wars, the Kashubians had to battle indoctrination by the Kulturkampf and the Polish government. The Communists stifled any learning or teaching of the language, which led to three generations of Kashubians having varying abilities to read, speak or write it. Eventually, most Kashubians only spoke Polish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Poland      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Poland  <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Today, Kashubian is taught in schools as a second language to ensure its preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Szczecin_shutterstock_1776357962.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25406\"\/><figcaption>Szczecin, Poland, is one of the most popular destinations in Pomerania. Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Critically endangered European languages<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><em>The term \u201ccritically endangered\u201d is used for languages whose youngest speakers are the elderly, who speak it infrequently.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tsakonian<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Dating back to ancient Sparta, Tsakonian is one of the oldest Hellenic languages in Greece and is spoken by about 2,000 people in Tsakonia, a group of villages in the east of the Peloponnese. The language declined because of migration, especially in the northern mountain villages of Kastanitsa and Sitna where many locals only return in summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The year-round population is elderly. Couple that with the perception that it\u2019s for the peasants, and you understand its decline. Tsakionian has mostly been a spoken language rather than a written one due to its phonetics being difficult to transcribe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Greece      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Greece  <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, the future doesn\u2019t look bright for Tsakonian as there is a lack of teachers and a written version of the language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Kastanitsa_shutterstock_745691614.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25424\"\/><figcaption>Kastanitsa, Greece, is located on the dramatic slopes of Mount Parnon and is home to the Tsakonians. Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cornish<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As the name suggests, Cornish is from Cornwall in the southwest of England. A Celtic language that became extinct in the 18th century, Cornish came back in the 20th century thanks to a growing interest in Celtic culture. It is now recognised as an official minority language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of the Cornish people is marked by rebellions to protect their independence. Their customs, language and community differ greatly from the rest of England, resulting in a distinct identity.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Cornwall      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Cornwall  <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>But despite these efforts, massive colonisation pushed the Celts to migrate further west.
