A day spa is a nice treat when you\u2019re working long hours but to truly rejuvenate, head to these five historic towns, members of UNESCO\u2019s Great Spas of Europe, to detox from the stresses of the modern world. While there are 15 on the official UNESCO list, we narrowed it down to our faves in five different countries for the ultimate spa holidays in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Baden-Baden, Germany<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Situated in the Black Forest above the river Oos, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/trains\/baden-baden?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=February&amp;utm_content=UNESCO-Spas&amp;utm_term=US_trains_BadenBaden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baden-Baden<\/a> has long been synonymous with spas. The Romans settled the town in 80 A.D., bringing with them their thermal traditions. But it wasn\u2019t until the 19th century that well-heeled Europeans headed here to take in the medicinal waters. Head to the Caracalla spa to bathe in indoor and outdoor pools from the&nbsp; Friedrichsstolle spring or treat yourself to a massage or other service. Situated on the border of Slovakia in the Carpathian mountains, Luha\u010dovice has only 6,000 residents, ensuring true relaxation. Local son Jurkovic was instrumental in giving the resort town its fairytale-like quality with his work at Slune\u010dn\u00ed l\u00e1zn\u011b (Sunshine Spa) and Vodol\u00e9\u010debn\u00e9ho \u00fastavu (Hydrotherapeutic Facility). Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where to stay: Hotel Radun<\/strong><br>This family-run boutique hotel, situated outside the centre of town, has 15 rooms overlooking the Aloiska spring and offers guest wellness treatments at its own spa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Montecatini Terme, Italy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Italians were some of the first people to recognise the healing powers of springs so it\u2019s no wonder the Tuscan town of Montecatini Terme is one of the most popular historic spa towns in Europe. The Romans built baths here but it was Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Lorena who consolidated the springs in the eighteenth century, building the Bagno Regio (Imperial Bath) and Terme Leopoldine (Leopoldo\u2019s Baths), among other structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/8_Montecatini_Terme_eyeem-100033628-130431706-2-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17555\"\/><figcaption>Montecatini Terme sits in the Tuscan countryside. That may change this year as wellness becomes more of a priority.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Spa      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Spa  <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The town\u2019s therapeutic roots are\u2014you guessed it\u2014Roman, with the philosopher Pliny the Elder raving about its curative waters in the first century B.C. European nobility (thanks to Peter the Great) came flooding into the Art Nouveau town in the eighteenth century but its popularity as a resort waned in favour of Baden Baden and Vichy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the funicular to Les Thermes Spa, a modern complex with indoor and outdoor pools as well as saunas and steam rooms. Soak in iron-rich waters in a copper bathtub as you admire the verdant and lush Wallonian forest out of your bay window.
