A well-written travel book, be it fiction or guidebook, can transport you from the comfort of your own home or daily commute to another place. To kick-start your wanderlust, we\u2019ve asked six experts in the online and publishing worlds to offer recommendations on their favourite books about travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Sabina Urraca is the author of \u201cLas ni\u00f1as prodigio\u201d and has written for<\/em> El Pa\u00eds<em>, <\/em>Vice<em> and other Spanish publications.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default columns-2 wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which book would you take to a desert island?<\/strong><br>Lydia Davis\u2019 \u201cThe Collected Stories of Lydia Davis\u201d and \u201cEssays,&#8221; they complete each other, feed each other and establish a relationship [between each other]. I could spend months alternating between the two, comparing the tales to the essays, creating bridges between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which travel writers from your own country (or language) would you recommend?<\/strong><br>Sergio C. Fanjul is the writer of my generation, who has best portrayed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/travel\/madrid?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=September&amp;utm_content=BookVoyage&amp;utm_term=US_travel_Madrid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Madrid<\/a> that many of us know. In his book \u201cLa ciudad infinita,\u201d [he describes] a crazy place, a mixture between a crazy present and an overwhelming, dystopian past\u2026But, to me, it is the most beautiful portrait of my city I have ever read. My parents had loads of them. I would spend our trips fascinated with the descriptions of the places, such as: \u201cThe traveler, tired after a whole day&#8217;s walking, cannot miss this small tavern in the heart of Lisbon&#8230;With luck, the owner, old Ad\u00edlia, will be in a good mood on that day.\u201d I don\u2019t know what they\u2019re like now but there was a time these travel guides were like stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Florian Pontais is a French bookstagrammer who illustrates his two passions: books and food.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default columns-2 wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What book inspired you to visit a destination?<\/strong><br>When I read \u201cPereira Maintains\u201d by Antonio Tabucchi and \u201cThe Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis\u201d by Jos\u00e9 Saramago I knew I wanted to go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/travel\/lisbon?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=September&amp;utm_content=Book-Voyage&amp;utm_term=US_travel_lisbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lisbon<\/a>. They both give a very different image of the city and this intrigued me.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Lisbon      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Lisbon   <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Which new travel books are you most looking forward to reading?<\/strong><br>\u201cLiterary Places\u201d by Sarah Baxter. I love to read local writers when I travel. Baxter connects famous writers to the places where they set their books, from Elena Ferrante&#8217;s Naples to Victor Hugo&#8217;s Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/window-seat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/6_Naples_nicolas-pierson-8EpBCI74JRw-unsplash-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12633\"\/><figcaption>Let your mind drift to the idyllic gulf of Naples. But I also have a thing for older travel writers, from Stendhal to Flaubert, Pierre Loti and Isabelle Massieu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Chiara Sgarbi is an Italian bookstagrammer with more than 12,000 passionate followers<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default columns-2 wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What book inspired you to visit a destination?<\/strong><br>\u201cThe Songlines\u201d by Bruce Chatwin. It is about the roots, traditions and culture of the first inhabitants of Australia. The concept is very interesting and hard to get from a Western perspective\u2026this book helped me travel in a more curious way. I was grateful to read these topics and to go there as well, getting a full experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What travel guide book can you not live without?<\/strong><br>Lonely Planet is the one I use the most. It is full of useful details to organize long or short trips. I would love to read this book as it is a collection of adventures from travelers and explorers with amazing illustrations and hard-to-find maps. I am fascinated by times when travel was hard but people were eager to discover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Anna Diekmann is an Editorial Manager at <\/em>Gestalten<em>, a publishing house in Germany.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default columns-2 wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which book would you take to a desert island?<\/strong><br>My favorite book is \u201cLa sombra del viento\u201d by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I&#8217;ve read it at least four times and could read it over and over again. The book makes you want to explore the mysterious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/travel\/barcelona?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=September&amp;utm_content=Book-Voyage&amp;utm_term=US_travel_barcelona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barcelona<\/a> of the mid-20th Century, which is described so vividly.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"search-widget-overlay\" class=\"search-widget-overlay\">\r\n  <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__form\" data-search-widget-container>\r\n    <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__details\">\r\n      <button class=\"search-widget-overlay__close\" data-search-widget-close>\r\n        \u2715\r\n      <\/button>\r\n      <div class=\"search-widget-overlay__text\">\r\n        Barcelona      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"search-widget-cta\">\r\n  <button class=\"search-widget-cta__button\" data-search-widget-cta>\r\n    Tickets to Barcelona   <\/button>\r\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Which new travel books are you most looking forward to reading<\/strong>?<br>Simone Harre&#8217;s \u201cChina, wer bist du?\u201d about the Chinese society she got to know during her five-year-long travels. I can&#8217;t wait to read the book as Stephan Orth&#8217;s \u201cCouchsurfing in China,\u201d made me interested in a country I do not know much about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which travel writers from your own country (or language) would you recommend?<\/strong><br>I am a huge fan of the journalist Phillip Laage who recently published a critical and philosophical book, \u201cVom Gl\u00fcck zu reisen,\u201d<strong> <\/strong>about traveling in today&#8217;s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Angela Sangma Francis is the author of the award-winning book \u201cEverest\u201d published by Flying Eye Books.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default columns-2 wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What book inspired you to visit a destination?<\/strong><br>\u201cInvisible Cities\u201d by Italo Calvino. This is a bit of a cheat, as the [cities] aren\u2019t real. The 55 cities constructed by Calvino resemble a place we might know&#8230;Esmeralda could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.com\/travel\/venice?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=September&amp;utm_content=Book-Voyage&amp;utm_term=US_travel_venice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Venice<\/a> with its network of canals, for example. \u201cInvisible Cities\u201d does what the best books should; it pushes you to discover the world, its cities and inhabitants from a different position&#8230;to use your imagination to go as far as you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which book would you take to a desert island?<\/strong><br>The dictionary. It\u2019s a book, a fountain of knowledge and a game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What travel guide book can you not live without?<\/strong><br>There\u2019s a collection of guide books for children called \u201cThis Is\u2026\u201d written by Czech artist, Miroslav Sasek. Starting with three in the series, he went on to publish 18 more. Graphically stunning they can be read over and over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tom Beer is the editor-in-chief of <\/em>Kirkus Reviews<em>, the venerable book-review magazine, based in New York City.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default columns-2 wp-block-gallery-6 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What book inspired you to visit a destination?<\/strong><br>I\u2019m not sure there\u2019s a direct correlation, but a lavishly illustrated edition of Nancy Mitford\u2019s \u201cMadame de Pompadour\u201d (now sadly out of print, though you can get the text from <em>New York Review Books<\/em>) sparked a youthful case of Francophilia and interest in French history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which new travel books are you most looking forward to reading?<\/strong><br>I can\u2019t wait to read \u201cThe Adventurer\u2019s Son\u201d by Roman Dial, an Alaskan ecologist and wilderness expert. Dial\u2019s 27-year-old son Cody disappeared in the jungles of Costa Rica in 2014, and Dial traveled to that lush Central American country to try and find out what happened. The book sounds like an irresistible and moving blend of mystery, travelogue and grief memoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which travel writers from your own country (or language) would you recommend?<\/strong><br>Anything by Bill Bryson\u2014born in the United States, and a longtime resident of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omio.co.uk\/trains?utm_source=omio-magazine&amp;utm_medium=magazine&amp;utm_campaign=September&amp;utm_content=BookVoyage&amp;utm_term=US_Trains_UnitedKingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Kingdom<\/a>\u2014is worth reading, especially \u201cNotes From a Small Island\u201d and \u201cA Walk in the Woods.\u201d Probably my favorite travel writer in the English language\u2014though she considers herself a writer, period\u2014is Jan Morris.
